Petrol motor is suddenly making a comeback in India. With the recent diesel bans and stigma that diesel motor pollutes more than petrol, car manufacturers are slowly being driven to introducing more petrol motors. Following this trend, BMW in India has just launched the entry level petrol variant of its 5-Series, the 520i, at a price tag of Rs 54 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi). BMW had recently introduced the 320i petrol variant in its Indian line-up. The 520i is powered by the same 2.0 litre twin turbo motor seen in the 3-Series. This motor puts out a healthy 184 Ps and 270 Nm of torque. The car comes mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission. The top speed is rated at 233 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint just takes 7.9 seconds. The 520i will only be available now in the Luxury trim level. This trim level comes loaded with features. Just to name a few, Adaptive LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.2 inch touch interface with iDrive infotainment system, 600w Kardon audio system with 16 speakers, 3D maps, different driving modes and brake energy recuperation. The 520i will be a Completely Built-up Unit (CBU) unlike its diesel counterparts in India. This will take on the likes of the Mercedes E200 and the Audi A6 TFSI. Giving customers the choice of more petrol motors is definitely going to spice up this segment. Hopefully, BMW will start assembling these petrol variants in India soon and that will bring down the cost.
