Q.Renault Kwid 1.0 litre is Finally Here!
406 Views Add Comment23 CommentsJijo | 8 years agoCNB test drove the Renault Kwid with a 1,000cc engine. It gets more power and torque than its 800cc sibling. How does it feel to drive? Will the Kwid 1.0 litre further eat into the sales figures of Maruti cars like Celerio and Wagon-R? Check out this review.
Jijo | 8 years agoNikilSJ On that note, In an interview with ET Auto, Mr Sumit Sawhney, CEO of Renault India states that around 1,25,000 Renault Kwids will be on the road by the end of this year. So far, they’ve sold 75,000 units of the Kwid since its launch in September 2015. This number is going to increase considerably with Renault introducing the 1.0 litre and AMT (at a later stage) variants.
Nikil | 8 years agoMotuSid it may not have so much of an impact on the Maruti 800 K10 AMT. But at least now people who don't want a Maruti but need an AMT have an option. I think the more adventurous sort of buyer looking for a vehicle with an AMT will go for the Kwid as it has got some more features than the Alto K10. I just can't wait to see how peppy the new 1.0-litre Kwid is. That power-to-weight ratio is something no other car in the segment can boast of. If only they had given it a sporty kit like the Kwid Racer Concept from the Auto Expo and sold it as a performance hatchback!
Arjun | 8 years agoMotuSid We cannot deny that Kwid has given good competition to the Alto. The Alto still sells large numbers, but if you compare the Year on year sale difference , compared to last year Maruti has sold 10% lesser Altos this year in the month of July. From 22-23000, the numbers have fallen to <20000. And I believe the Alto K10 was an important factor here. Till now the Alto K10's price was comparable to the Kwid's. For people who wanted more power the Alto K10 made more sense. The AMT is also a good selling point. However, the Kwid has now got the 1.0 engine and soon will be getting the AMT too. Its true that budget is an important factor, but we must also understand that Indians are ready to spend more if they get value for it. In the small car segment, value is not seen in terms of safety features, but with after sales, gizmos and utility. In terms of utility the Kwid delivers. Its bigger, more spacious and loaded with more features as compared to the Kwid. It may be priced higher, but they are giving all value for the price. Renault has also been working hard to increase it reach by adding more and more dealers in smaller cities. Taking into consideration, all these things, I can see the market for Kwid growing. The impact on the Alto may not be immediate, but unless they refresh it with a major facelift and features, they may slowly lose out more to the new Kwid in the block.
Motu | 8 years ago
"Originally posted by JijoMalayil" Reports reveal that Renault is planning to offer AMT with both Kwid variants (0.8 & 1 litre).
I don't think adding the AMT to the Kwid 1.0L would worry Maruti, the Alto K10 with AMT would undercut the Kwid 1.0L AMT - just like all the other variants of the Alto K10. It would have more of an impact on the Alto 800 though - none of the Alto 800 variants are being offered with AMT right now - Renault may have a first mover advantage. What worries me though, is that Maruti can easily add an AMT to any of the variants of the Alto 800 and still undercut the Kwid in terms of price. While many of us are raving on about how Renault should be commended on giving more for less - the prices show that they are not actually doing that. If push comes to shove - Maruti could offer a good touch-screen based multimedia system on the Alto 800 and Alto K10 and steal the thunder from the Kwid. But I guess they wouldn't have to that - 'the less money spent, the better' attitude of customers in this segment will make sure Maruti always sells more Altos.
That's awesome news. This move will improve sales of the Kwid by two fold for sure.I hope Renault is prepared with enough AMT kits.otherwise with the current demand, the waiting period would pile up every day. On another note,The current shift towards automatics makes me worry.I dont want the next generation to miss out on the fun that can be had in a manual

Nikil | 8 years agoYes JOY MRC. It is high time the government makes safety equipment like airbags and ABS mandatory on all cars.Hpefully, this should change once the new crash safety norms come into place from October 2018. The road transport ministry has said they will ask all car makers to offer airbags and ABS as standard on all variants. They say that providing these features will only increase the cost of the car by 10%. That does not seem much at all when you think about how uch more safer your car will be with all these safety equipments. But more importantly, it is high time the government and officials do something to sensitize people about the benefits of having these safety features especially to someone looking at buying a brand new car.
JOY | 8 years agoJijoMalayil That comparison chart really does wonders in giving out the advantages of the Kwid over the competition. Considering the top end variants of all three, we are getting so much more with the Kwid (even if the price is introductory) than with the Alto and the Eon.The base variant pricing is the key for the Alto K10 along with the AMT on other trims while the Eon kind of loses out to the competition at this point. The company's genuine customisation kits from the dealer-level is quite extensive and unique to the Kwid as well. I still beleive a simple 1.0L monogram would have been better than those hideous stickers and silver mirror covers. The Kwid seems to have it all to make it big in this segment. For just 22k more everyone is going to make a leap to the 1.0 model. I also feel bad that people aren't choosing the safety pack when they have an option. Maybe the entry level buyers aren't used to these till date and have a pre-judgement that these won't be necessary for their kind of driving. Afterall, we still have people using safety helmets and buckets instead of proper riding helmets. The only solutions is to make them standard fitment as it will add only a few thousand rupees to the cars cost. We must make it a mandatory feature like seatbelts. So we aon't be able to choose not to have it, the car maker gets more money and people are safer. Everyone's happy.
Jijo | 8 years agoLet's see how the Renault Kwid 1.0 SCe fare against its rivals, the Hyundai Eon 1.0 litre and Maruti Alto K10. Nikil | 8 years ago
CorsaVeloce Having more power comes with more responsibility. Kwid being built on an already lighter platform would obviously have more power-to-weight ratio. But with more power in hand, Renault must have given atleast ABS as an option. Its a seriously missed opportunity and would hurt those who were looking for a safe and practical budget hatchback. Talking about airbags, it doesn't matter to the buyers of this segment. We have fine example of the Alto 800 being offered with airbags at just Rs 6,000 inflated price but still how much airbags variant contribute to total sales, merely 5%. ABS should be the must have feature in the Kwid. Easy-R AMT would be as same as others in the market. This ZF-sourced AMT feels a bit more jerky than Magnetti Marelli sourced AMT as experienced by few owners.
A recent report I read said that only one in 20 Alto buyers prefer to tick the Airbag option. Except for Renault and the missed opportunity, I think we should stop berating other carmakers for not giving safety features to customers. Maruti gave customers the option and now look how many of them actually get them. I think the only way forward is to start an initiative to educate people on the importance of these safety features and how it helps save lives instead of blaming carmakers for being very stingy with their safety features. I feel airbags on the Kwid are a must especially after the seeing this video of how it performed in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The whole body crumples under impact and I don't think there will be anything to scoop out after such kind of an impact. Somehow, the variant with the airbags did much better. The body seems more solidly put together for some reason. I wonder how?
Roshun | 8 years ago
Prices: Renault Kwid 1.0 SCe vs Maruti Alto K10 (lakhs, ex-showroom, New Delhi) Kwid 1.0 RXT: Rs 3.83 Kwid 1.0 RXT(O): Rs 3.96 Alto K10 Vxi: Rs 3.62 Alto K10 Vxi(O): Rs 3.82
The Renault Kwid 1.0 really seems quite compelling now in this segment. While the 800 cc Kwid did manage to make some headway into the Alto 800's market, the Kwid 1.0 will take away some of the Maruti Alto K10's market share. If you look at the buyer profile of the Renault Kwid, it is mainly younger people who are buying it. The average age is under 35. This shows that this audience is willing to look beyond 'safe bets' like the Maruti brand or Hyundai brand and get a little more adventurous, which is working in Renault's favour. The pricing of the Kwid 1.0, in my opinion, is spot on. If you look at a direct comparison with the Alto K10 - the Kwid offers better power to weight ratio, slightly more seating space, more equipment (in terms of a touch-screen infotainment system with GPS), much larger boot (300 litres vs only 177 litres for the Alto K10), better ground clearance and that SUV-like look that its audience seems to love. The price difference top-end to top-end is only Rs. 16,000 (the Alto K10 is cheaper). However, one big advantage that the Alto K10 has right now is that it offers an automated manual transmission (AMT) which is again about Rs. 15,000 only more than the Kwid. (Alto K10 AMT Vxi is Rs. 4.11 lakh ex-showroom). An automatic car at that price point is quite a draw. Renault is planning to offer the Easy-R (AMT) transmission on the Kwid, but we don't really know when that car will come out. I suppose if it sees a sizeable enough market for it, Renault may bring it in. That would be priced about Rs. 40,000 more than the regular variant (the price difference between the manual and AMT Alto K10 is also about the same).

Nikil | 8 years agoCorsaVeloce seems like Renault is so full of confidence now. They are comparing the Renault Kwid to the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Hyundai Elite i20. Both cars cost way more than the Kwid 1.0. You could probably buy a Kwid and a half with the money you'd spend buying the Elite i20. With 97PS per ton, I think the new Kwid 1.0 will be a car to watch out for the road. Expecting it to be a fast and capable handler as well. If it was up to me, I would reduce the height of the Kwid hoping it'll make it a better handler. Waiting to get my hands on one to see how well it poerforms.

Jijo | 8 years agoKwid 1.0 SCe is finally out. Guess the hike in prices - 22 thousand! How does Renault do this man?
Nikil | 8 years agoYes, this seems like a missed oppurtunuity for Renault like JOY MRC and Arjun said. The absence of passenger-side airbag is a serious omission. If they had given a 'Safety Pack' then other manufacturers especially Maruti Suzuki too would have been forced to offer airbags and ABS as an option. I don't mind the looks of the Kwid 1.0 though. The silver finish on the mirrors seem cheap, yes. But it sort of reminds me of the silver finish that Ranult used to offer on sportier variants of their hatchbacks like the Clio Sport or the Renault Twingo. The 1.0-litre engine should definitely give the Kwid the poke it always needed. However, I am very sceptical about the AMT gearbox that will be introduced in the coming months. I really hope that it is not as jerky as the AMT boxes on Maruti cars. With the addition of this variant, I have no doubts that the Kwid can climb in to the top 5 slot from the current 8th position that it held in June 2016. Hope we can get our hands on one soon for a detailed review.

Jijo | 8 years agoJOY MRC Yeah, those silver dipped mirrors are plain ugly. A neat 1.0 litre variant tag at the rear or a sport badge would have added a sense of exclusivity! If Renault had provided a safety pack, the Kwid 1.0 litre could have easily rivaled Tata Tiago in the price range.
JOY | 8 years agoJijoMalayil I really hate this matte silver finish on the mirrors. I've seen it in the Duster before and my feeling was same (the cheif designer must have went for a vacation after the success of the Kwid was announced leaving the usual folks at Renault to do the tinkering work for the 1.0L model :D ). I mean look at those graphics. The SUV-ish looks of the car is spoiled by that alone and no other visual difference from the 800cc model makes the common man think twice before investing more money. The Alto800 and Alto K10 has done it the right way as people instantly will know what they are getting more for the money for paying extra than the engine. Missing passenger-side Airbag and ABS even as an option is also sad. They could have been the first to bring it to the segment as others would have followed the trend soon enough. But even so, sales will get only better as there are a lot of customers postponing their Kwid purchase as the older variant lacked the punch. I think they could have made it better and more appealing as the demand is so high right now. Seems like a missed opportunity.
Arjun | 8 years agoJijoMalayil The non inclusion of passenger side airbags and ABS is sad. The reason maybe due to low demand or the non availability of these features in the competition. As it has already been seen that in the segment, most don't want to pay extra for safety features. Even for the higher segment cars in Maruti which is giving optional safety pack, there was a recent report that majority of the customers still go for variants without the option pack. There were also reports in other forums that customers are dissuaded from taking the optional safety packs by the sales advisors quoting much longer wait times for such options. Renault bringing in the safety pack could have forced the whole segment to move to optional safety packs and also for Maruti to reduce the wait time for cars with safety features to avoid losing customers. Its ironic that Renault tried to play safe here by not giving any safety features, but going by the way they had taken the NCAP crash results seriously and worked on improving it, we can hope that they may launch the safety packs with the AMT later.
Jijo | 8 years agoUpdate (22 August, 2016): Renault Kwid 1.0 litre variants launched at prices ranging between Rs 3.83 lakhs and Rs. 3.96 lakh Renault Kwid RXT: Rs. 3.83 lakh Renault Kwid RXT (Option): Rs. 3.96 lakh Jump to this POST for more details --- One of the largest selling cars in India, the Renault Kwid, is all set to get a more powerful 1.0-litre variant on Monday, the 22nd of August. After gathering more than 75,000 for its regular 800cc variant, the new 1.0 litre variant will ensure that those numbers keep increasing in the time to come. The Kwid’s 1.0L engine delivers 68 PS power and returns a mileage of 23.01 kmpl (the 800 cc Kwid delivers 54 PS and 25.17 kmpl). The 1.0 litre variant will get a best in class power to weight ratio of 97 PS /ton.The Kwid 1.0 litre will be paired to the same 5-speed manual gearbox for now and the Easy-R AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). For now, Renault India will only offer the Kwid 1.0 Liter with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the AMT variant is expected to be launched later this year. Unlike previously thought, Renault is not offering a passenger side airbag or ABS, even as an option with the 1.0-litre variant. Dimension, interiors, exteriors (except body graphics and a set of silver-finished mirrors) and features list remain same as that of the cheaper 800cc Kwid. The Kwid 1.0-litre will rival the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, Hyundai Eon 1.0-litre and Tata Tiago petrol in India. Since it is available in the top-spec variants (RXT and the RXT (O) variants) only. Expect prices to hover between Rs 4.0 lakh and Rs 4.3 lakh (ex-showroom). Will the Kwid 1.0 find enough takers in India. Bookings are already underway (unofficially) across dealerships and you can officially book one from the 22nd of August. You can book one by paying anything between Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000. Here is Abhay's take on the same.
