If you thought mopeds have long been dead in the country, think again as TVS Motor has launched the XL 100 four-stroker in the state of Tamil Nadu

They might still be the most popular means of personal transport in some developing South East Asian countries, but mopeds are all but a dead species of two-wheelers in our country. It is only when you venture into the hinterland that you can occasionally spot the decade-odd moped, battered and on its last legs but still dutifully ferrying man and fodder (and the occasional small domestic animal) from market to home to paddy fields.

It is in this Indian scenario that TVS Motor is introducing the XL 100 moped in the country, albeit only in the state of Tamil Nadu, where this mode of transportation still has its fair share of takers. And, the XL 100 is actually the third TVS moped to go on sale in the country at present, following the XL Super and XL Heavy.

Powered by a 99.7 cc four-stroke engine, the TVS XL 100 pumps out a piddly 4.2 PS power that is enough to propel the lightweight machine on to a top speed of 60 kmph. TVS claims that the moped returns 67 kmpl, which, coupled to its four-litre fuel tank, should be enough for all household errand runs. The whole shebang weights a paltry 75 kilos, but it does have considerable load-ferrying capabilities, being capable of hauling up to 130 kgs.

"The all new four stroke moped TVS XL 100 has been designed to meet the evolving needs of today s customer and is one of the most affordable, reliable, easy to ride, powerful multi utility two wheelers in the market," said J S Srinivasan, Vice President, Sales and Service, TVS Motor Company.

The TVS XL 100 comes in five colours of black, red, green, blue and grey, and is priced at Rs 29,539, ex-showroom, Tamil Nadu.
