Market leader and the world’s largest two wheeler company by volume, Hero MotoCorp continued its good run clocking sales of over five lakh units in December with 5,26,097 units.
In fact, Hero has established yet another landmark with its best-ever calendar year performance, selling a record 66,45,787 units in the period January-December 2014. This translates into a growth of 8 per cent over the previous calendar year (2013) when the company had sold 61,83,849 two wheelers.
In second position is Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, clocking sales of 3,48,737 two wheeler units in December, a growth of 18 per cent over December 2013. In the calendar year 2014, Honda has emerged as the highest market share gainer, posting 24 per cent domestic growth in the April-December 2014 period, compared to 13 per cent for the entire two wheeler industry.
Bajaj Auto posted a marginal decline of 6 per cent in total December sales, but still holds third position in volumes, selling a total of 2,46,233 motorcycles in December this year as against 2,60,645 units in December 2013.
Scooters continue to ramp up sales numbers for TVS Motor Company, increasing 25 per cent from 41,817 units in December 2013 to 52,411 units in December 2014. Overall, TVS recorded 19 per cent sales growth for two wheelers in the month of December, with total two wheeler sales standing at 1,81,994 units against 1,53,358 units in the same month last year. Of this, domestic sales stood at 1,57,438 units in December, a growth of 19 per cent over 1,32,664 units in December 2013.
Yamaha India also posted good sales figures in the calendar year till December 2014, with the launch of the family-oriented scooter Alpha as well as the V2.0 variants of the FZ, FZ-S and SZ-RR in 2014. In December 2014, Yamaha sold 44,602 two wheeler units, a growth of 12 per cent over 39,777 units sold in December 2013.
Growth at Suzuki Motorcycle India continues with its two new products, the 155cc Gixxer motorcycle and Let’s scooter showing good performance in the market. The company registered a 42.65 per cent increase in the December 2014 sales figures as compared to December 2013. Overall Suzuki sold 29,036 units in December, as compared to 20,355 units in December 2014.
“Our concerted efforts to promote the Gixxer and Let’s have met with positive customer sentiment. Customer satisfaction and word-of-mouth publicity are key factors that work in our favour. Growth in sales indicates that the market is responding favourably to our products. We hope this trend continues into the New Year 2015,” said Atul Gupra, Executive Vice President, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd.
Royal Enfield concluded the year with a strong sales performance, with a waiting period for most products at the company’s dealerships across the country. In all, the company sold 28,634 units in December, with 28,179 units sold in the domestic market and exports accounting for 245 units. Overall, RE posted a 48 per cent growth over the same period in 2013.
Mahindra Two Wheelers, meanwhile, sold just 13,445 units in December, with domestic sales accounting for 12,835 units in the month and exports reaching 610 units. The company is however, optimistic on the latest scooter Gusto adding to sales numbers in 2015 as it readies to ramp up the distribution and service network.
