I would keep staring at it the whole day out of my classroom's window. It was maroon initially. Then he overhauled the bike completely and changed the colour to silver. Grew up with these two-strokes around me. So rare to see one on the roads these days though.

The BMW Funduro was launched in the year 1997, a time too early for premium bikes. This beaut was equipped with a liquid cooled 652 cc engine mated to a five-speed transmission! Had they brought the bike now, it would have been a formidable competitor to Triumph Tiger and Versys 650. Funduro's adventure-tourer design, under-seat exhaust and ample suspension travel would have made it the perfect tourer for India! We've been seeing these Enfields look almost the same for decades now. It is only enthusiasts like us that do remember the Jawas and BMWs of yore. The newer generation, especially the millenials, I feel has lost out on so much heritage and history. For all we know, they might create a thread in the future called "What makes a Pulsar so legendary?" Another reason for this phenomenon is the vast history of the brand and how it was acquired by Madras Motorcycles and became an household name. Also, how could anyone forget those pictures from the old days of milk men carrying doldrums and jawans on the battlefield with these machines. These images will always stay with us no matter what. Kinda like John Abraham and the Hayabusa really :p

In my opinion, what makes the Royal Enfield unique is the cult following and the community that Royal Enfield has built over the years. I think RE is one of the first motorcycle brands in India to encourage 'riding' rather than 'commuting' and I feel all of their products exude the charm and the pleasure of riding. When I was a kid, I was never a fan of Royal Enfield. I kept wondering what makes people go gaga over something that is underpowered and out-dated! As the years went by, even I was smitten by it, particularly the Thunderbird! It is just the feeling of pride that comes along with the motorcycle. Royal Enfields don't conform to the traditional two wheeler or a commuter segment. A Royal Enfield is a Royal Enfield and there is no replacing it. Sure, a lot of competitors have emerged in the last few years and every single rival offers something interesting and unique. But despite all that, if a person wants to go for an RE, he will go for it, no matter how tempting the competition is! That's how established the Brand is. And the most interesting part is that they have managed to do this primarily by word of mouth! No fancy adverts! I think that is what makes a Royal Enfield legendary and unique.

What makes the Royal Enfield Bullet extremely popular is the image that comes with it, and how planted the bike feels at descent speeds. I think part of what makes Royal Enfield's unique and 'legendary' is the fact that the basic design has not changed since the 1950s. The character of the bike has remained the same, and for the longest time, even the engine block was more or less the same. It's only in the past decade that technological advancements have been made on it. Yet, these bikes have the same character.
