kaiserketkar I really don't think there will be any difference to the air quality levels by this move if other measures are not put in place. This was just a soft target, just as a SIAM release also says. See this thread: Air Pollution - The Sad State of Delhi
It is a lobbying powered move, but it is not Volkswagen that has been doing the lobbying for sure. The move to ban diesel, in my opinion, is because of genuine environmental concerns. And now that the spotlight is on Delhi, environmental lobbyists have got more headway in cracking down on diesel. The reason luxury cars are the first target is because the collateral fallout is minimal. And actually, even the impact may be minimal, sorry to say.
Out of an annual 2.5-3 lac new registrations in NCR, only about 35-40k vehicles are diesel >2000cc. [Apr14-Mar15 figures] That's barely 15%. Mind you this is just the data for cars. Add commercial vehicles and two wheelers to the mix, and the percentage would go down even further- in single digits. Will it make a difference? Doubt it. Like Roshun says, this is the easy way out.
