  • Diesel Ban: Mahindra Scorpio, XUV500 to get downsized engine

With the Supreme Court’s decision on banning registration of diesel SUVs and cars with a capacity of 2000cc and above in Delhi NCR region set to stay for the time being, Mahindra & Mahindra is likely to launch the downsized version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine in the Scorpio and XUV500. It is expected that the power and torque figures won’t dip by much.

The 1.9-litre mHawk Scorpio prototype is said to been approved by the ARAI (Automotive Research Association Of India) and may reach dealerships in a couple of weeks. Sources say the XUV500 with the same motor is currently undergoing certification process. The 1.9-litre mHawk equipped SUV is likely to be sold across the country too.

During the launch of the KUV100, M&M’s executive director Pawan Goenka had said, ”We are certainly prepared for all eventualities. We are coming up with a petrol line-up, which will be made available over a period of time. This will be our defence over something like this.”

    This is interesting news.
Mahindra are well prepared now should the >2L diesel ban extend to other metros as well.
Like I said before... 2 Liters is the new 4 Meters.

So just when I bought a new 2.2, it becomes a dinosaur! Just like the 2.6 :-). That said, I think M&M will have to resort a lot of turbocharging and remapping to get the 1.9litre to put out 280 Nm / 120 Bhp and 330 Nm / 143 bhp in the Scorpio and XUV500 respectively, if they want to keep the same power specs. Although some say - "there is no replacement for displacement" - I think it's quite doable. A loss of 300 cc could be made up in other ways. Look at what Volvo has done with the XC90 / S60 etc, with a 2 litre engine!

This won't be easy. Their engine is reliable, long lasting as well as tolerant to whatever cocktail is passed off as diesel by random fuel bunks. The last thing they'll want is to compromise on these traits. Of course they can make up for the loss of 300cc but you dont want your 140bhp 1.9 XUV leaving you stranded because the diesel you filled on the highway overwhelmed the fuel filters or the injectors. VW's diesel engines are well known to struggle with diesel quality outside of metro cities.

But then I guess the 1.9 litre variants will be sold only in metros, where fuel quality is better. Plus the whole country is now moving to BS-4 fuel this year. And then metros may move to BS-6 by 2020. Look at the Skoda Yeti - similar power and torque figures as the XUV from a 1998 cc diesel engine, with the potential for more with a remap. The only worry though as Shreyans rightly pointed out is reliability. You are really pushing the tolerance limits of the engine by squeezing out more power and torque with smaller capacity. As of now, the current 2.2 Mhawk engine has proved to be reliable even after a couple of lakh km. The older CRDe, has been known to run for over 4 lakh km without trouble.

            That might well be true.
After moving to the 2.2 mHawk Scorpio, I missed my original 2.6TDI Scorpio. Felt like nothing could beat that engine in terms of driveability. However the same 2.2 mHawk in the XUV500 is a pleasure to drive be it in the city traffic or on the highway. So with smart mapping, the 1.9 might also be everything that the 2.2 is.

Mahindra and Mahindra launched its downsized diesel engine today. The 1.99-litre mHawk diesel engine is a downsized version of the 2.2-litre mHawk engine. This move is aimed at tackling the recent ban on registration of diesel vehicles with more that 2000cc engines in the Delhi-NCR region. This motor will put out a claimed 120bhp in the Scorpio and 140bhp in the XUV500. The Motor is a downsized M-Hawk, now displacing 1997 cc!

Its good that they maintained the same output even after downsizing.Chevrolet squeeze's 166ps and 360nm from their Cruze's 2.0L engine.would be nice to see others moving in the same direction now that they will have to keep the 2.0L target like the under 4metre compact vehicle mania here.
