Lambretta is one of the iconic two-wheeler manufacturers that enjoyed its heydays in India in the 1970s and ’80s but faded into oblivion as time passed on. However, the Italian brand had announced 12 months ago that it was making a return to the Indian market by partnering up with Lohia Auto. While the company had announced its intentions of introducing an electric scooter to begin its next innings, we were not sure what form it would take.
Until now, as Lambretta has just unveiled the G325 scooter at EICMA 2019, and promised us that it will arrive in India in electric form soon.
The G325 scooter shown at EICMA is a petrol-powered scooter that has a metal monocoque chassis with interchangeable side panels. Lambretta’s use of a monocoque frame is not new for the Indian buyer: Vespa scooters already make use of such a frame for its range of exotic scooters.
And while the two Italian icons will end up locking horns in India, the two scooters look nothing like each other. Vespas looks more compact and curvaceous while the new Lambretta G325 is long and has a sharp, protruding beak. Even the side panels are large, with a sportback feel to them. Look closely and you can even spot the slim and minimalistic handlebar section, just like the old Lambies.
Although having a metal monocoque chassis with large metal body panels might not be a sound idea for an electric scooter, Lambretta wants to pitch it as a sensible and dependable option to the plethora of plasticky rebadged Chinese scooters flooding India. This is a similar thought process that has been adopted by Bajaj for its upcoming Chetak electric scooter. Lambretta promises that the G-Special will be a high-power scooter, going up against the Ather 450.
Further details regarding the new electric scooter will be revealed in February at the Auto Expo 2020 where the Lambretta G-Special electric scooter will make its global debut.
