The Indian Car of the Year, currently in its 10th year, is a joint effort by a select few Indian automotive publications. The award is aimed to be a common platform to recognise greatness in Indian automotive sphere. With over ten cars contending for top honours this year and with competition tighter than ever before, the Hyundai Elite i20 has taken the award for the 2015 Indian Car of the Year.
The new Honda City and the new Maruti Suzuki Ciaz were also in contention for the award but was pipped by the hot selling hatchback. Hyundai is the only manufacturer to have ever won three Indian Car of the Year awards and also the only manufacturer to have won a back to back award. The 2014 Indian Car of the Year award was presented to the Hyundai Grand i10.
The Hyundai Elite i20 has not only been getting great reviews from automobile journalists but also from the Indian car buying public with over 60 thousand bookings so far and over 32 thousand units delivered in under 4 months of launch. The Hyundai i20 comes equipped with two engine options, a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 83PS of peak power and a 1.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine making 90PS of peak power.
Past winners of the Indian Car of the Year award include the Renault Duster (2013), Maruti Suzuki Swift (2012), Ford Figo (2011), Tata Nano (2010), Honda City (2009), Hyundai i10 (2008), Honda Civic (2007) and the original Maruti Suzuki Swift (2006).
