When you shift an automatic transmission vehicle into 'R' or reverse, it does make a mechanical sound but it should not be metal clung. The sound is of the gearbox engaging the transmission to spin backwards. Also, in manual cars, shifting to reverse does feel different than shifting to the forward gears because of the same reason. If you think this sound has started coming recently and was not there earlier, do get the gearbox checked to be sure. Also, make sure your transmission oil is changed every 40 - 50,000 kms as it greatly helps in maintaining a long life of the gearbox. Another tip while driving an automatic - make sure the car comes to a complete halt before shifting into or out of reverse gear. It happens quite often than while the car is rolling slowly, you tend to engage/disengage reverse, this is bad for the gearbox in the long run and could result in such sounds.
