The LeMans project at Audi began in 1997. When Audi was banned from using their superior Quattro technology in touring car racing, the German car maker searched for a new motorsport discipline to participate in. Audi first took part at the prestigious LeMans endurance racing series 11 years ago and have won on 10 occasions ever since.

Audi is now bracing up for the 2012 season and has been testing the LeMans winning LMP1 behind closed doors. Audi recently went public with their second LMP1. Audi sport recently ran tests with two vehicles at the Sebring (Florida Circuit). Taking turns at the wheel of the two development vehicles are the 2011 Le Mans winners, the Swiss Marcel Fassler, the German Andre Lotterer and the Frenchman Benoit Treluyer.

Audi has celebrated nine victories at the Sebring 12 Hours race since the 2000 season, but the real reason for testing their car at the 5.95 kilometer track are 17 very different types of corners which serve as very different types of test conditions.

While the components tests have already started, Audi will not announce details of the 2012 racing programme, the driver line-up and the technical state of development till a later date.
