Ather Energy, the Bangalore-based company, that has just started making electric scooters, will receive a Rs. 205 crore investment from Hero MotoCorp for a 26% to 30% stake in the company. The initial investment will be about Rs. 180 crore and the rest will be given as and when required. Last year, Ather Energy received $12 million in investment from Tiger Global, which was used to develop its first scooter - the S340 (in the photo below). The S340 is in its final stage of testing. The S340 electric scooter comes with a 3KW electric motor and a 40AH battery pack (hence the name). It is powered by a lithium-ion battery, with a life of about 50,000 km. The scooter claims to be about 20% lighter than other 110cc scooters in the market, which helps contribute to better range and efficiency. The Ather S340 can touch a top speed of 75 kmph and go from 0-60 kmph in 11 seconds. It also boasts of a very quick charging time of just 1.5 hours for a full charge. It can get up to 80% charge in just 50 minutes with a fast charger. It takes 2.5 units of electricity for a full charge (so that's about Rs 15 worth of power for a range of 75km). That amounts to a very low running cost of just Rs. 0.20 per km! This investment will help get more scooters out the door, now that the prototypes are being tested. Ather Energy was initially backed by FlipKart as well. With more electric scooters and cars being developed by different companies, the future is indeed electric. I think these scooters will lead the electric brigade initially, before large scale adoption takes place. hanifchamadiya@yahoo.com You can check out Hero Electric's Photon. It has got a 1000 W (1500 W-Peak) electric motor and VRLA battery with 33AH/48V capacity. The range in economy mode is 80 km per full charge and 50 km in power mode. The scooter also comes with a front disc brake, phone charging socket, front telescopic forks and an anti theft alarm. The top speed is 45 kph. The price is Rs. 48,490 (ex-showroom, Delhi). I think it is safer to go for Hero electric as it is an established brand with a major market share in the electric segment.
