Q.Mahindra Scorpio, XUV To Get Petrol Engine This Year

Mahindra used to have petrol engines on and off in the past in its products. The first generation Scorpio was launched with a 2-litre petrol engine that put out 116 bhp of power and 187 Nm of torque. The engine didn't do to well in "Mileage conscious" India, as it gave only about 10 kmpl. However, it was fitted on a number of Scorpios that were exported to Europe and the Middle East. It was a fairly tame unit though - although it was weird to hear a silent Scorpio. In the past, it had also fitted a 1.8 litre Isuzu engine in its MM440 Jeep model. This was the petrol-engined variant of the MM540. And of course, in more recent times, when Mahindra acquired the Logan - reborn as the Verito - from its marriage with Renault, the Verito came with a 1.4 litre petrol variant. Needless to say, none of Mahindra's petrol forays have worked out well for it in the past. But the times, they are a changin! The KUV100 is proof of that - there is a 40% demand for the petrol variant I'm told. Oh, and I have to add, all its CNG models are basically petrols! How about the Mahindra Bolero MaxiTruck? It's got a 2.5 litre petrol/CNG engine putting out 70 bhp and 181 Nm of torque.

They are the only homegrown manufacturer who have listened to customers and given them what they want. Like I mentioned elsewhere though, I just wish they made a proper sedan for the market. But that's just wishful thinking I guess.

Kudos to Mahindra for reacting to everything so fast - be it customer demands or government commands. The whole situation though - it's making me mad.

Small displacement turbo petrols preferably with a micro hybrid system are the hot cakes of the day. Even in longer term, since petrols can easily be converted to run on CNG, it'll be easy to keep you car running once we run out of oil. Mahindra has always been quick to react, and same can be seen here.

Mahindra had invested Rs 1,000 crore last year to develop a couple of new petrol engines through the next two or three years. These engines are rumoured to displace 1.5-, 1.6-, and 2.2-litre. The last one is rumoured to be co-developed with SsangYong Motor Company.
