  • Volvo S90 1:43 scale model pictures leaked

Volvo has been trying to keep the upcoming S90 under cover for sometime, but now we have a pretty clear picture on how the car will look like thanks to these images of scale models that have been leaked online.

The flagship S90’s design stays true to the Volvo Concept Coupe and Concept Estate previews earlier. The example shown here is finished in Onyx Black and has the same front-end design as the new XC90. So the S90 gets a long grille with vertical slats, LED day-time running lights which Volvo calls Thor’s Hammer, chrome windowpane and a clean hood. At the rear, it gets an all-LED trail lamp unit with the clusters shaped like a question mark turned on its side. The bootlid is sculpted with Volvo lettering running across. It also gets dual exhaust tips.

The new S90 will be offered in two body styles - S90 (sedan) and V90 (estate). The car will be based on the company’s new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform. The S90 will compete against Merc’s S-Class, BMW’s 7 series, Audi’s A8 and Jaguar’s XJ. The estate version is unlikely to come to India. Expect Volvo to price the car in the same bracket as it’s competitors.

The S90 will receive the same engine line-up and an 8-speed auto box as the XC90. The 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engine will put out power outputs ranging from 190bhp to 400bhp depending on the variant.

So the spy shots of the scale model didn’t lie after all. Volvo on December 2 unveiled the new XC90 at its HQ in Gothenburg, Sweden. The S90 will compete against cars like BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E Class. If you find the German sedans boring, then should suit you just fine.

The S90 in many ways is similar to the XC90 as in they share the same platform, engines, design and that brilliant infotainment system. Being a Volvo, expect a slew of safety features too. The City Safety feature has been improved. The previous version could detect pedestrians and could slow or stop the car if it senses an impact. Now, the car will be able to detect larger animals like a deer and alert the driver and apply the brakes to avoid impact. It will also come with Pilot Assist that debuted in the XC90 which allows the car to make steering inputs to keep the car in a lane while on cruise control. But this feature won’t make it to India because of current legislations regarding radar-based devices.

The T6 supercharged and turbocharged engine from the XC90 will be offered on the S90 as well. The S90 will also be offered with the same engine albeit with just turbocharging and will be called the T5. We expect the S90’s pricing to be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2016.
