New Mahindra Scorpio to form basis for new Bolero and Xylo variants

The new Mahindra Scorpio has been upgraded significantly even though the model wasn't broke. And by broke we mean, it was still the highest selling SUV in its class before the new version rolled out. Mahindra has spent quite a bit on developing the new Scorpio and though it expects the new SUV to outsell the older one, the new Scorpio has brought some other benefits along with it as well.

We know now that the new Mahindra Scorpio uses an all new chassis or ladder frame. This frame is 6 kg lighter than the older one but twice as stiff. The new chassis, the new suspension geometry and the components like improved dampers and bump stops are the biggest reasons for the better ride and handling characteristics of the new Scorpio.

Now these learnings as well as the components themselves will be used to improve every new ladder frame SUV Mahindra brings out in the passenger space. The first SUV to sport this modular chassis, which allows for different wheelbase and track length options, will be the new Bolero. The Bolero has for long been the vehicle of choice in smaller towns for its size, ruggedness and ability it take on the rough.

Now with the new chassis and suspension and improved styling and better interiors, Mahindra hopes, it would be seen as an even better proposition. Like the new Mahindra Scorpio, the new Bolero too will move upmarket with a plusher interior design, better fit and finish and better quality of materials.

The new Mahindra Scorpio platform will also underpin the upcoming Xylo variants which includes the sub-4 metre Quanto. The new chassis which is split into three parts has a customisable middle section which allows for different wheelbase lengths. Moreover, the new chassis can also accommodate chassis extensions - both front and back - to alter the overhangs of a vehicle. The new Xylo will run longer extensions than the new Scorpio, particularly at the rear, as it promises to offer even more space than the current version.

As for the new Quanto, given its sub 4 metre length and a smaller wheelbase, the middle section of the chassis will be really small and it will run almost negligible chassis extensions to meet norms that will allow it to avail small car excise benefits.

The new Bolero and the Xylo versions based on the new Mahindra Scorpio platform are expected to make debut later this year or early next year.
