The EQG 580 further strengthens the German manufacturer’s electric portfolio

Mercedes-Benz had earlier showcased the electric G-wagon concept and has taken a significant step towards the future of electric mobility by taking the curtains off the production-spec model, called the EQG 580

Exterior : Distinctive design elements stay true to the iconic silhouette

The all-new electric G 580 stays true to the design heritage of the G-wagon, featuring its signature upright SUV silhouette. From the classic round headlights to the squared-off grille (with surrounding LED strip), which has been blanked off, the front view remains true to its original design.

In profile, it retains the iconic boxy design with upright high bonnet lining. For improved  aerodynamics, the A-pillar now features a cladding and a lip spoiler on the roof have been added. The five twin-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels painted in gloss-black and rear wheel arches get air curtains to further aid aerodynamics.

At the rear, an optional rectangular box on the tailgate goes in line with the design language and can be used to house the charging cables. But if you don’t want it, you can still pick it up with the regular spare wheel.

Interior : Intuitive, extensive, and feature-laden

The interior of the EQG 580 remains almost unchanged with its iconic design featuring a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with EV-specific graphics. The interior trims are finished in open-pore walnut wood finish with extensive usage of nappa leather all around. Thankfully, Merc has retained physical controls for all important functions, making it easier to use on the fly.

Off Road Prowess : True to its DNA

With its legendary off-road DNA, the EQG can stay erect even at side slope inclines of up to 35 degrees. Water wading capacity is impressive at 850 mm, which is 150 mm more than its ICE counterparts, clearance between the axles of around 250 mm, approach angle of 32 degrees, departure angle of 35 degrees and breakover angle of 20.3 degrees. The conventional differential locks are now electrically actuated using torque vectoring.

G-Turn : Enables the EQG to rotate on its own axis and make two complete round turns to help aid in off road situations or for parking.

G- Steering :Helps in making sharp turns and hence reducing the turning radius of the vehicle by controlling the targeted torque sent to individual wheels.

Intelligent Off-road Crawl : Ensuring ideal propulsion on off-road surfaces, it helps in maintaining lower speeds for better maneuverability.

Transparent Bonnet : In addition to the 360-degree camera, this feature enables the driver to have a clearer picture of what lies beneath the vehicle.

Powertrain : Unmatched off-road prowess with a hint of sustainability

Similar to its ICE (internal combustion engine) powered counterpart, the electric model retains the ladder frame, modified to  seamlessly integrate the electric drive system while maintaining the combination of an independent front suspension. With a capacity of 116 kWh, this battery propels the EQG  with ample energy, delivering a range of up to 473 kilometres according to WLTP standards.

Four individual motors at each wheel churn out 108 kW, adding up to a combined power output of 587 PS and 1164 Nm. With the top speed being electronically limited to 180 kmph, the EQG 580 can sprint from a standstill to 100 kmph in 4.7 seconds.

The EQG can be charged with both AC and DC charging options. Upon using AC charging, the EQG gets a charging capacity of 11 kW and upon DC charging, it can support up to 200 kW.

Individualisation Options : Personalisation more accessible

The EQG 580 opens up a plethora of individualisation and personalisation options with special edition trims including Edition One, AMG Line, Manufaktur range and Night Package. All these personalisation options further add up to the extensive features list by altering in cosmetic, mechanical, and convenience features.

The EQG 580 will be launched on Indian soil, but its timing is yet to be determined. It is expected to command a price tag of Rs 2.5 crore and will go up against other upcoming electric off-roaders such as the Land Rover Defender and Jeep Wrangler.
