Volvo in India is counting on the all-new 2015 Volvo XC90 to help it garner the attention of Indian luxury SUV buyers and is hoping to sell about 500 units of car this year, provided it can get the desired number of units allotted to the Indian subsidiary from its head quarters in Sweden.
Volvo dealers in India will start to accept pre-selling booking from April-May 2015 for the all-new Volvo XC90, and are targeting at 201 cars. Though the official launch will take place in September, deliveries are expected to begin by October 2015. Internationally, the 2015 Volvo XC90 has pre-sold about 16,000 units.
The company's flagship SUV has received a major makeover and features segment best safety features and equipments, and continues with its traditional desirable yet understated exterior design along with comfortable seating for seven people. Since most of these safety features depend on radar system, use of which by civilians is banned by the Government of India, Volvo will disable these features in the Indian variants. In future, if the laws in India permit the use of radar then just a software upgrade on the 2015 XC90 by Volvo will reinstate these life saving technologies.
In India the SUV will be offered in two variants - the Momentum and Inscription which has slightly different exterior design highlights to separate the two. The interior of the 2015 Volvo XC90 is extremely elegant with just a handful of buttons (eight to be precise) and a potrait style 9-inch touchscreen.
The XC90 Momentum trim will come with keyless entry, panoramic sunroof, electrically operated bootlid, cornering headlights, rear camera, hill decent control, 12.3-inch instrument cluster, tyre pressure monitor, park assist front and rear sensors and a navigation system.
Above these features the Inscription will include a air-suspension system, Four-C chassis, slightly different front grille, dual integrated taillights, heads up display, leather dashboard and Nappa leather on the seats with ventilated front seats. It also gets Bowers & Wilkins music system with air-ventilated sub woofers, a first in the automobile industry.
Powering the two variants will be a new D5 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel motor, good for 228PS of max power and 470Nm of torqued mated to a 8-speed automatic gearbox. The company is also considering to introduce the petrol T8 engine option, and even a four-seater variant.
The 2015 Volvo XC90 will compete against Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and will be priced around Rs 65-70 lakh in India.
