A few days after revealing the 2018 Ford Mustang Coupe, the American car maker has now unveiled the convertible version. The changes made to the coupe have been carried over to the convertible as well. While the design has received mixed reactions online, I feel the changes make the Mustang look sharper and more purposeful than before. The new nose job, bumper and grille breathe a lot of character to the convertible version. I especially like how the shoulder line curves around the A-pillar and then rises again just after the doors. According to one report, the fabric roof can be lowered in 10 seconds at speeds ofupto 3mph or 4.8kmph. But that could just be a mistake. Since the convertible will be placed above the coupe, it comes with more features as well. Ford is offering individual memory function as standard through which the driver can save his favourite drive settings including suspension and steering weight. Just like the coupe, safety features such as the pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, distance alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and driver alert system will be offered in the convertible as well. The powertrain will be the same as the ones offered on the coupe - a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 or a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Ecoboost engine. Both motors are available with the 10-speed automatic transmission jointly developed between Ford and GM. The 2018 Ford Mustang coupe will definitely make its way to India next year, but there is no word yet if the convertible will find its way to our shores too. All we can do is wait and hope for the best.

The 2018 Mustang looks good in my opinion. The most important thing, other than the visual changes, is that the 3.7-litre naturally aspirated V6 is no longer available even in the USA. Ford, however, has said that the 2.3-litre Ecoboost will be revised. The revised engine is expected to boast of numbers closer to the Ford Focus RS’ engine that is rated at 350hp. Even the 5.0-litre V8 - the only engine option for India -will be revised, Ford says. Mustang’s chief engineer Carl Widman has revealed that the only carryover from the old engine is the crankshaft! There will be a new fuel delivery system that employs both port and direct injection. The V8 also gets a new quad-pipe variable exhaust instead of the current dual-pipe setup. Ford is also offering the magnetorheological dampers as part of the Performance pack for the Mustang. These dampers were earlier available only in the GT350. In a nutshell, the new Ford Mustang looks like a much better muscle car on paper. Now the long wait till this version makes its way to India.

In a ceremony in the USA, Ford took the wraps off the 2018 version of the Mustang. The latest update to this classic offering gets a host of much needed changes that put it up there with the competition. The most significant visual change has to be the nose of the car. According to Ford, its more aerodynamic and help bring down the drag co-efficient of the car. I liked the previous gen better, but I think this will grow on me as well. The biggest change however, has to be the 10-speed automatic gearbox that will be offered with both the 5.0 liter V8 and the 2.3 EcoBoost engines. The new gearbox is said to have shorter shift timings as well adaptive settings for the three different drive modes. Also, paddle shifters are standard. What I really like here is the rear design and the tweaked tail lamps. The clean, flat lines and slightly angular lamps look simply stunning. Also, the re-designed rear diffuser is more go than show. Another appreciated change in the car is the customization options available on the instrument cluster. As compared to the old one, it is now a full TFT display with a bunch of screens to choose from. The 'Regular' Drive screen The 'Classic' Track-mode display. Notice the retro tachometer, very reminiscent of the '69 Mustang. The 'Sport' inspired instruments are my favorite. Notice the tachometer design. Very different and appealing. These are the colour options on offer Mechanically speaking, Ford has upgraded the shock absorbers, claiming an improvement in ride quality, and has also fitted a new cross-axis joint and tweaked the stabiliser bars. All of these are claimed to improve handling. The facelifted Mustang also receives pre-collision systems and pedestrian detection. Tech upgrades, in the form of a memory function on the car’s computer system, can save preferred drive settings, including tweaks made to the steering and suspension. The 5.0-litre V8 has been tweaked to rev higher, and deliver more power at high revs. Ford also claims that better fuel economy has been achieved and clutch tweaks for the V8’s six-speed manual gearbox also increase torque. Ford has also made its FordPass smartphone app compatible with the Mustang, so owners can unlock, lock, find and start the car with their phone. An international launch for the facelifted Mustang isn’t expected until the beginning of 2018, wherein it should land in India as well. Also, below you will find possibly the best marketing material by Ford. Genius!
