This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Jaguar I-Pace concept car. It’s Coventry-based manufacturer’s first attempt at an electric car and have they nailed it or what? The Tata-owned car maker says the final production version of this brilliant SUV will hit showrooms by the second half of 2018 making it the first real competition for Tesla’s Model X. At the launch event, Jaguar said that the I-Pace with a 90kWh battery and a drag coefficient of 0.29 will give the SUV an estimated range of 220 miles. That’s slightly more than 350 kilometres on a single charge. That’s quite impressive no! The I-Pace uses a pair of electric motors in an all-wheel drive setup that delivers a total of 394hp and 700Nm of peak torque. Jaguar says this setup will help propel the I-Pace to a 100kmph in around 4 seconds. Also impressive is the fact that the liquid-cooled battery pack was designed and developed in-house from the feedback it received from its Formula E team. The I-Pace will include 50kW DC charging capabilities which will allow the batteries to to be charged from 0 to 80 percent in just 90 minutes and to full in around two hours. The British manufacturer has said it still has a lot to learn about cooling and charging batteries from its stint Formula E and that it will put this knowledge into the I-Pace. The lack of an engine at the front has also resulted in the I-Pace’s cab-forward design. The I-Pace, Jaguar says, has more room for passengers and cargo than larger SUVs. The wide open floors and the airy cabin resembles a bit of the Tesla. The centre console is dominated by a 12-inch display for navigation and a secondary 5.5-inch touchscreen flanked by two aluminium rotary dials sitting below. The smaller screen controls the infotainment system and climate control functions. The instrument cluster features a massive 12inch display along with a full-colour heads-up display controlled by capacitative touch switches on the steering wheel. Like the iPhone 7’s home button, the buttons on the steering wheel vibrates with haptic feedback when pressure is applied. Many international auto magazines have praised the latter for the sporty suspension setup that gives the driver a sense of connection with the road while still being comfortable for the passengers. The company said that the I-Pace SUV is a fair representation of what customers can except when it goes on sale in the second half of 2018. However, the company didn't give any estimate on the I-Pace’s expected price.
