You are really pushing the tolerance limits of the engine by squeezing out more power and torque with smaller capacity. As of now, the current 2.2 Mhawk engine has proved to be reliable even after a couple of lakh km. The older CRDe, has been known to run for over 4 lakh km without trouble.

Their engine is reliable, long lasting as well as tolerant to whatever cocktail is passed off as diesel by random fuel bunks. The last thing they'll want is to compromise on these traits. Of course they can make up for the loss of 300cc but you dont want your 140bhp 1.9 XUV leaving you stranded because the diesel you filled on the highway overwhelmed the fuel filters or the injectors. VW's diesel engines are well known to struggle with diesel quality outside of metro cities.

That said, I think M&M will have to resort a lot of turbocharging and remapping to get the 1.9litre to put out 280 Nm / 120 Bhp and 330 Nm / 143 bhp in the Scorpio and XUV500 respectively, if they want to keep the same power specs. Although some say - "there is no replacement for displacement" - I think it's quite doable. A loss of 300 cc could be made up in other ways.
