Q.Auto Expo 2016: Tata showcases Nexon compact SUV

The upcoming new Tata Nexon compact SUV was spotted once again by a reader of Crankit.in, this time the compact SUV looks like inching closer to its production form as all parts of the SUV are correctly assembled, unlike the previous prototypes, which has some other basic headlights cluster other than the Nexon's own fitment. But it is very safe to assume that Nexon will be launched only after the launch of Tata Hexa and the Kite 5 sedan, resulting to an expected launch around second half of 2017. What impresses me more is the design of the interiors, like the popup display for example, which is never seen before in a Tata car. The Nexon compact SUV was spotted testing again. These pictures courtesy [I]Motoroids [/I]show the Nexon being tested somewhere in the Leh-Ladakh region. The report from [I]Motoroids[/I] said that there were two test cars. These two cars could be the petrol and diesel version being tested for endurance and reliability in some of the worst road conditions that our country has to offer. It sure looks like Tata is finally putting in much needed effort into their new cars. [USER="21"]JijoMalayil[/USER], except for the roof rack everything else looks good. Love the aggressive stance up front with the chunky wheels, muscular fenders and bumpers. The grille looks good too. I think companies like DC and MotorMind will probably start offering body kits for the Nexon based on how successful it is.

Here is a rendering done by Shoeb R Kalania with the possible customization options, that was displayed the Indian Auto Expo. Doesn't it look nice? This rendered Nexon features tougher body cladding, a roof box, ORVMs replaced with cameras and alll-terrain tyres wrapped around those dark alloys. Blackened out triple slat grille, side steps and that brushed aluminium finish for the pillars and the roof gives the Nexon a lot of character. Like it?

It measures 3990 mm in length, putting it under 4 metres. It has 1.5 litre diesel engine and 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine options. I did check it out at the Expo. It is compact, but the way it has been designed, is that there is plenty of cabin space. The rear squat Evoque like looks and the short bonnet make for more passenger room inside. If anything, it promises to be more spacious than the Brezza ane EcoSport at least in terms of passenger seating space.

Chevrolet and Hyundai are also planning to bring in a new compact SUV based on the Adra Concept and Carlino Concept that they showcased at the Auto Expo. Looks like the Vitara Brezza will finally have some competition in the next year or two.

It looks more like a sportsback and going by that, it may create its own segment. Future competition to this car could be the XUV Aero, if at all it enters production. Also, this won't be the first attempt by Tata to capture a larger audience. With the launch of the Tiago, Bolt and Zest, they wanted to achieve just that. But considering the fact that they were not able to capture a decent enough market size, it seems unlikely with the Nexon as well.

Looks like Tata is going all out with the Nexon. If you ask me, this is the car that is going to change Tata Motor's image in India. No wonder Tata is taking this long to develop the production version. Hopefully they bring the Nexon out by early 2017. Somebody to give Vitara Brezza, India's largest selling "SUV", some serious competition.What say?

A few shot of Nexon's interiors. Looks a lot more contemporary than in the Vitara Brezza. The stand alone touch screen display, those thick silver accents that run across the dashboard. However, most of the buyers would not be buying the SUV for the power. In my opinion, the Compact SUV segment only needs macho looks, good ground clearance and decent boot space.I do not think most of the owner know or care about the power to weight ratio or the figures. In my opinion, here the race will be in the selling numbers, and Brezza will take the lead for sure. The Maruti loyalists would not deter from buying whatever Maruti has to offer, if it fits in the budget. However, the Nexon would give a fight to the TUV300. Even though the looks are quite the opposite in case of TUV300 and the Nexon,there are many who are not impressed with some angles of the TUV300. Also, the engine is a 3 cylinder and some find it too harsh. I believe these are the customers that Tata should target and improve upon their service to get a better brand image.

110PS in a small cross-over? Those are for enthusiasts, what really matters i guess, is the drive-ability of the motor. Look at the Revotorq turbo/ Revotron petrol engines in the Zica/Tiago, inspite of being more powerful on paper than its competitors (especially Maruti Suzuki) the engines are not at all exciting to drive! Hope the same doesn't happen to Tata's 1.5 litre diesel/ 1.2 litre petrol motors in the Nexon. :p

Maruti's engine of choice for the Brezza - old 1.3 litre diesel with 90PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. Assuming both Nexon and Brezza weigh the same or thereabouts, the Nexon will have the edge. Ok, let's look at petrol engines. If the Brezza does come with the 1-litre boosterjet, it does have a fighting chance. That 3 cylinder 1-litre boosterjet puts out 110PS of power and 170 Nm of torque. Hey, and guess what? Tata's Revotron 1.2 litre petrol puts out 110PS and 170 Nm of torque! I rust my case! :cool:

Tata is quite reluctant to stray from its design philosophy - hence you will continue to see the smiling face on Tata cars (the humanity line as Tata calls it). The Safari / Safari Storme is from a previous school of thought - a time when Tata did not have this HorizonNext design school of thought in place. However, I do like the rub-off influence of Jaguar-Landrover in the Nexon. That pop-up infotainment screen looks good and so does the dash and centre console. I think Tata has a good thing going - provided the 1.5 litre diesel and new 6-speed gearbox prove their mettle.

I know, it's really strange why camoflage is still being used on the Nexon, when everything to know about the Nexon is already in the public domain. [Or maybe the guys down in Coimbatore didn't get the memo that the Nexon was showcased in the Auto Expo?! ;) ]

Although Tata had showcased a production-ready Tata Nexon at the Auto Expo, it is still continuing testing of the Nexon with camouflage all around the country. These images were sent to us by one of our readers, Mohammad Bilal, from near Ooty, where he found the Nexon testing with full camouflage and dummy lamp units. Interestingly, the Nexon that he found testing had a TN37 registration - which is the Coimbatore RTO. Makes you wonder why Tata would register it there. It's quite possible that Tata may push up the launch of the Nexon to cash in on the craze for compact SUVs. Maruti's Vitara Brezza would also soon be out and Tata would be rather late to this party if it didn't speed things up. Take a look at the spy images of the Nexon from Ooty. Latest reports suggest that the Nexon could make its way into Tata showrooms before the Kite 5 compact sedan does. I have a hunch that the Nexon will be out before the festive season as Tata might want to save that slot for the Kite 5. What do you think?

Is it just me who thinks Tata's new designs are quite good looking? After seeing the Zica and the Nexon in flesh at the expo, I just can't get over the fact that Tata is finally making some good looking and well packaged cars. The Nexon's dual-tone colour scheme is quite good and makes the car look compact. The top-end variant of the Nexon will get a touchscreen infotainment attached to the dash. It looks a bit like BMW's displays don't you think? The infotainment system is basically Tata's ConnectNext system that is already available in the Bolt/Zest. So expect a whole lot of features like Bluetooth music streaming, Bluetooth telephony and navigation. Expect the upper half of the dashboard to be covered with sof touch plastic. The steering wheel could be borrowed from the Zest/Bolt as well and will have controls for media and phone function built in to them. The middle portion of the dashboard gets a brushed silver/aluminium effect and looks a lot better than a piano black finish. A drivers' armrest will also be available in higher variants. From what we know of the Zest/Bolt and the pictures below, I think the door pockets won't be able to take a one litre bottle. That's a shame because it was one of the major faults of the Zest/Bolt and Tata had an oppurtunity here to rectify it. The Nexon looks the part, but features and pricing will be the key! Tata cannot afford another pricing debacle.

The Tata Nexon, after its official unveil at the 2016 Auto Expo, has been caught testing by Samik Jonak Gosh in Kolkata. The Nexon is slated for launch either during the festive season or just before the end of this year. The Nexon’s ground clearance is an impressive 200mm and it gets projector headlamps, contrast-coloured roof, LED taillights and LED daytime running lights as well. The Nexon is expected to be powered by a turbocharged Revotron 1.2-litre petrol engine and an all-new 1.5-litre diesel mill that is capable of putting out 110PS and 260Nm of peak torque. Expect the petrol variant to get driving modes like the Zest and the Bolt. The Nexon is likely to get a six-speed manual to send power to the front wheels.

The most exciting vehicle from the Tata stable at the Expo has got to be the Tata Nexon. This compact SUV, which was first showcased as a concept at the last Auto Expo in 2014 has now become a production ready vehicle. This vehicle, when launched, will compete with the Maruti Brezza and Ford EcoSport. This is, in fact, a trend we are seeing at the Auto Expo this year. The Nexon shares its engines with the Tata Zica and the Tata Bolt. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n4147[/ATTACH] The petrol variant of the Nexon comes with the 1.2 litre, four-cylinder Revotron petrol engine that the Tata Zest uses. This engine will put out 170 Nm of torque and 110PS of power with a five-speed manual transmission (and perhaps an AMT too). The diesel variant of the Tata Nexon will have a new 1.5 litre diesel four-cylinder diesel engine that Tata is developing which puts out 110PS of power and 260 Nm of torque. This will come with a new [B]6-speed manual transmission[/B] and probably an AMT too later. Earlier, it was speculated that Tata would plonk in the 1.3 litre multijet diesel that all the other Tata vehicles such as the Vista, Bolt and Zest have, but it looks like Tata is moving on from the so-called "National Engine" which is perhaps a good thing. The vehicle features, twin-beam headlamps with projectors (probably only for the top-end variant). The six-speed manual and new 1.5 litre diesel engine could be a game-changer for Tata, as the competition (read Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza) have only five-speed transmissions in the manual variants. The EcoSport does offer a six-speed automatic with a 1.5 litre petrol engine though. The styling of the Nexon is fresh, but you can still see the family look - what Tata calls the humanity line in the front grille - or what we all call the "smiling face". It's the proportions of the Tata Nexon that are interesting. Interior cabin space is pretty good. In profile too, the raised ground clearance and muscular fenders do look quite purposeful. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n4148[/ATTACH] The Nexon is built on Tata's X1 platform - a platform that also underpins vehicles such as the Tata Vista. Hence, expect Tata to price the vehicle quite aggressively. It will probably fall in the price range of Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh, competing with the Brezza and EcoSport like we mentioned. The Nexon also rides on 16-inch wheels with 215/60 R16 tyres (we've seen these on quite a few new vehicles in this segment - case in point being the VW Ameo as well). Now, this is not a concept - this is the production ready version, so expect this to hit showrooms in this very form when it is launched.
