Jijo | 8 years agoAmeo gets the most powerful diesel motor in its segment. Take a look the review of the Volkswagen Ameo TDi to find out how good it is. [youtube_video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qpN719RVns[/youtube_video] video: cardekho
Jijo | 8 years agoVolkswagen has just launched the Ameo TDi variants (diesel) in India, starting at Rs 6.27 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Ameo diesel comes equipped with a 1.5 litre 4-cylinder engine, producing 110 PS at 4,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,500-3,000 rpm, and is offered with a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG. The ARAI-rated fuel efficiency figure for the DSG variants stands at 21. 73 km/l, figures for the manual TDi variants is not revealed yet. Power figures on the Ameo TDi make it the most powerful car in its segment (compact sedans in India). Here is the list of features offered with Ameo diesel: What is commendable is you get a 7-speed DSG option in two variants (one being the top-end), well done Volkswagen! Variant-wise prices as follows:
Arjun | 8 years agoJijoMalayil Hope it doesn't mean that they will plonk in the earlier 3 cylinder diesel engine. That would be quite sad if both the engines in the Ameo are old generation. Without the 1.5 diesel it would be quite a tough path ahead for the Ameo, no matter how well they price it.
Nikil | 8 years agoHahahaha. What could these "circumstances" be I wonder. Haven't they said when we can expect the launch to happen in the statement though? Considering it's a diesel VW we are talking about here, something smells fishy or should I say sooty here.
Jijo | 8 years agoVolkswagen has deferred the Ameo diesel launch, which was scheduled for today. No possible explanation was provided for the same. Did it fail an emission test at the last moment? :p “Due to unavoidable circumstances, today's announcement from Volkswagen stands cancelled. We will keep you posted on next steps,” said one of the company’s representatives in a statement.
Arjun | 8 years agoJijoMalayil This would be a good competition to the Aspire if its priced as aggressively as the Ameo petrol version. Its also nice to see that they got the latest engine in the diesel variant unlike the 3 cylinder version they got in the petrol. With the engine specs, its quite neck to neck with the Aspire and the Amaze. However, with the discounting done in Aspire's prices they would have to really take care for their initial pricing. One gotcha there would mean a lot for the car's future. This year the demand for the compact sedan has seen a downward trend, and VW did take too long to join the trend. Had they joined in a year back they would have fetched far better sales. The compact sedan sales now has a major contribution from the taxi segment , with the Hyundai Xcent and Swift Dzire being popular choices. I have seen a few Ford Aspire and Honda Amaze also, but VW is a brand the taxi segment has always kept away from. Keeping that in mind, it might not be a easy path for the Ameo diesel.
Roshun | 8 years agoJijoMalayil When will his sub-4 metre rule be taken off. I mean no offence to any car manufacturer, but trying to peddle sedan body types on a length restriction meant for hatchbacks is leading to some really disproportionate cars being churned out. To me, the Ameo is one of them. The Vento looks proportionate and so does the Polo, but the Ameo just looks quite wannabe in between them. That said, I am sure there will be a fair number of buyers for the Ameo diesel, as that 1.5 litre VW diesel is quite potent (and I'm assuming VW has fixed the emissions issues with it). I see more Ameo diesels being sold soon than petrol variants, because the 1.2, three-cylinder petrol in the Ameo is not that hot an engine, compared to its TSI sibling and to the diesel.
Jijo | 8 years agoVolkswagen India is all set to launch the diesel variant of it's under-4m sedan offering, the Ameo on 27th September. Dealerships are now reported to be accepting bookings for the same at a token amount of Rs 10,000. The 1.5 litre TDi motor that will power the Ameo produces 104 PS and 230 Nm of torque. Expect Volkswagen to price the diesel variants in the price range of Rs 6.5 - 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
Jijo | 8 years agoCardekho's take on Volkswagen's first truly made in India car, the Ameo.
Jijo | 8 years agoCheck out this Autocar India's review of the new Volkswagen Ameo. Only if it had a more powerful petrol motor, waiting for the 90 PS, 230 Nm diesel variant now :)
Nikil | 8 years agoI don't think VW will launch a CNG version straight out of the showroom floor. I also think the Ameo will sell in good numbers, especially the petrol variant since many more states can be affected by the diesel ban soon. All-in-all the Ameo looks like a product that can propel Volkswagen from the current 9th position to the top 5. Maybe. Just maybe
Praveen | 8 years agoJijoMalayil If Volkswagen launches a CNG variant and manages to price at around 6- 6.5 lacs, then it can potentially do well in the cab segment. Although, I have a feeling that Volkswagen wouldn't prefer that. It feels odd to associate Volkswagen with cabbies. :p
Jijo | 8 years agoA CNG variant will really spice things up in this segment. But, not too sure if Volkswagen will go that way right now. Maintenence costs if kept low, will change Volkswagen's perception in India. I hope the Ameo drives as well as any other Volkswagen cars out there. Waiting for the diesel variant now!
Nikil | 8 years agoHere is a spec comparison of the Volkswagen Ameo with the Ford Figo Aspire, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent.
Vidit | 8 years agoJijoMalayil, the questionable aspect of the Ameo remains that whether or not they will be selling it as a commercial vehicle. With the price of the base variant being so competitive, the Honda Amaze and the Maruti Suzuki Dzire have things to worry about. Also, if VW launches the Ameo with a CNG option or not should determine this. Another thing, the myth about VW maintenence - any brand, any model, the thing to realise is that diesel cars are the ones with high costs and not petrols.
Jijo | 8 years agoHow can Volkswagen price the sedan variant, cheaper than its hatch sibling? Cost cutting, is something i am worried about. But, with the features on offer, and Ameo prices under-cutting all its rivals. Volkswagen is on to a winner here. Only thing stopping the Ameo is the unexiciting 3-cylinder petrol motor and the perception of Volkswagen cars being expensive to maintain. Hope Volkswagen has a solution to that too!
Nikil | 8 years agoRoshun I think Volkswagen is onto a winner here. Looks like we have one more compact sedan we'll be seeing a lot more on our roads. But will it not eat into sales of the Polo.
Roshun | 8 years agoVolkswagen Ameo Prices Announced The pricing of the new Volkswagen Ameo has just been announced. It is available only in 1.2, 3-cylinder, MPI petrol as of now. The diesel will be anounced later. Here are the Volkswagen Ameo prices ex-showroom Delhi: Volkswagen Ameo 1.2 Trendline: Rs. 5.24 lakh Volkswagen Ameo 1.2 Comfortline: Rs. 5.99 lakh Volkswagen Ameo 1.2 Highline: Rs. 7.05 lakh Surprisingly, at these prices, the Volkswagen Ameo is priced even lower then the Volkswagen Polo, whose petrol variant prices are Rs. 5.55 lakh, Rs. 6.19 lakh and Rs. 7.14 lakh respectively for the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline variants. A compact sedan priced below a hatch on the same platform! Wow. The prices are even lower than its main rival the Maruti Swift Dzire, which is priced at Rs. 5.55 lakh (Lxi O), Rs. 6.46 lakh (Vxi O) and Rs. 7.24 lakh (Zxi) for the variants with airbags. (All variants of the VW Ameo get airbags and hence this comparison). NikilSJ Tagging Reshma - You wanted to check the prices, right?
Nikil | 8 years agoVolkswagen India, through social media toyda, announced that the pricing of the VW Ameo will be revealed on June 5. The company has put up a GIF image in which prices tart rolling at Rs 5 lakh. The Ameo could be priced at Rs 5.99 lakh in all probability as the VW Polo starts at Rs 5.54 lakh. Watch this space for more updates on the new compact sedan from Volkswagen.
Nikil | 8 years agoVolkswagen India rolled out its first ‘Made in India’ Ameo from its assembly line in Chakan in Pune on Wednesday (25th May, 2016). The German carmaker had recenclty invested Rs 270 crore to upgrade it’s manufacturing facility in the country. The first Ameo was rolled off the production line in the presence of Andreas Lauerman, president and managing director of Volkswagen India Private Limited. After the roll-out, Lauerman was quoted as saying, "This day marks an important event in the journey of Volkswagen in India. The Ameo symbolises yet another first as it has ben scpecially created for Indian customers.” He also said that the company has added a third shift to meet the huge demand for its compact sedan. Inspite of being a late entrant to the compact sedan segment, it seems like Volkswagen will hit the jackpot with the Ameo. As they say, good things happen to those who wait!
Kaiserketkar | 8 years ago
Yes, it does look like a Skoda design doesn't it? I'm sure in a year or so, Skoda will also launch its version of the Ameo, as a Fabia XL or a Rapid CS! Why lose out on a lucrative market?
Yeah, the Rapid-Vento seem to be the only twins that both have respectable sales figures. All the others make excellent cases against badge engineering.
Roshun | 8 years ago
The design around the number plate is more Skoda than VW. Badge engineering again?! :O
Yes, it does look like a Skoda design doesn't it? I'm sure in a year or so, Skoda will also launch its version of the Ameo, as a Fabia XL or a Rapid CS! Why lose out on a lucrative market?
Nikil | 8 years agokaiserketkar yes there will be a diesel. It will be the same 1.5-litre unit that does duty in the Polo and the Vento. However, it won't be available at the time of launch as VW is working on a new turbocharger for this unit. It will put out a claimed 112bhp now.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years ago
And here's a picture of the part everyone wants to look at. The boot of the Ameo compact sedan. It's a Polo with a boot stiched on alright, but then in India, everyone wants a sedan - even if it is under 4 metres in length. The Ameo will compete with the Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze and Tata Zest.
The design around the number plate is more Skoda than VW. Badge engineering again?! :O
The VW Ameo will initially be launched only with a petrol engine. The diesel variant is expected to come at a later date, according to a report from Autocar India. The diesel engine is likely to be the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder EA 189 Series engine but with a new turbocharger that will result in the engine developing a 112bhp instead of the current 103bhp.
Why would they not launch a diesel from the word go? They already have one doing the duty in the Polo and the Vento. They could simply launch the new diesel as an upgrade after a few months. EDIT: looks like I missed out that last post. There indeed does seem to be a diesel already!
Vidit | 8 years agoThe brochure for the upcoming Volkswagen Ameo has been leaked online. It has all the features the new car will sport along with the specification list. Here it is :
Roshun | 8 years agoBookings for the Volkswagen Ameo will begin on May 12. This new compact sedan from Volkswagen is based on the Polo and shares most of its mechanicals with the Polo hatchback. Initially, it will only come with a 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol engine as VW is still working on the 1.5 diesel engine to fix some issues after getting embroilled in a diesel emissions scandal. See: http://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/volkswagen-ameo-diesel-delayed;-petrol-to-be-launched-first/25405/ Expect prices of the Ameo to be about Rs. 20,000 - Rs. 30,000 more than the Polo variant for variant, starting at about Rs. 5.6 lakh or so.
Roshun | 8 years ago
215, I agree does sound a little unnecessary though. But the profile is quite low at 45%. Big gap between the tire and wheel arch. Lots of suspension travel, I guess. Do you guys think with this car VW will do what Ford did with new Figo? Move to what the market wants (ride quality) and move away a little from good handling and planted feeling of the car.
Quite frankly, I don't know why Volkswagen had to create the Ameo in the first place - it's a product that unique to our market given the vague legislation that we have lower excise duty for cars below 4 metres in length. That has led manufacturers to create all kinds of body styles under the 4 metre mark. VW didn't want to re-engineer the whole car and has hence worked on the Polo hatchback to create the Ameo compact sedan. Compact sedan buyers as CorsaVeloce says are of a different mind set. They want a three box car, and probably have a higher focus on comfort, as many would spend time in the rear seat. So yes, larger wheels and a softer suspension could work in its favour. Pricing is key though - if it's more expensive than the Polo, it will already price itself out of the market. So my guess is it would barely be about Rs. 20k more than the Polo variant for variant, and sell alongside for the most part.
Vidit | 8 years agoAkshat Pokhriyal, the market for this segment is such that it demands a good balance between ride quality and handling. The handling aspect of the Ameo should be taken care of by the large 16 inch wheels, and comfort would also be plenty given the suspension travel. However, I don't think Volkswagen as a brand would particularly choose between the two extreme ends - rather they'd like to strike the balance like they have done with most of their products. Having said that, the dampers and suspension setup in the Polo and Vento should be carried over to the Ameo as well. They will not develop a new setup for car based on an existing car.
Akshat | 8 years ago215, I agree does sound a little unnecessary though. But the profile is quite low at 45%. Big gap between the tire and wheel arch. Lots of suspension travel, I guess. Do you guys think with this car VW will do what Ford did with new Figo? Move to what the market wants (ride quality) and move away a little from good handling and planted feeling of the car.
Praveen | 8 years agoCorsaVeloce Ah, I see... Yes, that makes sense.
Vidit | 8 years agoPraveen, the impact of the tire profile being 215 is very minimal on fuel efficiency, specially for a car this size. Most cars in this segment have either a 175 or a 195 mm profile tire. The increase in width is barely 2 cm and the resultant increase in contact patch is even lesser. Hence the friction coefficient does not change by much. Another reason why it makes sense to have a 215 profile tire is because the boot on a compact sedan is often more than used for luggage and a tire this size would greatly benefit stability of the car.
Praveen | 8 years agoRoshun Don't you think the 215 section tires are a bit unnecessary? Yes, increased contact patch is always good for handling and braking, but it will have a negative impact on the efficiency, right? Especially considering the fact that most of the compact sedan buyers are looking for fuel good efficiency.
Nikil | 8 years agoThe VW Ameo will initially be launched only with a petrol engine. The diesel variant is expected to come at a later date, according to a report from Autocar India. The diesel engine is likely to be the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder EA 189 Series engine but with a new turbocharger that will result in the engine developing a 112bhp instead of the current 103bhp. This version of the engine is likely to debut in the Ameo and will be available with either a 5-speed manual or 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. At the time of launch, expect the Ameo to come with the 1.2-litre three cylinder petrol engine paired to a 5-speed manual that develops 75bhp and 110Nm of torque.
Vidit | 8 years agoThe boot space is also more than sufficient : 330 liters It should be interesting to see exactly at what price bracket does VW introduce this car, it'll be key if it wants to gain some lost ground on its competitors.
Roshun | 8 years agoAll those of you who love big tyres, will actually like what the Ameo (at least the variant on display) offers. It comes with 215/45 R16 tyres on 16-inch alloys. 215, just for perspective is pretty wide - as wide as the tyre that a Bolero comes with, and wider than most mid-size sedans.
Roshun | 8 years agoIn terms of mechanicals, the Ameo shares all its parts with the Polo and Vento. This is the third sibling on the PQ25 platform. The front is more or less similar to the Polo and Vento twins. VW has primarily worked only on portions after the C-pillar, that is the boot area only. Look at the dashboard, it's the same as the Polo's:
Roshun | 8 years agoLike all the compact sedans, the VW Ameo too looks kind of disproportionate from the side. The bonnet is fairly long, while the boot is a stub, almost non-existent in order to squeeze the car in under 4-metres in length. No wonder this is an India-only product for now. Looking at the sheer numbers that the Maruti Dzire and to some extent the Honda Amaze do, VW wanted a share of this pie as well. The Ameo will cater to buyers who can't quite afford a Volkswagen Vento, but still want a sedan.

Roshun | 8 years agoHere's a list of features that the Volkswagen Ameo will have: Dual-beam headlamps Electrically foldable outside rear view mirrors Door mirrors with turn indicators Reverse camera Chrome rimmed air-dam Alloy wheels Chrome on door handles All variants of the Ameo get dual airbags and ABS as standard. VW has been pretty proactive on safety that way.
Roshun | 8 years agoVolkswagen India Ameo launch conference gets underway. The company says it will bring out five new cars this year - Jetta, Beetle, Passat, Polo GTI and then Tiguan. On stage is Volkswagen Director, Passenger Vehicles, Michael Mayer.
Vidit | 8 years agoIn the next 15 months, 4 new models will be launched. First, the Ameo, followed by the Passat, then the Polo GTi and finally the Tiguan.
Vidit | 8 years agoAmeo is wholly developed at the Chakan plant, and worked on with the close eye of the Indian Government in order to meet all emission norms and safety standards of the market.
