Over the years, Honda has earned a special place in Indian hearts with the City. It thus comes with little surprise that the sedan has made it to this list yet again with 77,548 units sold in the previous fiscal year. The petrol Honda City is available in both automatic and manual options while the diesel comes with a manual transmission only.
This names presence on the list might take some by surprise, but the iconic minivan has maintained its volumes in India, ever since its launch in the mid-1980s. Used to serve a variety of purposes, the Omni sold 79,949 units in India last fiscal year. First of six Marutis on this list, in descending order of positions, the car continues to be powered by an 800cc 3-cylinder engine.
The only SUV on the list, the Bolero sold 81,559 units in FY16. Priced between Rs 6.5 lakh – Rs 8 lakh, the Bolero comes in both BS3 and BS4 variants with RWD and 4WD options. It can also be customised with the help of Mahindra’s in-house customization services.
Satiating India’s well-documented obsession for fuel efficiency, the Celerio has been an instant hit in the country. Maruti’s second car on the list, it sold no less than 87,428 units last fiscal year. Despite stiff competition from the likes of Hyundai’s fleet of small cars, the Celerio has made the hatchback segment its own.
India’s second largest carmaker gives the closest competition to Maruti in terms of volumes. First of its two top-selling cars in the country, the Elite i20’s sales entered into six digits with 1,04,841 units. Offered in no less than 10 variants, the car fulfils the needs of a wide variety of audience.
Made for and in India, the hatchback has garnered towering volumes for the Korean carmaker. With an astonishing 1,26,181 units, the Grand i10 has lived up to the standards set by its predecessors in the country.
The list is all about Maruti from here! Clocking 1,69,555 units in the previous fiscal year, the WagonR comes in fourth with its durability in the private and the taxi sectors. First launched in the 1990s, the tall hatchback also comes in an automatic option now.
If you want to know what India wants, you need to meet the guys at Maruti Suzuki. With their comprehensive understanding of the country’s market, they have managed to maintain the popularity of the Swift ever since its launch in 2005. The hatchback effortlessly continued on the same path last year too, selling 1,95,043 units in the process.
The highest-selling sedan in Indian history, the DZire was one of the only two cars to cross the 2-lakh sales mark in India last year. Selling 2,34,242 units, the car is the fifth product from the Indo-Japanese collaboration to feature on this list.
The country’s most popular hatchback has done it again! The Alto broke several records last year as it steamrolled to 2,63,422 units. The introduction of a CNG option and more powerful variant have worked wonders for Maruti. With the Alto, the carmaker sealed the top four positions on the list, en route to accumulating a market share of a mind-boggling 73 per cent last year.
