Q.Looking to Buy a Chevrolet Sail Hatchback

From what I've heard, their service network isn't as wide as Honda, Hyundai or Maruti Suzuki. Also, I find the Sail a bit dreary. Here’s why I don’t like the Sail hatchback The interior doesn’t feel as premium as the competition with the abundance of beige and grey plastics. The fit and finish too isn’t that great. Also, the rear seats are not that comfortable either. It lacks under-thigh support. Also, the ride quality is one of the best in class. It’s not a good handler though and there is substantial body roll too. However, the diesel engine sourced from Fiat is quite economical and the transmission that Chevrolet uses, a 5-speed, is quite slick too. It slots in much better than the Fiat Punto’s for sure. If I were to choose a hatchback in this segment, I’d rather go for the Maruti Suzuki Swift. Yes, it is a bit too common these days but it handles and rides way better than the Sail hatchback and you can always find a Maruti service centre in most corners of the country.

The Chevrolet Sail U-Va (that's what the hatchback variant is called) is actually one of the largest selling cars in China. But in India, the car failed to sell in large enough numbers for two reasons - it is not as great looking as the competition, and Chevrolet's sales and service network is not as robust as the competition (Maruti and Hyundai mainly). The Sail U-Va hatchback diesel variant shares a lot of components with other cars because the engine used is a derivative of the 1.3 litre Fiat multijet diesel used in the Fiat Punto, Maruti Swift, Maruti Baleno, Maruti Ritz, Tata Zest, Tata Bolt, Chevrolet Enjoy etc. The engine is pretty reliable. The only negative I really found with the Sail U-Va was its airconditioning - it's not as effective as some of the others. But the car is incredibly spacious. As far as maintenance goes, it will be comparable to Maruti / Hyundai and Honda in terms of costs for normal service.
