Q.Yamaha developing YZF-R15 v3.0

[B]Yamaha Unveils R15 Version 3 in Indonesia:[/B] Yamaha's budget sports bike, the R15 has gone under the knife and has received a host of updates in both design and technology in its 'Version 3' guise. The new bike has been unveiled in Indonesia and the best part is, MotoGP legends Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales themselves rode the bikes on the stage. The bike gets a design overhaul and the overall angular sporty lines have been maintained. The headlamps now are smaller and are reminiscent of the ones in the legendary Ducati 916, especially when illuminated. The headlamps are full LED units and the tail lights follow suit as well. More importantly, the engine is now bigger, at 155 cc. The overbored engine is liquid cooled and fuel injected as usual. The engine now makes 2.3 PS more than the previous version. Power figures now stand at 19.3 PS at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. Transmission duties are taken care by the same six-speed gearbox but it now gets slipper clutch as well. Slipper clutch helps eliminate engine back-torque while downshifting aggressively- a valuable addition, especially for this track tamer. The new R15 also gets a front Up Side Down fork and a rear monoshock. The new USD fork, coupled with the reduced wheelbase make the bike even more agile. The saddle height has also been increased. The bike weighs a kilo more than the current generation R15 and it sports a 100 section tyre at the front and a fat 140 section at the rear. Sadly, the new R15 does not get ABS due to cost constraints. Expect the bike to be launched in India by the end of this year and the expected pricing is rather on the higher side, around INR 1.5 Lacs ex-showroom, to be precise. If this pricing is true, then I just hope the new R15 Version 3 does not end up like the R3 when it comes to sales figures.

The bike shown in the above post is apparently a one-off custom build for a customer. The bike was made by customizer called 'Elshop Modified' who also has bunch of custom parts like front cowl, rear view mirrors, fuel tank, engine cowl in store. A new version of the R15 has been spotted in an Indonesian dealership. It is unclear whether the bike is a limited edition or the version 3.0. The pulled-back headlamps remind me of the R3. The front forks, tyres and the exhaust look similar to the current gen R15, though. Now, we're not sure whether this particular bike is coming to India or not, but I feel Yamaha needs to do a lot more than just emission compliance and facelift. The next-gen R15 needs to be more powerful and more tech-laden if Yamaha wants to stay in the budget performance market here in India.

The Yamaha YZF-R15 was a game changer for Yamaha when it was launched. Enthusiasts took a liking to the R-15 thanks to peppy performance from its 150cc motor and built-to-last quality. Since then, the bike has become one of Yamaha’s bestseller.
