The Toyota Innova launched way back in 2005 has stood the test of time and has been a favourite among families and fleet-owners alike. But not wanting to be seen as complacent, Toyota is planning on rolling out an all-new model net year. The manufacturer has begun testing the next-generation MPV and it will be based on Toyota’s Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform with minor updates. That means it will still employ a ladder-on-frame construction and will share the platform with the next-generation Fortuner.

Over the last decade, Toyota managed to keep the Innova fresh with three cosmetic updates. The updates to the Innova made what was a cute baby elephant into a tusker in musth and not everyone took a liking to it. Still, the Innova remained a comfortable MPV for covering long distances, especially the one with the captain chairs in the middle row.

The new Innova, however, takes it to a whole new level with aggressive and edgy styling for the front-end though the silhouette of the car sort of remains the same. The front styling takes cues from Toyota’s global products like the Corolla Altis and Camry with a rectangular grille with chrome slats that extend into the headlights. The air dams on the front too is adorned with chrome slats and it is higher and wider than before. The spy shots indicate the new version will come with projector headlamps and day-time running lights (DRLs) as well.

On the side, subtle updates can be made out, especially the re-profiled greenhouse with a steeply raked rear three quarter window. The doors seem to be the same as the outgoing model but the new model will get updated alloy designs.

Though no shots of the interiors have emerged, sources say Toyota is working hard to improve space and quality of materials used inside. Expect the new Innova to come with an updated if not larger touchscreen infotainment system. The infotainment feature will feature voice command recognition, Bluetooth, Aux and USB and SD card support. Higher trims may get a console with HDMI input and Miracast WiFi support along with internet-browsing facility. Toyota might also offer its intelligent key and push-button start feature on the top-end variant. Toyota will also continue with the same seating configuration as before across trim levels.

The new Innova's interior will be similar to the 2016 Fortuner slated for launch later this year.
The next-generation MPV will come with a new range of engines, internally known as the GD series. The GD series of engines come in 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre turbo diesel units. Both these engines feature ‘Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion’ (ESTEC) technology and get a variable-geometric turbocharger. The 2.4-litre motor puts out a respectable 160bhp and peak torque of 400Nm and we expect this unit will be the one that will find favour with families and fleet-owners. The 2.8-litre motor pumps out 177bhp and 450Nm of torque. Both motors will be available with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4-litre, however, can be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission as well. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with Dual VVT-i will also be available. All the variants are available with FWD layout. The 2.8-diesel gets both FWD and AWD.

The top-end variant will be equipped with a total of seven airbags, while the base version will get dual front airbags. The new-generation MPV may also get stability control and hill-start assist standard across all trims.
The new Innova will not be unveiled at the Auto Expo and will be launched at a much later date. We expect the new Innova to be pricier than the outgoing model with the top-of-the-line model retailing for almost Rs 20 lakh.
