Q.Mahindra Scorpio Engine Check Light Issue

Its Good to know . I do have to say that Scop has this self heal properties , things get sorted out on its own most of the times , lol.

[B]Update: [/B] I got a call from Mahindra Tiger Eye on January 20th saying the vacuum modulator had arrived and to bring the vehicle in when possible for a quick swap. Now, I had been driving the vehicle for 3 days after the last check and the engine check light had not come on after that. I mentioned this to the service advisor, and that's when he told me that to prevent any further issues and inconvenience to me, he had swapped the vacuum hoses - connecting the turbo's vacuum hose to the EGR vacuum modulator and the EGR to the turbo's vacuum modulator temporarily. Pretty thoughtful of him. Anyway, drove in to Tiger Eye at 10.30 am, job card was opened in 5 minutes, vacuum modulator was removed and new one fitted in 10 minutes, just allowing me enough time to down a cup of tea, and then I was out of there. It's covered under warranty, so it was a pretty quick and easy process. Black Fox, is a happy fox now. Coming up, another long road trip...

It happened once on my old Scorpio CRDE 2.6 4WD (Red Fox) as well, but there it didn't throw up the engine light, it just kept making burping sounds. The fault on this is not a very serious one. The modulator is responsible for opening the waste gate on the turbo. I think, what's happened is that the modulator (which is an electro-mechanical part) didn't take kindly to change in altitude and change in temperature. Interestingly, after Mahindra scanned it and cleared the code, and then checked the modulator (removed vacuum hoses and reconnected), the light hasn't come on again. Although I was advised to not over-rev till the part comes, it has stayed off still now. Since yesterday, haven't taken the Scorpio over 2,200 rpm anyway. Will replace the part anyway, just to be safe, since it's covered under warranty. Otherwise, this part costs Rs. 800 (I changed it once on the old Scorpio, as mentioned). But yes, I wish the Torque App would read Mahindra codes. It reads other things like coolant temperature, boost pressure, intake temperature, rpm, MAF, engine load, etc. Looks pretty cool to see all these gauges - and I'm actually thinking of repurposing an old smartphone for this, keeping it permanently plugged in in the car, just to watch these gauges do their thing. :-)

In fact, any German car would not have needed to be taken to the workshop to gauge the error. They are very user friendly and show up the error code on the torque app easily. Also, the German car owners never take this light to heart, its part of the fun ;)

I recently went on 1,500 kilometre road trip, which included a wonderful drive on snow-clad roads in interior Himachal and a quick run to Amritsar and Wagah with the Roadographers Club ([B][URL="https://www.zigwheels.com/forum/posts/22548-the-great-darbaar-sahib-run-hyundai-tucson"]see related thread[/URL][/B]) and then back to Delhi. My Scorpio S10 4WD, that I call Black Fox, was my vehicle of choice. So far the vehicle has had not major issues and had done about 24,000 km at the time of taking this road trip. I was headed for Kufri as my destination, but via the back roads, which are far more scenic. I took the Kala-Amb, Nahan, Kumarhatti, Chail to Kufri road. The last stretch from Chail to Kufri was fully snowed out. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n22564[/ATTACH] Now, while climbing up towards Chail, the [URL="https://www.zigwheels.com/forum/posts/1766-car-warning-lights-what-do-they-mean"][B]engine-check light in the Scorpio[/B][/URL] came on, and there was a slight loss in power. I had just filled diesel about 25 km earlier and my first thought, was that it was dirty diesel in the tank that was clogging the filter or something. I stopped the vehicle, switched it off and restarted it, but the light remained on. Anyway, I continued on my trip (related thread elsewhere) and this problem continued into the second day. Then, when I came back down from the hills towards Punjab, the light went off for a while, which foxed me. I though it was perhaps an altitude related problem. But it came back on a few KM later. Nevertheless, I finished the trip and returned to Delhi in the next two days, with the light coming on and going off intermittently. Whenever it came on, the Scorpio's pick-up would drop, but its fuel efficiency seemed to be increasing. I tried checking for error codes with a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle and Torque App, but it showed none. So, I decided to get it checked by Mahindra as there are some proprietary protocols, that general apps like Torque don't pick up. Siddharth Rathi, who runs Mahindra Tiger Eye, an authorised service centre is also on one of my Whatsapp groups and hence I decided, I would go to Tiger Eye instead of Sterling, as I felt more confident of their ability to diagnose the problem. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n22565[/ATTACH] The technician at Tiger Eye quickly plugged in the laptop and pulled up the [B]error code[/B] - [B]P0234[/B] - PowerTrain - "Boost pressure controller deviation below minimum limit". In other words, the turbo was going into an over-boost condition, causing the engine to run lean. The likely cause for such an issue is either a turbo-charger waste gate that is not opening in time, which in turn is related to a vacuum modulator not functioning properly to open the waste gate. The hoses around the turbo were checked, and all the vacuum hoses were also checked. The fault was then narrowed down to the vacuum modulator - a part that was not in stock. That will arrive in 3-4 days, so till then I will just have to drive the car very gently to avoid the engine check light coming on again. I have to keep it under 2000 rpm and 80 kmph to avoid the over-boost condition from cropping up again for now.
