Q.Auto Expo 2016: Hyundai Unveils Tucson
439 Views Add Comment33 CommentsNikil | 8 years agoAfter postponing the October launch for the Tucson, Hyundai India has now confirmed that the SUV will be launched on November 14. Earlier reports said that the reason for Hyundai to postpone the launch was the good response it has received for the new Elantra. Obviously, Hyundai is concerned if the launch of the Tucson will canibalise the sales of the Elantra. Watch out for CorsaVeloce's take on the Elantra on the forum.
Nikil | 8 years agoJijoMalayil I think this is the only time Hyundai can cash in on the new Elantra. The D-Segment generally witnesses sluggish sales as customers overlook these sedans for more and more SUVs these days. The only time this segmnet witnesses any action is when a brand new product is launched. These cars generally sell in good numbers for the first 3-4 months and then fall out of favour slowly. So I guess Hyundai has made a good decision by delaying the Tucosn's launch and just selling the Elantra, that too during the crazy festive season where people buy cars by the shiploads. I'm pretty sure that once the Tucson is launched, the Enlatra will only manage to get a three digit sales figure every month.
Jijo | 8 years agoThe Tucson launch (October 24th) has been deferred by Hyundai in India. Reports suggest that the reason behind this move was the positive interest their recently launched Elantra has generated over the course of time, and launching the Tucson (few variants are bound to overlap with the Elantra's pricing) will cannibalise the same. But with this festive season, I think both models could have generated more than enough bookings for Hyundai.
Jijo | 8 years agoHyundai Tucson will be launched on the 24th of October this year and the bookings for the same have reported having started at a token amount of Rs 25,000. Expect prices to start at Rs 17 lakh for the lower petrol variant end and go all up to Rs 22-23 lakh rupees for the top-end diesel variant. In this price range, the Tucson will rival the Honda CR-V and Skoda Yeti in India.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years ago
The Tuscon looks the most butch in this group, doesn't it? The Santa Fe would have looked better if the indicators were towards the inner part of the headlight cluster and the projector headlamps were at the side - I think.
Yes, the Tucson does look the most butch among the three, but it's hard not to ignore so much of similarity between the three. It's one thing to have a family face and it's another to look like they're twins- each one a little more undernourished than the other. Look at the Tucson from behind, and it looks quite like the Elite i20. Except for the slight bulge & the number plate recess having shifted from the bumper to the hatch, there is an eerie resemblance between the 6 Lac Rupee hatch and the ~20 Lac Rupee SUV. Yes, there's going to be the height difference in person, but a little differentiation would have been nice.
Vidit | 8 years agoOverdrive have also spotted two more of the India bound Tucsons on test. I quite like the Blue color on the Tuscon, looks crazy. JOY | 8 years agoMore Pictures of the Hyundai Tucson Surfaces on the net. This time the interior is more clearer which doesnt wow you in anyway. The gear knob and many elements are from cars like the Elite i20 and Creta. The car is having the sames issues as between the NEXA products and regular Maruti. Doesn't feel premium enough for the extra money. From the side profile too, the car looks like an Elite i20 on steroids especially with these masking tapes on, highlighting the similar tail light design. Jijo | 8 years agoAccording to various reports Hyundai has confirmed a petrol Tucson variant powered by a 2.0-litre VTVT engine. This is the same motor that is seen in the recently launched Hyundai Elantra, putting out 152 PS and 178 Nm of torque.
Motu | 8 years ago
Bad news! Hyundai officials have divulged to ET Auto that the upcoming Tucson will be priced in the Rs 25-30 lakh range.
I hope this is not true. I think it would be a big problem if both the Tuscon and the Santa Fe are priced in similar price ranges. They should be pricing it in the Rs 18-25 range - considering they will be assembling the Tucson here.
JOY | 8 years ago
"Originally posted by JijoMalayil" Bad news! Hyundai officials have divulged to ET Auto that the upcoming Tucson will be priced in the Rs 25-30 lakh range. If it turns out to be true, Tucson prices will overlap with its own elder sibling the Hyundai Santa Fe, with the entry level Hyundai Santa Fe coming in at Rs 28.53 (ex-showroom Delhi).
That's plain ridiculous. Why would you buy a Tucson over the full fledged 4x4's like Fortuner and Pajero Sport??? The Santa Fe is simply not selling because of this reason alone. If that is the pricing strategy, they should save the trouble and not launch it here. The speculated prices remind me of the saying, when something sounds too good to be true, It probably is. Come on Hyundai, don't make the same mistakes again.

JOY | 8 years agoMotuSid I too like the new Tucson styling. If the prices are anything like the speculation, most of the Creta top-end buyers will switch to the Tucson for sure. It really looks more premium and serious than the Creta. But all these SUVs, including the SantaFe, look like softroaders to me. The full-on SUV charisma is missing. The problem with the earlier generation was the front end styling. The side and rear looked real nice and proper until we get to the front which would look bulbous (and ugly - no offence) in the case of the Tucson and puny and out of place in the Terracan (which looked like a proper SUV from the side and the rear, kind of like the Lexus Lx470 which was a trend back in the day) which made people look over to other rough-and-tough SUV's like the Pajero SFX. Thinking of the SFX shatters the SUV concepts today (ground clearance makes everything SUV).
Jijo | 8 years agoMotuSid Frankly speaking, I loved how the old Tucson (1st generation) looked. It was like the perfect compact crossover. Not too sure about Hyundai's fluidic design theme on these so-called SUVs/Crossovers. Lost that butch appeal that it previously had.

Ronny | 8 years agoHyundai has a winner in their hands like the Creta. The Tucson would be no different in this regard too. If the Tucson would start at Rs 17 lakh, then Hyundai has a direct rival to the Honda CR-V. If offered with a diesel, then the Tucson would have an upper hand against the CR-V. To me, the Tucson would not disturb Octavia sales as the Octavia is being considered as enthusiast's car and is a good performer both on paper and on the road. The Tucson belonging to different category would please only SUV buyers or who wants much more than an executive sedan. Honda should try bring in the CR-V with a diesel in order to remain in the segment list or else would be completely off the list after the Tucson's launch. Definetely top-end XUV owners would have a look at the Tucson as it would be a premium product than the XUV and hopefully would have fewer niggles than XUV.
Jijo | 8 years agoNikilSJ Yeah, the Tucson is likely to have a clean run until the HR-V from Honda comes along (Honda hasn't confirmed it). Do you think Tucson will appeal to the prospective top-end Mahindra XUV500 buyers?
Nikil | 8 years agoJijoMalayil that's good news for someone looking at buying an SUV but doesn't want a Creta. Sources say the Tucson range will start from Rs 17 lakhs. At that price point, it will be above the recently launched Elantra and also undercut the Honda CR-V and Renault Koleos which starts from Rs 25 lakh and Rs 27 lakh respectively (the Hyundai Santa Fe is more expensive starting at Rs 33 lakh). Hyundai says the Tucson is expected to do better than the Sonata, which was discontinued a couple of months back, too. At this price, I don't see any other competition to the Tucson except for a couple of D segment sedans like the Octavia and the Jetta. I think, like the Creta, this one too will be a huge success for Hyundai.
Jijo | 8 years agoTop Hyundai India officials have confirmed that the Tucson will be launched in the month of October this year. This brings to the end the speculations that the launch will be delayed to early 2017.
Jijo | 8 years agoAccording to reports Hyundai is likely to delay the Tucson launch to December this year. The reason being the new Hyundai Elantra is slated to make its debut in September and Hyundai Tucson could cannibalize the sales of the same, as they are going to similarly priced in the Indian market. Hyundai could give the new Elantra some time to establish itself in the market before launching its SUV sibling.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoOooh yeah! Genesis should be really worth looking forward to!
Nikil | 8 years agoKaiserketkar Hyundai announced at this year's Auto Expo that they would only be focussing on the premium segment for the next two years. I guess the confidence stems from the fact that they are in a very good position in the budget hatch, compact sedan and C-Segment sedans as well. This could also mean that they might launch the premium Genesis brand in the next two years to compete directly with Mercedes, Audi and BMW. Now that's something worth waiting for.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoYes, Hyundai's recent introductions have been getting more and more premium these days. And this, while the Grand i10 is giving serious competition to Suzuki Swift, overtaking it for a second time in the past 12 months. And the Elite i20 continuing to dominate it's rivals. Hyundai's having a good year, up and down the spectrum! The Tucson should do well, considering it's a Hyundai. Considering the success of the Creta, notwithstanding it's sticker price, I think they might just get away in charging a slight premium for the Tucson as well.
Jijo | 8 years agoReports suggest that Hyundai is planning to price the upcoming Tucson aggressively in India, in the range of 17-22 lakh rupees. That puts it in direct competition with the top-end variants of Mahindra XUV500. Will Tucson find enough takers in India? Check out this Autocar India's review of the Tucson. Roshun | 8 years agoSome more spy pictures of the Hyundai Tucson have emerged. The latest one was spotted near Chennai (which isn't surprising, considering Hyundai's manufacturing plant is at Sriperumbudur on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway). The Tucson will come with a 2-litre CRDi diesel engine (1995 cc) which would mean it can go on sale in all cities in India. It produces 178PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. The diesel ban has cut short plans of many other manufacturers such as Toyota, Mercedes, Tata, BMW, Audi and others. The Tucson will be a five-seater SUV. It will be far more spacious compared to the Creta, and will compete in a segment that does not have too many five-seater players right now. It's nearest rivals are the Honda CR-V and Skoda Yeti, both of which are more expensive - if the Tucson comes in at the Rs. 20 lakh price point. The Tucson would be placed between the Creta and the Santa Fe at a Rs. 16-lakh to Rs 20 lakh price point. Looks like Hyundai has it all sorted out and will likely launch this before the festive season this year.
Jijo | 8 years agoHere is a Carbuyer UK review of the upcoming Hyundai Tucson. Nicely done!
Nikil | 8 years agoArjun apparently Hyundai isn't planning on launching any budget hatchback this year. Saw a report on the Economic Times where it mentions that Hyundai will only focus on premium cars in FY '16. "Tucson will be positioned between the in-demand Creta SUV and Santa-FE SUV. Arjun | 8 years agoIt looks like Hyundai is moving its focus form the small car segment to the more premium segments. With the premium cars like the Creta, Grand i10 and the Elite i20 doing good, I think Hyundai wants to move its brand to a little premium market. Earlier Hyundai had failed in this segment (Sonata, Elantra, etc) but the Creta has got it back in the price segment but in a different category.
Nikil | 8 years agoNamma Chennai! This is somewhere near the Madras High Court. The building on the right is the Parrys HQ I think.
Jijo | 8 years agoTucson was spotted testing in Tamil Nadu recently. Hyundai is planning to position the Tucson between the Creta and the Sante Fe in their Indian line-up of SUVs. Prices are expected to hover around the 17-20 lakh rupee mark. Check out Tucson upcoming rival, the Honda HR-V Image Courtesy: fly-wheel.com
Roshun | 8 years agoA full walkaround video of the new Hyundai Tucson. This SUV has the potential to fill a gap in the SUV market. It will likely fill the space between the Mahindra XUV500 and the Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton in the Rs. 16 lakh to Rs. 21 lakh price bracket. It will be positioned just above the Hyundai Creta. This gives Hyundai one more SUV between the Creta and Santa Fe. Take a look:

Roshun | 8 years agoI quite like what Hyundai is doing with its SUV line up. The return of the Tucson comes at just the right time, while the earlier one was a bit ahead of its time. The Tucson comes into a market that is getting highly competitive. It will bridge the gap between the Hyundai Creta and the Hyundai Santa Fe.
Jijo | 8 years agoHyundai has unveiled their global SUV Tucson at the Indian Auto Expo. This is the third generation of Tucson in the International markets. We in India would be familiar with first generation of Hyundai Tucson which was discontinued in 2008, courtesy poor sales figures. This move comes in after sensing the recent demand for luxury crossovers in India. The Tucson gets a bold hexagonal grille and sleek dual LED projector headlamps. Space inside is aplenty with a well laid design theme, it stands out and looks premium. Optional 19 inch alloys are also up for grabs, a first from Hyundai. Tucson will be powered by a 2.0 litre CRDi engine which in turn producing a peak power of 182 bhp and maximum Torque of 400 Nm. This is matted to a six speed transmission. Hyundai's active on demand all-wheel drive system is also being offered with the Tucson. List of features include a 405-watt Sirius audio system with a total of 8 speakers, a five inch touch screen interface, reversing camera among others. Safety features include Automatic Emergency Braking, Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist among others. Tucson is expected to be launched by mid-2016 and expect prices to hover around the 18-20 lakh rupee mark.
