More electronics! That's the last thing I need. While this system of replacing lost electrons could theoretically prevent rusting (preventing Fe reaction with O2), I am not really sure this would work in the long term. Plus it is dependent on the battery isn't it? I think physical coatings and paint have worked well for decades, and that should probably be enough.

Roshun So I came across something called Electronic Rust Prevention System. It is basically a system which prevents the oxidation of metal by replacing the lost electrons through capacitive couplers, and thereby slowing down the process of rust formation. The circuit is a closed loop one which alerts via LEDs if anything goes wrong with the circuit. The generator shuts down and when the issue is sorted, it switches on again. I am not sure about the efficacy or reliability of this thing but is pretty interesting nonetheless. Will it make sense for Indian conditions? There is a raging debate on about the real benefits of various coatings offered by companies. However, in my experience, I have only seen positive results with such coatings and they do help prolong the life of your vehicle. I had an underbody anti-rust treatment on a few of my previous cars and they have all survived the changing seasons over the years without any issues. Hence, I decided that I will get as much protection as needed on Black Fox, my Nov. 2015 Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. Now, maintaining a black car is quite a chore as most would know. Regular polishing, washing only with a microfibre towel and such is needed to keep the body scratch free. After the recent monsoons and my various cross country drives (See: 4500 km in a Mahindra Scorpio and Honda BR-V and HVK Monsoon Drive North 2016) the underside of the vehicle was caked in layers of mud. All vehicles come with some degree of underbody protection - usually a thin film of paint or anti-rust treatment from the factory. But this wears off over time. Now 3M has this underbody coating that is pretty thick and comes with a five-year warranty. That's something I needed. I headed across to 3M Car Care on MG Road, Sultanpur, New Delhi on Sunday, after a quick underbody wash at a local garage for this. The attention to detail that the 3M guys put into every vehicle is such a pleasure to witness. It's really like a team of surgeons attending to the vehicle and pampering it. Plus, they have their safety equipment on at all times - face masks and head/hair protection, which makes them look like surgeons. The Scorpio was hoisted on a scissor lift and the underbody inspected. The 3M guys shook their heads in disgust at the poor quality of washing done by a local garage and straight away went about cleaning the underbody themselves. After the underbody was scrubbed clean, the silencer and other critical components were wrapped in protective masking film as the underbody coating should not get on these parts. The technician proceeded to spray the black underbody coating evenly on all exposed metal areas. Then it was the turn of the exhaust to be protected with a zinc-coating. This reduces the chances of holes / rust appearing in the exhaust system. Engine cleaning, degreasing and detailing: A benefit of this underbody coating, is that there is a very small degree of reduction in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels in the car as well, besides the fact that it is uniformly black underneath and is protected for at least five years against any kind of corrosion. After the underbody protection was done, I got the engine bay cleaned and degreased professionally, and then it was time to buff the body with polish - UV protection as 3M calls it. I have a package deal with 3M running, which also includes paint protection and car washes - these are available as annual packages for about 12K. This washing, underbody treatment, UV protection, engine cleaning, vacuum cleaning and silencer coating came to a shade over Rs. 6k, which is well worth the money. Black Fox is a happy fox for now.
