The Mitsubishi Pajero is synonomous with the Dakar Rally. Thanks to its rally pedigree, the Pajero has a robust cult following across the globe and it's a machine that has lived up to its reputation of being a no nonsense SUV that can tackle the outdoors without batting an eyelid. In India, the Pajero SFX has proved its mettle and while customers have enjoyed its off road manerisms, it never really offered a great ride on tarmac. Further to this, the SFX was getting a little long in the tooth and Pajero loyalists had their fingers crossed for a model upgrade. The wait is finally over as Mitsubishi has ushered in the latest avatar of the Pajero in the form of the Pajero Sport for the Indian market.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport comes with a 2.5 litre, 16 valve, turbocharged, intercooled diesel engine that generates 178PS of power @ 4000 rpm and 400Nm of torque @ 2000 – 2500 rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, and further to this, the Pajero also sports a state of the art four wheel drive system which will be a definite boon while tackling obstacles off road. From the looks of it, Mitsubishi have insured that the new Pajero isn't left wanting in terms of power delivery and overall capability.
In terms of ride quality, which was an issue with the predecessor, Mitsubishi claims to have addressed this by its Double wishbone with coil spring suspension upfront and 3-link coil spring suspension at the back. Better ride quality coupled with the new engine and transmission will mean, rest assured, the new Pajero Sport will be more convenient to drive in urban environs with its new manual gearbox and a minimum turning radius of just 5.6 meters.
The Pajero Sport comes loaded with gizmos and gadgets that until now have stayed clear of the Pajero in India. The new car comes equipped with safety features such as Anti-lock brakes, front airbags, cruise control, projector headlamps, reverse camera and parking sensors. On the inside, the Pajero Sport gets an mp3 stereo system, leather seats, climate control, air-conditioning vents for all rows, etc.
The Pajero Sport gets an on-demand Super Select 4WD system and a limited slip differential at the back, which will allow the vehicle to live-up to its iconic off-road repute.
Priced at Rs. 23.53 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is more than capable of taking on its rivals in the Indian market, namely, the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, especially now that it comes loaded with features that can embarrass both its rivals.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will come as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), bookings for the new vehicle will start from March 13, 2012.
