The Jaguar F-Type Coupe and Convertible are all set to get a facelift soon. A heavily camouflaged version of the coupe has been spied near Jaguar’s test facility in Nurburgring, Germany. The interesting bit though was what was under the hood. No, it wasn’t the thunderous V8 or the roaring V6. Instead, the test mule had a more modest 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine under the hood. So has Jaguar gone soft? No, they haven’t. While the existing 3.0-litre and 5.0-litre engine will remain, the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine was conceived to take on Porsche’s new 718 Boxter and Cayman, both of which now get a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as standard. The Porsche 718 Boxter and Cayman come with two engine options - a 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder and a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Even though details are scarce, many suspect the new petrol engine to be part of the Ingenium range of petrol engines that will soon power the XE and XF saloons and the all-new F-Pace SUV. This engine is also likely to feature in the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport before making it to the F-Type facelift. Expect the 2.0-litre turbocharged four pot to put out 300bhp or more considering the fact that the 718 Boxter and Cayman comes with two engine options - a 2.0-turbocharged four-cylinder putting out 300bhp and a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 250bhp. Will it be quick? Expect the F-Type’s to reach a 100 from standstill in around five seconds with a top speed exceeding 270kmph. There’s a fat chance that this version will come with a manual as well as an automatic gearbox. What’s new other than the engine? Cosmetically, expect the new F-Type to feature all-new full LED headlamp units along with the usual nip and tuck inside and out. These spy shots of the F-Type with the 2.0-litre four pot show a new exhaust as well. It’s a single squared-off unit instead of the V6’s twin central pipes or the V8’s quad pipes. Expect the convertible version to feature the same changes too. Inside, the new F-Type will get the F-Pace’s updated infotainment system with a widescreen display and pinch-to-zoom functionality. Don’t expect the new Jaguar F-Type to appear in public till the Geneva Motor Show next March.
