The festive season may be all about joy and happiness but, on the road, we face lots of dangers such as manjakite strings, fire-crackers, water colour bombs and whatnot. So, this thread is dedicated to the discussion of all these incidents and ways to avoid them. Manja- related Incidents: Recently, a stray manja rope caught my neck as I was riding in my neighbourhood. Luckily, I wasn’t going that fast and had plenty of reaction time to know what happened. I immediately slowed down, pulled over and took it off my neck before it went taut. You can never see these kinds of things coming. After reading about so many incidents of manja ropes causing throat slits and people bleeding to death, I just realised that humanity isn’t built to last. We would rather see a couple of paper aircraft duel it out than bother about the dangers to actual human lives by using manja. Flying kites using cotton threads is not illegal, but using manja is. However, that’s not going to stop people from using manja. But we can take a few steps to avoid getting hurt because of other’s stupidity. * If you spot a stray manja rope, wind it up slowly and burn it. Be careful as you may cut yourself. Burning is the only way to dispose these things. Throwing it in the garbage bin means causing probable harm to scavengers. This may include humans, animals and birds * I did a little research on the internet and came to know about this simple device that can potentially help you avoid dying a bloody death because of manja. I am not sure about the efficacy of this thing but it is definitely worth a try, I guess. One can fabricate a thin curved steel or iron ‘arch’. One end of it is attached to the handlebar clamp and the other end is attached to the rear grab-rail. This arch basically goes over the rider so that the arch takes the impact of the rogue rope and deflects it above your head, thus preventing neck injuries. It will look horrible but if you’re riding in an area where injuries due to manja related injuries happen, then this simple set-up might save your life! This was devised by a man in Rajasthan who lost his son in a manja-related accident. Check this news video about the invention: * Another alternative is having a windshield. It will also help you deflect the rope off. It works best with the combination of wind-shield and a full face helmet. * An important point to note- While riding, wear a full face helmet at all times! I can’t stress this point further. Wearing riding gloves and jackets are always safer. Cover your neck with a buff. It can cushion the impact of the string. * If you’re driving a car, do not ever let people stick their heads/ bodies out of the sunroof. Recently, a little kid bled to death when a string of manja got caught in her neck while she was enjoying the view through the sunroof. The news came up on TV and it’s messed up that an innocent kid had to die like this. Please prioritise safety. If you have experienced something like this and if you want to share any other alternative solutions to hazards faced by road users during various festivities, do share on this thread.
