And I'd be telling you to tank up at Shell on the way to Thane! ;)
Nikil | 8 years agoI can't imagine how crowded that little road would have been if we were there any later. We could've lost so much time trying to get out of those narrow lanes. Thank goodness luck was on our side throughout the trip and we didn't face any issues on this 5000km adventure.
Roshun | 8 years ago
Awesome travellogue! I'm surprised Agra doesn't have a bypass. You look like you've actually entered the core city/town. :(
A bypass is being built right now. The road is still under construction, so for the moment you have to go through Agra city to reach the Gwalior highway. We made one wrong turn - turning one road earlier than needed to head towards the Gwalior highway, which led us through a maze. But because it was so early in the morning, we got through easily enough.

Later, we crossed a bridge that looks like a scaled down version of the Howrah Bridge in Calcutta. Railway bridge ran above the bridge which made for an awesome sight. Scorpio ploughs through the track with ease. BR-V has done 379 kilometres so far (391 on the odd as Vidit drove it for 12 km in Noida before we set off) struggles and manages to scrape its underside. Later we hit another bad patch, continues on for 9 kilometres. We manage to break the the front bumper’s right side lower portion 9body cladding) while negotiating a huge ditch. I get down and get to do some spotting for one little section as well. BR-V suspension handles the beating pretty well. The rear is too light though and steps out al little overtime you give the throttle pedal a quick prod. As if this wasn’t enough to slow us down, we then hit a stretch that was under construction. Roshun says this bit has been under construction for the last 10 years. Soon, Roshun takes a sharp and very random right turn that turns out to be the Jhansi bypass heading towards Lalitpur (95 kilometres away).
We stop to assess the damage done to the Honda BR-V. Nikil | 8 years agoComing Soon: Details and pictures of the epic drive to Bangalore and back! Stay tuned :p Just got to edit some pictures is all.
Vidit | 8 years agoRains are back at it! On the Mumbai - Nashik Expressway, some great views and a LOT of speed bumps. 100 kms from Nashik Some of the really good scenery
Vidit | 8 years agoGetting into Mumbai, a slight diversion to meet HVKumar. Roshun, HVKumar and Vera. Posing with the two mile-munching Mahindras! The diesel from the Shell fuel bunk in Pune helped the Scorpio to reach a FE of over 16 kmpl! Simply incredible. The plan ahead. Important notes being jotted for the 1200 kms journey that lies ahead. In the background is the famous '5084', HVKumar 's reliable horse.
Vidit | 8 years agoThe Mahindra Scorpio S10 AWD has the much needed Cruise Control that NikilSJ and I sorely missed on the BR-V. Roshun engaged cruise control and enjoyed the expressway thoroughly.
Vidit | 8 years agoStarted from Pune early morning, photo taken at the Pune University bridge, while taking the exit onto Baner road Our friends in Pune were highly suggestive of the fact that fuel should be filled at one of the Shell fuel pumps in the city. And so thats what happened. From Baner, getting onto the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is a breeze.
Vidit | 8 years agoThe photo below is after crossing the ghat section, and going on Ajara-Nipani link road. As soon as you reach Nipani, the NH4 awaits you. It is one of the better highways of the country. Last pit stop before Pune, somewhere before Gandhinagar. The Black Fox has trot well so far.
Vidit | 8 years agoOne of the newest and best roads to drive on is the Amboli ghat section between Goa and Nipani, Maharashtra. Its a ghat section that you have to cross before getting on the straight highway to Pune, via Kohlapur. Crossing Savantwadi The Amboli ghat roads climb up to 700 ft from the sea level and has some great spots for some wallpapers :P
Vidit | 8 years agoStarted from Goa early morning with blessings from the rain gods The roads out of Goa are mostly 2 lane, with some great tarmac At the Goa-Maharashtra border
Vidit | 8 years agoFinally checked into a hotel in Colva around 4 30 pm. Rest for the night before heading out to Pune at 5 am
Vidit | 8 years agoSuccess! Goa border crossed at around 2 30 pm, way ahead of schedule! Some toll at the entrance Goan roads never disappoint. Here's a picture of Roshun enjoying the drive to Colva, the halt for the night.
Vidit | 8 years agoWhile crossing Mudeshwar Rains again, 130 kms from Goa. Development of roads in still underway at some stretches between Mangalore and Goa. The picture below has been taken near Kodsani
Vidit | 8 years agoMarvanti is heaven for any one who loves driving. The coast road comes right next to the ocean the drive becomes mesmerizing! The roads from Marvanti Beach onward to Goa are under development. Should be great once completed. The single transit road also meant that the maximum speed on this road reduced to a mere 45 kmph.
Vidit | 8 years agoAbout 3 and a half hours after leaving Coorg, crossed Kota, Karnataka. A small town near Kundapura. Being close to the coast, crossed a lot of inland water bodies as well. .. and lots of bridges as well The only downside to this picturesque route were the not so great roads. You'll be able to see the slightly broken tarmac in the picture below
Vidit | 8 years agoApparently, in the words of MotuSid, there is a lack of Udupi restaurants in Udupi along with some major construction on the main roads passing through the city. Flyover being made.
Vidit | 8 years ago
Quick coffee break for the Scorpio, about 20 kms from Udupi.
Vidit | 8 years agoThe best part about these road trips, is the opportunity to meet friends along the way who encourage you and motivate you to keep driving. Roshun and MotuSid met a friend in his Fiesta 1.6S in Mangalore. Heavy rains greeted the team as they passed through Mangalore
Vidit | 8 years agoThe roads from Coorg to Mangalore are really pretty, especially with monsoon just around the corner This picture was taken at a place 80 kms from Mangalore
Vidit | 8 years agoMeanwhile, as the BRV drove along, Roshun and MotuSid were well on their way towards Delhi from Coorg. They started on Wednesday morning, from a wet, cloudy Coorg onward to Goa for their first halt. Coorg to Goa is a distance of about 480 kms. Started from Coorg at 6 am, planned to reach Goa by 5:30 pm.
Vidit | 8 years agoWe took the Indore by-pass, onward towards Rajasthan. Its a good four-lane highway till Chittorgarh. Drove through the night and took a small halt near Ratlam to give the man and machine some much needed rest. At this point, we had been driving for more than 14 hours and the not so supportive captain seat on the BRV started taking a toll. Stop for breakfast on the highway The road from Chittorgarh to Ajmer turned out to be a fantastic 4-lane cemented expressway. We made some good time on this stretch. Soon we were on the NH8 towards Jaipur, and onto Delhi. 6 lanes of bliss! We hit Ajmer at about 11 am and took the bypass to get on to the Ajmer - Jaipur highway. This turned out to be 100 kms of dead straight road. The fuel levels were getting low and so hunger levels were rising. Decided to halt at this dhaba for our last meal stop before reaching Delhi After this, it was time to give the BRV some food too. Stopped at the next Reliance fuel pump. The fuel dispensers at these pumps are quite fancy. In case you are paying by card, the card has to be swiped in the dispenser before the fuel starts to flow. The little screen on the side (picture below) shows the dispensed amount and then gives you a computerized receipt as well. As I click these two photos, the manager of the pump ran upto me and asked me a thousand questions on why I was clicking theses pictures. He also went on to the extend of telling me to delete them immediately! Quite fishy.
Praveen | 8 years agoStarted the day at 10 am. Stayed at Chakan and drove onto Talegaon and then the Bombay Pune expressway From the expressway, went through Navi Mumbai towards NH4 and then onto NH3 towards Nashik Overcast skies throughout After some bad traffic for 50 kms, got great roads once we touched the Mumbai Nashik Expressway. Great scenery and awesome roads BRV proving to be great on the mileage and build frontier. Managed to get 17 and 18 kmpl respectively for the last 2 tanks At the Sula Vineyards for lunch Hexa spotted! 200 km from Indore Really missing cruise control on these empty stretches
Arpit | 8 years ago
Exterior design - It looks like a Mobilio with some 'tough-look' additions. Headlamps with LED pilot lamps and projectors look good. Diamond-cut look alloys look cool. Do not like the tail-lamps, the Mobilios tail-lamps would have looked better on this I guess. Interior design - Much better than the Mobilio, the dashboard and instrument cluster is the same as the Amaze though. Black upholstery with silver accents look nice. Comfort - Seats are okay for shorter rides, lack of lumbar support is a real problem. Spacious seats - front and second row, third is best reserved for kids. We folded the third row forward for more luggage space. Suspension is very well sorted - comfortable over bad roads. Engine - don't let the rpms go below 1000 and it rewards you with good acceleration. Sixth gear helps extract amazing mileage - was able to get over 20kmpl during ZigDrive VI. Steering - no feedback but light at low speeds and weighs up nicely at higher speeds. Handling - Car-like, sure-footed at high speeds, no body-roll during high-speed corners. Features - Not worthy of the price Honda commands for it.
Thanks Sid for your replying and nice feebback. I am having hard time in deciding between Creta and BR-V. I saw many negative comments about BR-V (mainly about missing features) but still I feel its a much practical car than Creata. I feel both BR-V and Creata are over priced to some extent.

Roshun | 8 years agoUpdate. 20:06:2016. 12.00 pm. The Scorpio 4WD and Honda BR-V parted ways in Bengaluru yesterday, after ZigDrive 6 (see thread for updates on the drive). I started out of Bengaluru at 5.30 pm yesterday and have come to Madikeri, Coorg, my hometown. Will be taking a 2 day break here and then heading back to Delhi via the coastal route. The plan: Madikeri to Mangalore to Canacona (Goa) to Pune to Chittorgarh (via Nashik) to Delhi. The team in the Honda BR-V has already started back to Delhi this morning and are now just Belagavi, entering Maharashtra shortly. The night halt planned for today with the team in the Honda BR-V is Pune. 4G Network availability is very poor across the route. We tried transmitting Facebook LIVE feeds to you folks, but the network barely caught 3G at times, and speeds were mainly 2G at best.

Roshun | 8 years agoKavinraj_Karupanna_Gounder_Subramanian I have the new Scorpio S10 4WD. And I also have a 2006 CRDe. Believe me when I say this. There's a world of a difference between the old and new in terms of suspension behaviour. The new one is really comfortable. I had cruise control set at 105 kmph for most of the route (speed limit is 100 kmph on most of the NH). I am most comfortable at that speed. The Honda BR-V has a sweet spot at about 100-110, and since it has six gears, it also revs a lot lower, and gives better mileage. I still prefer the high seating postion of the Scorpio and the ease with which it handles the odd speedbreaker or pothole. But I wish the Scorpio had a sixth gear. It would have made it so much better on the highway. So, to summarize, we did about 30 hours of driving time (15 + 15) on day one and two. 2,200 Km or so covered. (Will post exact logs in a bit). Got into Bangalore at 9pm after leaving Nagpur at 5 am on day 2, with steady driving all through. Great roads right up to Bangalore, except for a small stretch just after Nagpur and before Adilabad.
Kavinraj | 8 years agoIn which among the 2 vehicles,. you enjoyed the journey very much? In Scorpio, I've experienced handling is not too exciting, when driven more than 80 KMPH. Not sure if this is the same with everyone using a Scorpio.

Jijo | 8 years agoRoad Trip, Day 2. We set off even before the birds started chirping. Sight on Hyderabad - 385 km. City of biryani, hopefully we can grab a plate. Chai break and morning nature calls. 103km away from Nagpur. India's newest state, Telangana, 200kms away from Hyderabad though. We can almost smell the aroma! :) Putting the recently launched Honda BR-V through some serious testing. Hope it emerges with flying colours!
Praveen | 8 years agoThe scenery keeps getting better. Near Ganeshganj I think we could make it to Kanyakumari. What say? Powah! Roads in Maharashtra are being developed, speed has dropped significantly Good lights help gobble up roads faster Oyo in Nagpur, pad for the night
Rhythem | 8 years agoVery few vehicles for company on NH44. 80 kms away from Sagar. Smooth roads, cruise control used extensively on the Scorpio should have been offered on the BR-V too, people love driving on the wrong side, sultry weather outside, may start raining soon. Also tested the ABS thoroughly thanks to dumb cows on the road. Just entered Madhya Pradesh. Brilliant Road. Gunning down this road with an Hayabusa would be awesome! Let me guess, drunken driving? I guess the guy should have read THIS before he got into the truck. :p The BR-V gets the advantage to slipstreaming into Roshun 's Scorpio. 14 tyres on the truck, 112 tyres on the trailer. Near Kareli. Filling them up must be a pain! Average indicated efficiency of 19kmpl for the BR-V. Scorpio returning 13.9kmpl SuperMod Roshun is SuperHappy driving his Scorpio :D CorsaVeloce says Family Caven was an amazing Pit Stop.
Jijo | 8 years agoOkay, first casualty! The Scorpio's windshield got a chip from a flying stone. ☹ And here is Roshun giving an update on the journey, and its raining :)
Praveen | 8 years agoHere's a road map that shows the route covered by them: They've taken the Yamuna Expressway till Agra, then the road to Gwalior, bypassed Gwalior to Jhansi onto AH43, bypassed Jhansi and went onto NH26 and are now going to Lalitpur.
Praveen | 8 years agoThe shades are on and he means business. Although, could he be smiling? On board systems report on average kmpl. Roshun , isn't 13.8 kmpl on the highways at 80 kmph a little less?
Jijo | 8 years agoThe roads have opened up now. Woo! The best fake smiles CorsaVeloce and NikilSJ could come up with. Roshun and CorsaVeloce cleaning the windshields for better photos! Both the cars are, again on the NH26, after we cleaned the windshields. All set to go. Heading into the unknown, at least that is what the Scorpio's MapMyIndia system is telling us. Currently on NH26, just passed Bangay. More updates soon...
Jijo | 8 years agoShots from the epic cross country run, as Roshun mentioned, the convoy started of at 4.45 am from Noida. Destination - Bangalore. Images- MotuSid The sun was just over the horizon, trying to get a peek of the world as a few distantly placed cars tried to make their way through the Yamuna Expressway. Crowded roads of Agra, array of colours, the air is chaotic here. An abandoned fort after Gwalior, Ghalib, I thought. New bridge between Dabra and Datia. It is 40 degrees outside, A/C is powerful and the ride very compliant. Dead bugs on windshield. Lot of high tension wires for company. They look like people. Black Fox crosses another milestone. 9000kms on the Jhansi bypass. Many more to follow...
Roshun | 8 years agoUpdate at 8.00 am. We left Noida at 4.45 am. Got to Agra at 6.40 am. Now on a tea break at Dholpur. Gwalior is 40 km from here. Met a fellow traveler from the HVK Group (Allen) just after Agra.
Motu | 8 years agoGood Morning everyone!
Motu | 8 years ago
The question im hoping to answer at the end of this trip is whether the BRV is an SUV or a station wagon.
You don't have to wait that long. In fact I can tell you exactly what it is right now - it is an elongated hatchback which is slightly raised and rides on stiffer springs. There, now what else do you want to know?
Jijo | 8 years agoRoshun MotuSid NikilSJ CorsaVeloce This would be one epic cross country run. Will surely miss this, the monsoons and the Zigdrive to Avalabetta :( Safe drive comrades!
Vidit | 8 years agoIm excited like a 10 year old for this. Really wanna see what the Honda is made of. The question im hoping to answer at the end of this trip is whether the BRV is an SUV or a station wagon. We shall find out.
Roshun | 8 years agoI guess you know we are having a ZigDrive in Bengaluru on June 19th for all the ZigWheels Forum members and friends in Bengaluru. See this LINK for more details on that drive. While we were planning the logistics for that drive CorsaVeloce, MotuSid and NikilSJ wanted to attend it too. And we also thought we would take one of the latest SUVs on Indian roads along with an old favourite to go and attend this ZigDrive. Thus, was hatched the plan to take a Honda BR-V VX i-DTEC and my Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD on an epic road trip of 4,500 km from Delhi to Bengaluru and back. (I will be taking a different route back, on which I shall update later) Watch this space as we take advice from HVKumar for the route and set off for Bengaluru on Thursday, June 16. We will keep posting route photos and updates here, networks permitting that is. Hmm, that also gives us an opportunity to check out Airtel's 4G service across the country! Catch us on the ZigWheels Facebook page as well. I will post Facebook LIVE updates from time to time. The travellers: Roshun, NikilSJ, MotuSid and CorsaVeloce The vehicles: The proposed route:
