Q.Auto Expo 2016: Tata showcases Nexon compact SUV
597 Views Add Comment35 CommentsNikil | 7 years agoIn an interview with MoneyControl, Tata Motors Managing Director Guenter Butscheck revealed that the Nexon compact SUV will be launched ahead of Diwali this year. The compact SUV will be a very important model for Tata Motors as it competes in a hotly contested segment ruled by the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. The Tiago hatchback has been doing really well in the market and Tata expects the Tigor, touted to be the most affordable compact sedan, and the Nexon to take the game forward. Earlier this week, the Nexon was showcased in its production avatar at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and from the pictures, it looks like the top-end variant will be equipped with a lot of kit including projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED taillamps, ceramic side finisher, contrast roof, 17-inch alloy wheels and Tata’s ConnectNext infotainment system. A 1.5-litre four cylinder diesel variant has been confirmed for now and will likely be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The petrol variant, although not confirmed as of yet, will likely be powered by the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine from the Zest/Bolt. The model displayed at Geneva also featured a Terrain Management rotary dial which could be a hint that the manufacturer is planing to equip the top-end variant with a four-wheel drive system - something which the Vitara Brezza and the EcoSport misses lacks. The top-end variant might also get colour-coded dashboard trim as seen in the picture below. Image courtesy: Indian Autos Blog
Nikil | 7 years agoSpy photos of the upcoming Tata Nexon shot around Pune has revealed that the crossover will come with a touchscreen infotainment system. In all likelihood, the system is may inly be available in the top-end trim with the floating, touchscreen Harman unit with 8 speakers. The touchscreen is bigger than the one we’ve seen in the Hexa, Bolt and Zest which feature a 6.5-inch display unit. The top-end variant will also get dual-tone paint, 16-inch alloy wheels with diamond cut finish, ceramic side and rear finisher and rear parking sensors with a camera. Image courtesy: theautomotiveindia.com The Nexon will be launched only in the second half of 2017 and will be preceded by the launch of the Hexa, Kite5 compact sedan and the Tiago AMT.
Jijo | 8 years agoI know we have enough spy shots of the Nexon. But this one appears to adorn Tiago's Sunburst Orange shade. And doesn't it look mean and significantly wide from the rear? When are you launching it, It's been a long wait Tata Motors! Coutersy:- Autocar India Forum.
Arvind | 8 years agoThe upcoming new Tata Nexon compact SUV was spotted once again by a reader of Crankit.in, this time the compact SUV looks like inching closer to its production form as all parts of the SUV are correctly assembled, unlike the previous prototypes, which has some other basic headlights cluster other than the Nexon's own fitment. The website also states that the car has the red color and appears like the top-end version, as it features new Alloys, Projector headlamps, LED Drl's and other stuffs. But it is very safe to assume that Nexon will be launched only after the launch of Tata Hexa and the Kite 5 sedan, resulting to an expected launch around second half of 2017. What impresses me more is the design of the interiors, like the popup display for example, which is never seen before in a Tata car. The Interiors clearly suggest how serious Tata wants to play its game in the growing compact SUV segment. Nikil | 8 years agoThe Nexon compact SUV was spotted testing again. These pictures courtesy Motoroids show the Nexon being tested somewhere in the Leh-Ladakh region. The report from Motoroids said that there were two test cars. These two cars could be the petrol and diesel version being tested for endurance and reliability in some of the worst road conditions that our country has to offer. It sure looks like Tata is finally putting in much needed effort into their new cars. Nikil | 8 years agoJijoMalayil, except for the roof rack everything else looks good. Love the aggressive stance up front with the chunky wheels, muscular fenders and bumpers. The grille looks good too. I think companies like DC and MotorMind will probably start offering body kits for the Nexon based on how successful it is.
Jijo | 8 years agoHere is a rendering done by Shoeb R Kalania with the possible customization options, that was displayed the Indian Auto Expo. Doesn't it look nice? Maybe, this is too extreme to make it to production. This rendered Nexon features tougher body cladding, a roof box, ORVMs replaced with cameras and alll-terrain tyres wrapped around those dark alloys. Blackened out triple slat grille, side steps and that brushed aluminium finish for the pillars and the roof gives the Nexon a lot of character. Like it?
Roshun | 8 years ago
JijoMalayil, we can't be sure if the Nexon is a compact SUV or not until it comes out. I can tell you that it did not look particularly small at the expo, hence the thought of it being of a different segment altogether. And yes, you can say that Tiago has good sales, but its lesser than the expected numbers for sure. It competes in a segment where more than 30,000 cars are sold every month and hence the numbers are small compared to this figure.
The Tata Nexon is a compact SUV. It measures 3990 mm in length, putting it under 4 metres. It has 1.5 litre diesel engine and 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine options. I did check it out at the Expo. It is compact, but the way it has been designed, is that there is plenty of cabin space. The rear squat Evoque like looks and the short bonnet make for more passenger room inside. If anything, it promises to be more spacious than the Brezza ane EcoSport at least in terms of passenger seating space.
Nikil | 8 years agoCorsaVeloce my guess is that the Nexon would compete with the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. Chevrolet and Hyundai are also planning to bring in a new compact SUV based on the Adra Concept and Carlino Concept that they showcased at the Auto Expo. Looks like the Vitara Brezza will finally have some competition in the next year or two.

Jijo | 8 years agoCorsaVeloce Isn't Nexon a compact SUV? I think it would pitted straight against the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ford Ecosport. The XUV Aero Concept, even if put to production will be a much costlier car, i guess. And Tata Tiago is generating substantial sales figures, atleast by Tata standards :p
Vidit | 8 years agoJijoMalayil, Im not sure where this car would be placed in their line-up. It looks more like a sportsback and going by that, it may create its own segment. Future competition to this car could be the XUV Aero, if at all it enters production. Also, this won't be the first attempt by Tata to capture a larger audience. With the launch of the Tiago, Bolt and Zest, they wanted to achieve just that. But considering the fact that they were not able to capture a decent enough market size, it seems unlikely with the Nexon as well.
Jijo | 8 years agoLooks like Tata is going all out with the Nexon. If you ask me, this is the car that is going to change Tata Motor's image in India. No wonder Tata is taking this long to develop the production version. Hopefully they bring the Nexon out by early 2017. Somebody to give Vitara Brezza, India's largest selling "SUV", some serious competition. What say?
Vidit | 8 years agoSome fresh spyshots of the Nexon have been captured by RushLane. From the looks of it, the production car will retain similar projector lamps as showcased on the Concept at the Expo. The design is fresh and looks like it may work well with th changing consumer tastes here. Jijo | 8 years agoTata Nexon was spied with an AMT box by Motoroctane. So, i guess we can except an AMT version right from the launch.
Roshun | 8 years ago
Tata is doing good improving their products, but with the dealerships that they have, the competitors do not have to take much effort to pull them down. Day before yesterday, one of the dealers for Tata motors came to my office. They had kept a Zest XMS, and a Nano XMA on display... Even if Tata does improve its product lineup, if their dealerships are still out there to pull them down, I do not understand how things will improve. Other than the product lineup, Tata needs to revamp its dealerships, get better trained salesmen, and get the dealerships in sync with their products and the people whom they should market it to.
That is really good feedback Arjun and this is what the higher ups at Tata need to see. The marketing team speaks a different language with its HorizonNXT strategy, but that does not seem to trickle down the line to dealerships, which is the actual customer facing face. If that does not change, nothing can help Tata's fortunes. Not even a hot vehicle like the Nexon.
Nikil | 8 years agothemallustig thanks for the shots of the interior. It definitely looks good. Hope plastic quality inside is better than Zest/Bolt. Glad to see Tata making quite a lot of effort to improve their cars over the last few years.
Themallustig | 8 years agoA few shot of Nexon's interiors. Looks a lot more contemporary than in the Vitara Brezza. The stand alone touch screen display, those thick silver accents that run across the dashboard. Plastic quality has definitely gone up! Look at that textured plastic used on the dash. Dials could have been better laid out. (Notice the reflection of digits around it). A MID gives out all vital stats like time, instant fuel consumption, trip etc. Dashtop 6.5 inch screen disassociated display. Infotainment system designed by HARMANTM with 8 speakers. That includes voice control and command recognition. Control systems look ergonomically sound. Looks elegant and simple right? Three driving modes for varying driving requirements. Why do i have a feeling that this is the car that is going to turn Tata's fortunes around?!
Arjun | 8 years ago
The Nexon will beat the Vitara Brezza hands down. Provided Tata tunes the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine right. Finally it all comes down to the power-to-weight ratio of both the compact SUVs, doesn't it?
Niki Lauda , I understand your racing heritage and I guess on the track the Nexon may beat the Brezza hands down. However, most of the buyers would not be buying the SUV for the power. In my opinion, the Compact SUV segment only needs macho looks, good ground clearance and decent boot space.I do not think most of the owner know or care about the power to weight ratio or the figures. In my opinion, here the race will be in the selling numbers, and Brezza will take the lead for sure. The Maruti loyalists would not deter from buying whatever Maruti has to offer, if it fits in the budget. However, the Nexon would give a fight to the TUV300. Even though the looks are quite the opposite in case of TUV300 and the Nexon, there are many who are not impressed with some angles of the TUV300. Also, the engine is a 3 cylinder and some find it too harsh. I believe these are the customers that Tata should target and improve upon their service to get a better brand image.

Themallustig | 8 years ago110PS in a small cross-over? Those are for enthusiasts, what really matters i guess, is the drive-ability of the motor. Look at the Revotorq turbo/ Revotron petrol engines in the Zica/Tiago, inspite of being more powerful on paper than its competitors (especially Maruti Suzuki) the engines are not at all exciting to drive! Hope the same doesn't happen to Tata's 1.5 litre diesel/ 1.2 litre petrol motors in the Nexon. :p
Mr. Fox | 8 years ago
Come on “Fox ji”, Against Vitara Brezza, Nexon stands no chance. It is going blow the competition out of the water. The tried and tested 1.3 litre in the 90PS tune will be the favourite among masses. And with rumours of the 1 litre booster jet engine (100 PS+) making its way in to Vitara Brezza, bye bye competition! The Nexon is too cute to be termed as a compact SUV. It lacks the purpose built feel of the likes of Vitara Brezza. With an estimated price tag starting at Rs. 5.5 lakhs, and being sold through Maruti Suzuki’s normal dealership, it will even eat into the sales of its own premium hatchback offering Baleno, let alone Tata Nexon.
Tata's engines of choice for the Nexon: 1.5 litre diesel putting out 110 PS of power and 260 Nm of torque with a six-speed manual transmission. Maruti's engine of choice for the Brezza - old 1.3 litre diesel with 90PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. Assuming both Nexon and Brezza weigh the same or thereabouts, the Nexon will have the edge. Ok, let's look at petrol engines. If the Brezza does come with the 1-litre boosterjet, it does have a fighting chance. That 3 cylinder 1-litre boosterjet puts out 110PS of power and 170 Nm of torque. Hey, and guess what? Tata's Revotron 1.2 litre petrol puts out 110PS and 170 Nm of torque! I rust my case!
Roshun | 8 years ago
I have not seen either of the cars in flesh, but from the pictures, the Brezza looks more SUVish and mature. I feel the Nexon still has Indica's silhouette. One of the main reasons many people still do not prefer the Zest and the Bolt, is because it still reminds them of the Indica, which is a very old design. Even though the recent cars by Tata motors have come a long way from the Indica in terms of quality and interiors, they still do not seem to be an all new product from the scratch. Its great to know that Tata has decided to come up with their own oil burner and not to stick with the National engine. 110ps is good power for a compact SUV, and it will push it to the top of the line competing with the Renault Duster, over taking the TUV300 and the Ecosport in terms of power and torque. Even though this is a great effort and looks like a great product by Tata motors, I feel it should have had shared it looks from the Safari, than from the Indica. From many angles the Nexon still looks like a hatchback than an SUV. I feel it needed more straight lines than curves to get the SUV like styling.
I agree. Tata is quite reluctant to stray from its design philosophy - hence you will continue to see the smiling face on Tata cars (the humanity line as Tata calls it). The Safari / Safari Storme is from a previous school of thought - a time when Tata did not have this HorizonNext design school of thought in place. However, I do like the rub-off influence of Jaguar-Landrover in the Nexon. That pop-up infotainment screen looks good and so does the dash and centre console. I think Tata has a good thing going - provided the 1.5 litre diesel and new 6-speed gearbox prove their mettle.
Arjun | 8 years ago
I don't know if a lot of people will agree with me, but I find the Tata Nexon to be a hotter compact SUV than the Maruti Vitara Brezza. I think the latter is a whole lot of hype. The Nexon looked brilliant in the 2014 Auto Expo and I am glad to see that Tata has not sacrificed much from then to the production variant in 2016. I found this video from Autocar which has an interview with Pratap Bose, the head of design at Tata Motors - the brains behind this funky Nexon. A few things that stand out in the design are the efficient use of space. Tata has taken feedback from the Zest / Bolt seriously. This one has one-litre water bottle storage in the doors, space on the centre console, a nice touch is the click-the-Nexon-logo-to-open glove box and there's an umbrella holder! 16-inch wheels, muscular fenders and that dual tone colour (please keep it Tata) looks nice. The rear has some influence from Jaguar-LandRover. Is it just me, or do I see a baby Evoque inspiration at the rear? And then there's the drive-mode selector - that knob looks like the gear selector knob in Jaguar cars. Yep, good stuff Tata! If there is one compact SUV that can really pull the rug out from under the Brezza, it is the Nexon. Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoI know, it's really strange why camoflage is still being used on the Nexon, when everything to know about the Nexon is already in the public domain. [Or maybe the guys down in Coimbatore didn't get the memo that the Nexon was showcased in the Auto Expo?! ;) ]
Roshun | 8 years agoAlthough Tata had showcased a production-ready Tata Nexon at the Auto Expo, it is still continuing testing of the Nexon with camouflage all around the country. These images were sent to us by one of our readers, Mohammad Bilal, from near Ooty, where he found the Nexon testing with full camouflage and dummy lamp units. Interestingly, the Nexon that he found testing had a TN37 registration - which is the Coimbatore RTO. Makes you wonder why Tata would register it there. It's quite possible that Tata may push up the launch of the Nexon to cash in on the craze for compact SUVs. Maruti's Vitara Brezza would also soon be out and Tata would be rather late to this party if it didn't speed things up. Take a look at the spy images of the Nexon from Ooty. Nikil | 8 years agoLatest reports suggest that the Nexon could make its way into Tata showrooms before the Kite 5 compact sedan does. I have a hunch that the Nexon will be out before the festive season as Tata might want to save that slot for the Kite 5. What do you think?
Nikil | 8 years agoIs it just me who thinks Tata's new designs are quite good looking? After seeing the Zica and the Nexon in flesh at the expo, I just can't get over the fact that Tata is finally making some good looking and well packaged cars. The Nexon's dual-tone colour scheme is quite good and makes the car look compact. The top-end variant of the Nexon will get a touchscreen infotainment attached to the dash. It looks a bit like BMW's displays don't you think? The infotainment system is basically Tata's ConnectNext system that is already available in the Bolt/Zest. So expect a whole lot of features like Bluetooth music streaming, Bluetooth telephony and navigation. Expect the upper half of the dashboard to be covered with sof touch plastic. The steering wheel could be borrowed from the Zest/Bolt as well and will have controls for media and phone function built in to them. The middle portion of the dashboard gets a brushed silver/aluminium effect and looks a lot better than a piano black finish. A drivers' armrest will also be available in higher variants. From what we know of the Zest/Bolt and the pictures below, I think the door pockets won't be able to take a one litre bottle. That's a shame because it was one of the major faults of the Zest/Bolt and Tata had an oppurtunity here to rectify it. From the shot below, it is clear that the Nexon will get height adjustable seat belts and a sunglass holder and other cubby holes on the roof. The seats look quite plush too. The Nexon, I feel, has just the right amount of stuff to take on the Ford EcoSport and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Can't wait to pit them against each other now.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoThe Nexon looks the part, but features and pricing will be the key! Tata cannot afford another pricing debacle.
Nikil | 8 years agoThe Tata Nexon, after its official unveil at the 2016 Auto Expo, has been caught testing by Samik Jonak Gosh in Kolkata. The Nexon is slated for launch either during the festive season or just before the end of this year. The Nexon, measuring 3,995mm will be shod with 16-inch alloy wheels on the higher variants, while the lower variants are expected to get 15-inch wheels. The Nexon’s ground clearance is an impressive 200mm and it gets projector headlamps, contrast-coloured roof, LED taillights and LED daytime running lights as well. The Nexon is expected to be powered by a turbocharged Revotron 1.2-litre petrol engine and an all-new 1.5-litre diesel mill that is capable of putting out 110PS and 260Nm of peak torque. Expect the petrol variant to get driving modes like the Zest and the Bolt. The Nexon is likely to get a six-speed manual to send power to the front wheels.

Roshun | 8 years agoThe most exciting vehicle from the Tata stable at the Expo has got to be the Tata Nexon. This compact SUV, which was first showcased as a concept at the last Auto Expo in 2014 has now become a production ready vehicle. This vehicle, when launched, will compete with the Maruti Brezza and Ford EcoSport. This is, in fact, a trend we are seeing at the Auto Expo this year. The Nexon shares its engines with the Tata Zica and the Tata Bolt. The petrol variant of the Nexon comes with the 1.2 litre, four-cylinder Revotron petrol engine that the Tata Zest uses. This engine will put out 170 Nm of torque and 110PS of power with a five-speed manual transmission (and perhaps an AMT too). The diesel variant of the Tata Nexon will have a new 1.5 litre diesel four-cylinder diesel engine that Tata is developing which puts out 110PS of power and 260 Nm of torque. This will come with a new 6-speed manual transmission and probably an AMT too later. Earlier, it was speculated that Tata would plonk in the 1.3 litre multijet diesel that all the other Tata vehicles such as the Vista, Bolt and Zest have, but it looks like Tata is moving on from the so-called "National Engine" which is perhaps a good thing. The vehicle features, twin-beam headlamps with projectors (probably only for the top-end variant). The six-speed manual and new 1.5 litre diesel engine could be a game-changer for Tata, as the competition (read Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza) have only five-speed transmissions in the manual variants. The EcoSport does offer a six-speed automatic with a 1.5 litre petrol engine though. The styling of the Nexon is fresh, but you can still see the family look - what Tata calls the humanity line in the front grille - or what we all call the "smiling face". It's the proportions of the Tata Nexon that are interesting. Interior cabin space is pretty good. In profile too, the raised ground clearance and muscular fenders do look quite purposeful. The Nexon is built on Tata's X1 platform - a platform that also underpins vehicles such as the Tata Vista. Hence, expect Tata to price the vehicle quite aggressively. It will probably fall in the price range of Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh, competing with the Brezza and EcoSport like we mentioned. The Nexon also rides on 16-inch wheels with 215/60 R16 tyres (we've seen these on quite a few new vehicles in this segment - case in point being the VW Ameo as well). The rear sports clear lens tail-lamps that are quite smart to look at. Now, this is not a concept - this is the production ready version, so expect this to hit showrooms in this very form when it is launched. The tough look at the rear is enhanced by the dual-tone colour scheme. Take a look at the rear hatch, it is fairly low, which should allow for easy luggage loading. A quick look at the interiors of the Tata Nexon. Look at this Jaguar inspired drive selector, that can switch between city mode, eco mode (that leaf) and sport mode. Looks quite neat: The specs available for the Tata Nexon are still a bit sketchy. But here's what we know so far, gleaned from Tata's site: Follow this thread for more updates on the Tata Nexon coming soon.
