It was my first time karting (basically driving with four wheels, fast) and boy what an amazing experience! The track was fairly easy. Sure, as a first timer, I did ram the tyre barriers a couple of times, but I think I could've posted better timing if I had another go. The KnK Trailblazer karts are pretty quick, especially since Rohit had opened up the throttles since there were professionals in the fray. Here are some of the unedited pictures from ZigDrive 8, possibly the best one we've had till date. Members flowed in from all corners of Delhi-NCR to have a spot of fun in these amazing karts built by [URL="http://knkkarts.com/"]KNK Karts[/URL] in Karnataka. These carts wore knobby tyres to take on the dirt and what fun we had drifting these little four-stroke machines. The day started off with a briefing by Rohit Khanna who races Formula LGBs and is associated with JK Tyre Motorsport too. He briefed us on the track layout and also told us what each flag meant. Rohit said that the track's surface changes after every lap and that it was very important for us to find the grippier part of the track if we wanted to set some fast laps. Briefing done, we told to gear up and wait for our turns. The participants went five at a time trying to set the fastest time. The top 10 fastest times would go on to earn a spot in the finals. [USER="2491"]Zeus4x4[/USER] was part of the batch that went out on the track. This session was filled with so many people crashing into the tyre barrier as they were getting used to the layout and the track surface. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18557[/ATTACH] Participants were saying that the karts were understeering when they let go of the throttle mid-corner. Here's a picture of one of the first crashes that happened. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18558[/ATTACH] Although the participants who had turned up consisted of karting champions, rally drivers and guys who go for regular track days, everybody agreed that the karts were fast enough for the condition and had a blast wringing the life out of them. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18559[/ATTACH] These karts are the Trailblazer created by KNK Karts. They feature a Honda GSX200 engine with the fuel tank mounted on the engine. A ground clearance of 100mm ensured that the karts didn't bog down on loose mud. The karts came with knobby 15x6 6-inch tyres which provided ample grip. What's more - all the karts had functional seatbelts! Steering the karts were a tricky affair as you had to feel the kart gripping the surface and then turn. Turning the kart before you find grip will only make it understeer and crash into the tyre wall. The 'A' pedal had enough travel to modulate throttle input. Some of the corners required one to turn real hard coupled with some serious opposite lock. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18560[/ATTACH] [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18561[/ATTACH] After the first three sessions were done, all the participants took a break to have breakfast while the crew worked hard to level out the surface again. The roller was strapped on to the Corolla which was driven around the track by Rohit. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18562[/ATTACH] The other crew members started covering up the ruts by then. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18563[/ATTACH] Here's our very own Stig Mr [USER="42"]CorsaVeloce[/USER] who is also a former national karting champion and Polo Cup racer going off the track at Turn 3. He went off one more time after this and was given a warning by Rohit. Luckily, the others in his session too were having a tough time with their karts and the whole session was restarted. He managed to qualify for the finals and made sure at least one of the moderators were there in the final. Later, [USER="6"]Roshun[/USER] too managed to squeeze into the top 10 and qualify while I did a lap 20 second slower to him and managed to finish 13th and not qualify for the finals. Boo hoo :( [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18564[/ATTACH] [USER="46"]Speedzilla[/USER] and [USER="42"]CorsaVeloce[/USER] fighting out for glory. The latter managed to set the fastest time in qualifying (2min 08 seconds)! It was so much fun seeing Karan attack the track with everything he had. He was going sideways in almost every corner. Later, when I took my place on the grid, these two came rushing to me and told me what lines to take and what to avoid. It was one of the better spent Saturdays. Managed to get mud and sand everywhere, but totally worth it. I had never driven a kart on loose surface before and man, it is kinda tricky. I managed to go into the tire walls on turn 3, twice! On the out lap and the next. After I was given a last warning by Rohit along with some much needed tips, I finally got the hang of it. Here is the layout of the track. It is about 350-360 metres long, but with pretty sharp corners. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18164[/ATTACH] There will be up to five Karts running at a time on the track. All the laps will be timed laps. The 200cc, Honda-powered KnK Trailblazer karts put out 7PS of power. One can drive almost flat out on this mud track, with turns 3, 4, 5 requiring moderate drifts. Turns 9 and 10 are great to power slide into and out of. Turn 11 is a tricky one (at least for me). It requires a fast drift as the turn is pretty tight, and just turning the kart doesn't ensure a proper turn. So ready for some action this Saturday? Helmets will be provided, but if you want you can bring your own helmets. There will be registration and a safety briefing before the start of the event at 9am.
