Mercedes-Benz is all set to launch their smallest and most affordable offering in India, the A-Class luxury hatchback, today. Expected to be slotted under Rs 20 lakh, the A-Class will target aspirational, young, first-time luxury car buyers as well as bigger luxury car owners who are looking to buy another luxury car.
As a vehicle, the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class has a lot going for it with those bold design cues and the large grille with its prominent three-pointed star logo. Inside, the A-Class features those trademark high quality Mercedes-Benz interiors that will pamper occupants with high quality materials along with creature comforts and gadgets that are available on luxury vehicles that cost much more. Safety features will also be on par with those available on bigger luxury cars with a host of features such as ABS, EBD, ESP, attention assist, seven-airbags, etc along with a strong structure that combine to give the A-Class a five star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Mercedes-Benz has lined up a host of engines to power the A-Class for different markets world wide. For the India spec model, the A180 petrol engined A-Class will be on offer. The 1.6 litre four cylinder turbocharged motor develops 123PS of power and 200Nm of torque and can power the car from 0-100 km/h in 9.76 seconds and onwards to a speed of 202 km/h. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox that has three modes, namely, Economy, Sport and Manual and can be controlled via paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.
What the Indian market should also get is the A180 CDI diesel powered A-Class featuring a 1461cc engine with 110PS of power and 260Nm of torque.
Of course, what matters above all else will be the price tag that the Mercedes A-Class will feature in India for its success on our shores. Based on the price of the larger Mercedes B-Class that ranges between Rs 21.90 and Rs 25.60 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), we expect the new A-Class hatchback to be priced well under Rs 20 lakh. This will mean that the A-Class will have absolutely no competition in the market and Mercedes could further add to the appeal by pricing the car around Rs 18 lakh making it a rather attractive entry into the prestigious luxury car segment in India.
