Q.Auto Expo 2016: Hyundai Unveils Tucson

Hyundai Tucson will be launched on the 24th of October this year and the bookings for the same have reported having started at a token amount of Rs 25,000. Expect prices to start at Rs 17 lakh for the lower petrol variant end and go all up to Rs 22-23 lakh rupees for the top-end diesel variant. In this price range, the Tucson will rival the Honda CR-V and Skoda Yeti in India.

More Pictures of the Hyundai Tucson Surfaces on the net. This time the interior is more clearer which doesnt wow you in anyway. The gear knob and many elements are from cars like the Elite i20 and Creta. The car is having the sames issues as between the NEXA products and regular Maruti. Doesn't feel premium enough for the extra money. From the side profile too, the car looks like an Elite i20 on steroids especially with these masking tapes on, highlighting the similar tail light design. According to various reports Hyundai has confirmed a petrol Tucson variant powered by a 2.0-litre VTVT engine. This is the same motor that is seen in the recently launched Hyundai Elantra, putting out 152 PS and 178 Nm of torque.

It really looks more premium and serious than the Creta. But all these SUVs, including the SantaFe, look like softroaders to me. The full-on SUV charisma is missing. The problem with the earlier generation was the front end styling. The side and rear looked real nice and proper until we get to the front which would look bulbous (and ugly - no offence) in the case of the Tucson and puny and out of place in the Terracan (which looked like a proper SUV from the side and the rear, kind of like the Lexus Lx470 which was a trend back in the day) which made people look over to other rough-and-tough SUV's like the Pajero SFX. Hyundai has a winner in their hands like the Creta. The Tucson would be no different in this regard too. If the Tucson would start at Rs 17 lakh, then Hyundai has a direct rival to the Honda CR-V. If offered with a diesel, then the Tucson would have an upper hand against the CR-V. To me, the Tucson would not disturb Octavia sales as the Octavia is being considered as enthusiast's car and is a good performer both on paper and on the road. The Tucson belonging to different category would please only SUV buyers or who wants much more than an executive sedan. Honda should try bring in the CR-V with a diesel in order to remain in the segment list or else would be completely off the list after the Tucson's launch. Definetely top-end XUV owners would have a look at the Tucson as it would be a premium product than the XUV and hopefully would have fewer niggles than XUV.

Sources say the Tucson range will start from Rs 17 lakhs. At that price point, it will be above the recently launched Elantra and also undercut the Honda CR-V and Renault Koleos which starts from Rs 25 lakh and Rs 27 lakh respectively (the Hyundai Santa Fe is more expensive starting at Rs 33 lakh). Hyundai says the Tucson is expected to do better than the Sonata, which was discontinued a couple of months back, too. At this price, I don't see any other competition to the Tucson except for a couple of D segment sedans like the Octavia and the Jetta. I think, like the Creta, this one too will be a huge success for Hyundai.

Top Hyundai India officials have confirmed that the Tucson will be launched in the month of October this year. This brings to the end the speculations that the launch will be delayed to early 2017.

According to reports Hyundai is likely to delay the Tucson launch to December this year. The reason being the new Hyundai Elantra is slated to make its debut in September and Hyundai Tucson could cannibalize the sales of the same, as they are going to similarly priced in the Indian market. Hyundai could give the new Elantra some time to establish itself in the market before launching its SUV sibling.

I guess the confidence stems from the fact that they are in a very good position in the budget hatch, compact sedan and C-Segment sedans as well. This could also mean that they might launch the premium Genesis brand in the next two years to compete directly with Mercedes, Audi and BMW. Now that's something worth waiting for.

Yes, Hyundai's recent introductions have been getting more and more premium these days. And this, while the Grand i10 is giving serious competition to Suzuki Swift, overtaking it for a second time in the past 12 months. And the Elite i20 continuing to dominate it's rivals. Hyundai's having a good year, up and down the spectrum! The Tucson should do well, considering it's a Hyundai. Considering the success of the Creta, notwithstanding it's sticker price, I think they might just get away in charging a slight premium for the Tucson as well.

Some more spy pictures of the Hyundai Tucson have emerged. The latest one was spotted near Chennai (which isn't surprising, considering Hyundai's manufacturing plant is at Sriperumbudur on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway). It looks like Hyundai is moving its focus form the small car segment to the more premium segments. With the premium cars like the Creta, Grand i10 and the Elite i20 doing good, I think Hyundai wants to move its brand to a little premium market. Earlier Hyundai had failed in this segment (Sonata, Elantra, etc) but the Creta has got it back in the price segment but in a different category.

I quite like what Hyundai is doing with its SUV line up. The return of the Tucson comes at just the right time, while the earlier one was a bit ahead of its time.
