Geneva Motor Show 2016

The Geneva Motor Show, one of the biggest expositions in the calendar, is upon us. Let’s take a look at the all the cars and concepts that are likely to be unveiled or launched from March 1st to March 13th at the 86th Salon International de l'Auto et Accessoires.

Alfa Romeo

Giulia: The Italian manufacturer is expected to release more details on the Giulia. The Giulia, Alfa Romeo hopes, will replace the BMW 3-Series as the sporty saloon of choice for enthusiasts. Going by the pictures, the Giulia is set to be a cracker of a car. Too bad it won’t be available in India though.

The sportiest version of the Giulia is likely to be powered by all-aluminium V6 with technology borrowed from Ferrari and is likely to produce 503bhp. The Giulia Quadrifoglio, Alfa claims, can hit a ton in 3.9 seconds. Lower powered variants are likely to be powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder petrol in different states of tune (178bhp, 247bhp and 326bhp), a 2.2-litre 4 cylinder diesel (133bhp, 178bhp and 207bhp) and a 3-litre V6 diesel putting out 335bhp.

Aston Martin

DB11: A couple of spy shots of the DB9 replacement have emerged online ahead of its official debut. The DB11 borrows styling cues from Aston Martins latest concepts like the CC100, which was unveiled in 2013 to celebrate 100 years of the brand and the DBX crossover which was unveiled at the last edition of the Geneva Motor Show.

The DB11 is will be based on an all-new platform and will fresh interiors. The DB11 will be powered by an all-new 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 producing around 600bhp. Aston Martin will, later, give buyers the option of the speccing their car with AMG V8s as well. The new platform, an evolution of the old VH platform, was created by Ian Minards who has been with Aston Martin for quite a long time.

Autocar UK has reported that the DB11 will get all-new suspension developed in-house and features double wishbones at the front and rear. The DB11, unlike the DB9, may be offered with a manual six-speed transmission. The other option would be a brand-new eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF. The BD11 is set to be Aston Martin’s flagship model and will be a proper four-seater.

Audi

Q2: Audi’s baby SUV, the Q2, is likely to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The Q2 will be based on the MQB platform. Audi has already released a clever teaser of the new SUV although no details of the powertrains and dimensions of the car are available.

BMW

M760Li xDrive: The German brand is set to introduce a faster 7-Series with M badging. The M760Li xDrive, as the name suggests, would also benefit from all-wheel drive. The M760Li will sit above the regular 7-Series. The M760Li will be powered by a fire-breathing 6.6-litre twin turbo V12 that is likely to produce awards of 590bhp. Whew!

Bugatti

Chiron: The successor to the Veyron is expected to cost €2.2million for the base spec! The Chiron, like the Veyron, is likely to be available as a roadster. Bugatti will even offer special edition cars that’s likely to increase the cost further. The Chiron will stick to the 16-cylinder arranged in a W formation and is expected to produce upwards of 1,500bhp! The projected top speed of the Chiron is said to be 288mph and Bugatti claims it will hit a ton in 2.3 seconds flat.

Citroen

SpaceTourer Hyphen 4x4: Citroen will showcase a 4x4 version of its MPV SpaceTourer. The MPV is named after a french pop band - Hyphen Hyphen. The show car will be adorned in a wild shade of orange inside and out. It will also get a body lit to give it the presence of an all-road MPV with plastic arches and sill guards.

Ferrari

GTC4 Lusso: This is nothing but a mid-life refresh of the four-seater Ferrari FF. The GTC4 Lusso gets an updated design with design cues from the Ferrari 488 GTB. At the rear, the GTC4 Lusso gets four round tail lights instead of the two on the FF. A new front grille and air vents on the wings are also part of the update for 2016. On the inside, the GTC4 Lusso gets a 10.25-inch screen.

Ferrari’s four-wheel drive system called ‘4RM’ has been upgraded. It now gets four-wheel steer like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The GTC4 Lusso gets a slide slip control as well to increase performance on the road and track.

Fiat

124 Spider: A roadster based on the Mazda MX-5. The 124 Spider will be manufactured aloneg with the MX-5 at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant. The 124 Spider sports a retro design like the original 124’s hexagonal grille and twin power bulges in the bonnet. Unlike the MX-5, however, the 124 Spider gets a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor. The Fiat 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged engine produces 138 horses and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. A hotter Abarth version may also be launched later on in the year.

Ford

The American carmaker will unveil the European version of its SUVs, the Yuga and Edge.

Honda

Civic hatchback prototype: The next-gem Civic is likely to be more sportier than the current version of the car sold in Europe. The next-gem Civic hatchback is set to enter production in 2017 and Honda is likely to showcase a prototype at this years’ Geneva Motor Show.


Infiniti

Q60 Sports Coupe: A new two-door coupe to take on Audi’s A5, BMW’s 4-Series and Merc’s C-Class coupe. The Q60 may be offered with a choice of two engines - a turbocharged in-line four or a six-cylinder petrol.

QX30 Premium Active: Infiniti’s latest crossover based on the Q30. The QX30 gets all-wheel drive, extra bit of ground clearance and some beefy body cladding to give it the crossover look. A 2-litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol producing 208bhp is what will power this crossover. The Qx30 will be equipped with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic.

Jaguar

F-type SVR: Bonkers version of the already hot F-type. The SVR will get more powerful than the standard F-type, stiffer suspension, a titanium exhaust and aggressive aero kit. The supercharged 5.0-litre will now produce 567bhp and will be capable of hitting 200mph. Expect it to sound absolutely ballistic.

KIA

Niro concept: KIA calls this an HUV or Hybrid Utility Vehicle. As the name suggests the Niro will be a hybrid car powered by a 1.6-litre petrol motor coupled to a lithium-polymer battery capable of producing 1.56kWh and a 32kW electric motor. A six-speed twin-clutch transmission is expected to send power to all four wheels.

Volkswagen AG has finally revealed the first official pictures of the upcoming crossover based on the Polo platform. Speculation is rife that the concept may be called the T-Cross.

From the teaser image, it is quite clear that the T-Cross will have dual LED headlights with square LED daytime running lights. The radiator grille gets honeycomb shaped vents and there is even black body cladding on the lower half of the car.

The exterior of the concept is much like the VW T-Roc concept that was showcased at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

The fish generation Polo, on which the T-Cross is based on, was introduced way back in 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show. The next generation of the popular hatchback is likely to be based on the new MQB platform is expected to be launched in 2018. The T-Cross is expected to be based on that platform.

The new Audi Q2 will follow the German marque’s new design language that was previewed by the Audi e-tron quattro at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is expected to get sweptback headlamps with LED DRLs, a large hexagonal grille and sporty bumpers. The Q2 is expected to measure anywhere between 4 metres and 4.4 metres considering Audi has to make space for a smaller SUV in the Q1.

The Q2 is based on the MQB platform that also underpins the VW Golf and Audi A3. The Q2 could get a 1.4-litre TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine for India. In other markets, expect a more powerful 2.0-litre TFSI and TDI engines to do duty under the hood. These motors could be coupled with either a six-speed manual or six-speed S tronic or 7-speed S ironic gearbox. Higher variants could also get the option of quattro AWD system. Sounds like a neat little package for our country right.

Maserati has released a teaser image of their upcoming SUV Levate ahead of the Geneva Motor Show. The Levante is expected to look like the Kubang concept. The Maserati Levante is expected to hit European showrooms in the second half of the year. The SUV is likely to be based on a modified version of the rear-wheel drive platform used by the Ghibli and Quattraporte. It is still unclear why Maserati refused to go with the Jeep platform being part of the Fiat-Chrysler group.

The Levante is expected to be offered with a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine or a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8. If you need a diesel, your only option is a 3-litre turbocharged V6 engine. An eight-speed auto box with all-wheel drive is expected to be part of the standard package. A plug-in hybrid will also be launched later on.

Hyper-car makers Lamborgini will unveil Centenario, a 770 horsepower tribute to the brand’s legendary founder Ferruccio Lamborgini on his 100^th birth anniversary, at the Geneva Motor Show 2016.

Centenario is a heavily pumped up version of the Aventador. Centario has a low-slung stance, meaner looking front air splitter, revised LED headlamps and taillights, sportier rear diffuser and contrast yellow accents, which differentiates it from a normal Aventador.

An ultra-limited edition variant, a total of 40 Centenario will be made, of which 20 will be convertibles and the rest be coupe variants. Centenario is an heavily pumped up version of the Aventador.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated (not turbocharged!) 6.5 litre V-12, propelling the car from 0-100 kmph in just 2.8 seconds. The powered is delivered to all wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.The 0-300 kmph mark comes in just 23.5 seconds and the Centarino is capable of hitting a top speed of 350 kmph!

The Audi Q2, a mini premium crossover was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show today. The Q2 is based on Volkswagen's MQB platform. Crisp clean lines and subtle detailing makes the Q2 looks nice!

The Q2 measures 4.19 m in length, 1.79 m in width, 1.51 m in height and has a wheelbase of 2.6 m. making it a compact hatch. The Q2 gets both TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines with power outputs ranging from 116 to 119 PS. Q2 comes in both manual and automatic transmission, Quatrro all wheel drive will be available in select variants.

The rear looks wide, sharp LED tail-lamps and dual chrome tipped exhaust looks nice.

Gorgeous 19 inch alloys add to that premium feel.

Simplistic design theme on the inside. Stand-alone MMI interface, rotary vents and what looks like toggle switches.

The rear looks a bit cramped, the front seats are not scooped out!

Generous boot space, with what looks like split-folding rear seats.

The production spec of the much awaited supercar killer Koenigsegg Regera, was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2016 yesterday. For starters, the Regara is a plug-in-hybrid hypercar. Powered by a 5.0 litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine which produces 1100 hp. And is assisted by three electric motors, which gives an output of nearly 700 hp.

The combined power output exceeds 1500 PS, and the torque figure stands at 2000 Nm. The transmission is a Koenigsegg single speed transmission (patent pending).

To top this up, the Regera just weighs 1590 kilograms, which gives it a power to weight of 1:1! That is freaking scary.

Battery pack is a 4.5 KWh 800 V unit (Regera is the world’s first production car to feature an 800V battery). The Regera which goes up against Buggati Chiron and can do 0-100 kmph in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 in 6.6 seconds, 0-300 kmph in a mere 10.9 seconds and 0-400 kmph in an incredible 20 seconds!

Regera is wide, low slung and gets Koenigsegg’s signature wraparound windshield.The interiors comes with all the creature comforts like electric heated seats, touch interface infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Wi-Fi, bird’s eye view camera among others.

Regera gets double wishbone suspension with triple damper at the rear. The Regera sheds speed using ventilated ceramic discs with calipers measuring 397mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear.

The wheels doing the duty on Regera, 277/37/R19s at the front and 345/30/R20 at the rear.

To improve dynamics Regera also gets active rear wing and front flaps which produces 450 kg total down force at 250km/h. Can't wait to see pit this against Buggati Chiron!

A popular comedian and prankster from the UK, Simon Brodkin, apparently disrupted a speech at the Volkswagen stall at the Geneva Motor Show today, during a presentation on the new Volkswagen Up! (or as Jeremy Clarkson pronounces it - up exclamation mark). He targeted the German brand for its emissions scandal. BBC news reported that Brodkin, dressed as a VW engineer, walked on to the stage while Volkswagen board member Jürgen Stackmann was making a speech and said he has a new cheat box and “no one needs to know about this”, even proceeding to install it! Hahaha. Hilarious. Have a look…

The Aston Martin DB 11 finally made its preview at the Geneva Motor Show. A treat to the eyes! Powered by a 600bhp 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which makes it the most powerful production DB car ever to be made by Aston Martin. The engine is mated to a 8-speed automatic ZF transmission, driving modes include- GT, Sport and Sport Plus. 0-100kmph is dispatched in a mere 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 322 kmph.

The interior gets a 12-inch TFT central display and a digital driver's instrument cluster. 360-degree bird's-eye-view camera system come as standard.
