The 2016 Superb is bigger and more luxurious than the outgoing model, it is also considerably lighter and expectedly, more efficient as well. The car was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. According to Skoda, it is one of the brand's best products yet, be it design, technology or dynamics.
The new Superb is based on Volkswagen’s flexible MQB platform and measures 4861mm long, 1468mm tall and 1864mm wide making it both longer and wider than the old car.
On the outside the 2016 Superb retains the limo-like appearance with modern design cues. As a result, the 2016 model features relatively sharper detailing for the headlights and the taillights helping it look more modern and stylish.
The interiors are a bit of a disappointment as the design is nowhere near as striking as the exterior. The dash looks borrowed from the less expensive Octavia. Fit and finish is typical Skoda but it lacks that 'wow' factor.
Wheelbase has gone up by 80mm for improved rear comfort, which was its USP at least in the Indian market. In fact, the car has truly earned its nameplate for the class-leading amount of legroom at the rear. Improved boot space, which is now rated at 625-litres, improves practicality.
Long list of equipment includes:-
Three-zone air conditioning
We expect all these features to make it to the Indian market.
Skoda India is likely to opt for the proven 1.8 TSI (180PS-250Nm), 2.0 TDI in either a 150PS, 340Nm state of tune or a more appetising 190PS, 400Nm tune with both manual and dual-clutch automatic gearbox units.
The 2016 Superb, then, is bigger, stylish and more efficient than the outgoing model and will reach the Indian market by early 2016. Skoda will most probably lauch the new Superb at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016. Taking into account the upgrades, we expect this new model cost between Rs 22-28 lakh and to generate good sales volumes for Skoda.
