With the Zest in mind and with the kind of improvement Tata Motors has made in it, Bolt was one car that a lot of hatchback buyers have been waiting for. And it is finally here, launched at a starting price of Rs 4.44 lakh for the base petrol variant. The top-of-the line variant has been priced at Rs 6.99 lakh. All prices (ex-showroom Delhi).

The base XE variant of the Tata Bolt is the cheapest and the least equipped of the lot. Aside from power steering and air conditioner with heater, it comes with other basics like adjustable front head restraints, rear door child lock, door open display and key in reminder and remote fuel and tailgate opening.

Spend around Rs 60,000-70,000 more and to purchase the second XM variant and needless to say you have more features on offer. Over and above all that is offered on the base, the XM variant of the Bolt has power windows up front as well as at the back, electronically adjustable ORVMs, speed sensing auto locking and front fog lamps. Moreover, it also gets important safety features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Cornering Stability Control (CSC). Aside from this, it also gets steering mounted controls, a ConnextNext infotainment system by Harman with USB, AUX and Bluetoooth connectivity all of which is absent in the base XE variant. And then there are some additions on the inside too, with fabric inserts on the door and chrome surrounds for the AC vents.

A jump up from the XM to the XMS variant is a short one, not just in terms of features on offer but also with regards to price. There are no changes on the exterior and the interior front except that the XMS variant get driver side seat height adjuster. But the biggest advantage in going for the XMS variant is that you also get airbags for the driver and the co-passenger.

Needless to say that the top-end XT variant gets the works. To start with it comes with a touchscreen infotainment system that isn’t available in any of the other variants. Smartphone integrated navigation system is also a smart addition to the list of features. The top-of-the-line variant is the only one to get smoked projector headlamps and alloy wheels. Rear defogger, rear wipe wash, and fog lamps at the back are some other additional features above the XMS variant.

Going by the list of features on offer in each of the variants and their pricing, to us then the XMS variant seem the most sensible offering if you do not have the budget for a top-end trim. It has just the right combination of features for comfort as well as safety.
