Volkswagen, world’s largest car manufacturer has announced its future plans of limiting the number of platforms to just 4. Currently Volkswagen group uses 12 platforms on which their entire portfolio of cars are built upon. Volkswagen group consists of passenger vehicle brands like Skoda, Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Bentley, Porsche, Bugatti and Lamborghini. Following the new vision for its future, Volkswagen made this announcement as a part of its ‘Strategy-2025.’ The platform suggested are for small cars (MHB), medium cars (MQB), premium cars (MLB) and the final one will be kept aside for sports cars (code name not revealed yet). It helps reduce the model development time by a year save substantially on costs (will be reduced between 25-40 per cent) while doing so, as majority of the components will be shared across the models based on the same platform. This will in turn help Volkswagen double its production volume by 2018. More focus on Asian markets was made evident when the Volkswagen shared details regarding the development of “budget car” plan. Looks like Volkswagen is going all out to recover its lost brand value and revenues after the forgettable "dieselgate" scandal. Volkswagen had earlier announced that it would phase out as many as 40 models in the future, and replace it by electric vehicle. Volkswagen will be investing heavily into the development of electric and autonomous vehicles to became a leader in the green transport revolution. Volkswagen will also focus on popular segments like SUVs and crossovers, which are witnessing high demand across the globe.
