Renault India has just launched the latest variant of the Kwid - the Renault Kwid 1.0 AMT. This car comes with an automated manual transmission. It does not have a conventional gear shift inside, but forward and reverse is controlled by means of a dial as seen in this image. The Kwid AMT is priced at Rs. 4.25 lakh, which makes it one of the least priced automatic hatchbacks you can get in India, besides the Tata Nano AMT and Maruti Alto K10 AMT. The Kwid AMT is powered by a 1-litre three-cylinder engine that puts out 68PS of power and 91Nm of torque. It has only two pedals, as an AMT eliminates the need for a clutch or a gear shift. The Kwid makes do with a knob that can select between forward, neutral and reverse. It does not have a manual override option for the transmission unlike the Tata Nano or Alto K10. Renault has developed this AMT in association with Bosch and focussed on keeping it simple and fuss free. At a price point of Rs. 4.25 lakh, the Renault Kwid AMT is just Rs. 10,000 more than the Maruti Alto K10 AMT which is priced at Rs. 4.15 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. The cheapest AMT in the country right now is the Tata Nano, priced at Rs. 2.96 lakh and Rs. 3.16 lakh ex-showroom Delhi for two variations XMA and XTA. I think the Renault Kwid AMT will find quite a few takers among buyers looking for convenience and butch looks all rolled into one. The new 1-litre motor makes it far more potent compared to the Tata Nano, but about at par with the Maruti Alto K10. What do you folks think?
