The Grand i10 automatic uses a traditional 4 speed automatic gearbox which is a torque converter type. It offers smoother gear shifts when compared to the jerky action of the Celerio and Wagon R's AMT(Automated manual Transmission) gearbox but at the cost of fuel efficiency. It boasts of better fuel efficiency than a traditional automatic and even the same manual gearbox which it is based upon. but the problem is that it is very jerky while shifting and a bit numb when driven at a faster pace. This is where the Nissan Micra makes more sense. It uses a CVT gearbox which is smoother than the AMT yet fuel efficient than the torque converter. The price cut makes it excellent value for money as well. The Wagon-R is an AMT (automated manual transmission), which means it is almost similar to the manual with the same 5-speed gearbox, except that it has no clutch pedal and gear shifting takes place automatically, by means of electronic motors. The Hyundai Grandi i10 has a proper torque converter automatic transmission - a 4-speed one. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Wagon-R is much better. The Grand i10 will be smoother though, with fewer jerks from the transmission. If you had to pick between these two, I would suggest the Maruti Wagon-R AMT, as maintenance is easier and fuel efficiency is much better. In the same segment you also have the Honda Brio automatic (5-speed torque converter) and the Maruti Celerio AMT - which is slightly better than the Wagon-R in terms of features. Then there is the Nissan Micra CVT - an underrated car. It is very smooth to drive and gives decent fuel efficiency, as CVT boxes have a very large number of gear ratios, ideally matched to engine speeds. The Micra is a bit more expensive than the other two though.
