Taking a motorcycle out on a long road trip can be immensely rewarding. More so, when you do it solo. Often, riders are confused about what to pack and what to avoid. So, this post is dedicated to help riders on preparing their bike for a road trip, especially to places like Leh- Ladakh since & tis the season to get Leh-d! (I know it is a cliched pun, but it never gets old!) You don't need to be this hardcore. Always travel light. PC: motorcyclemojo.com First, service your bike properly prior to the road trip. Go to the service station you trust. Get all the parameters checked, such as oil levels, air filter condition, chain lubrication, tightening of nuts and bolts, air pressure levels, electricals, brake pads, brake lines, clutch and throttle cables, and wheel alignment. After you are through with your servicing, follow this checklist of things to carry: * Take the spare bike keys with you. You will never know when you might need them! * Carry the toolkit supplied by the manufacturer. Additionally, you can also carry a tool-roll containing a good quality multifunction bike tool set. * Carry some spare clutch and throttle cables. You can also tie them along the frame of the bike with zip-ties so that it is easy to install them in case the old one fails. * Also, carry a set of additional tubes in case your bike has tubed tyres. This is important, especially when you go to places that are far from civilization. If your bike has tubeless tyres, carry a tubeless-tyre repair kit, with a tyre iron. * Take a spare spark plug and a spare headlight bulb if you are planning to travel at night time. A spare spare plug can save your life in case the bike breaks down due to spark plug failure. * Carry a spare chain set, duct tape, epoxy, chain oil, fuses and a foot pump. * When it comes to clothes, carry only the essentials. Adequate thermals are necessary, especially if you are traveling to high altitude regions. * Among the rider essentials, carry some good quality shades which helps protecting your eyes from UV-rays and dust. Ensure they wrap around your eyes snugly. * Speaking of UV rays, they can be quite detrimental to your skin, especially at high altitudes. Carry a good quality sunscreen lotion. * Another important item to carry is a pair of extra sim cards, preferably BSNL post-paid ones. Also, carry a water bottle. Alternatively, you can also carry a hydration pack. * Keep a first aid kit and medicines like Diamox for AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Do not underestimate the effect of AMS! * Other essentials like protein bars, toilet papers, etc will also be very useful. Invest in good quality riding gear. Full face helmet with a proper riding jacket, riding pants, gauntlet type gloves, saddlebags and tank bag. Keep all the essentials (bike papers, identification papers, swiss army knife) in the tank bag. Carry everything else in the saddlebags. Make sure you distribute the weight equally and remember where your items are in the bag, so that you can keep it back to its place and your weight distribution does not get compromised. You can also carry a tow rope. Wind it and secure it on the crash bar. In case you are not sure of the directions or going to the place for the first time, then invest in a rugged GPS unit. Last but not the least, carry some hard cash, a power bank for your electronic gadgets, preferably a solar charger. Happy riding! Let me know if I have missed anything.
