Q.Confused about buying a safe used car

Honda city will be better in that aspect but Corolla is better in service costs, long term reliability, fuel efficiency and safety. The Corolla is also more sturdy. The city would be better in terms of parts availability but the overall service experience and costs would be lesser for the corolla.

Thanks Arjun and Joy, if I choose corolla(not altis) then availability of spares will be a problem(if i use the car until 2020)? The reason being my budget is around 2lakhs. I may not get altis withing this budget.

Do not give anything in writing as he himself has not provided any while accepting the money. He just wants to use that to get out of any claims if made in future. Two possible ways out of this. 1) you seek the help of local politician or somebody who knows this guy in person and get to a more amicable settlement. 2) print the RTGS details and approach the police for a settlement. I agree with Arjun that this should only be a last resort.[The seller will stand his ground being a lawyer(as he can take up his own case and wait for the judgement even if it takes time)]. I doubt if he will agree to a full refund, try your best to get max amount out of him.

Thanks[/QUOTE] Well you can't go wrong with both these cars. The Corolla will be lower on maintenance as Arjun pointed. The City(3rd gen) was a good seller than the Corolla in the Indian market. So parts are easily available both genuine and in grey market. Finding used car parts is also easier for the Honda. If you are worried about maintenance, stick to the Corolla. Other than usual maintenance(~5k range), spare part costs cannot be called cheap as these cars belong to a different segment altogether. Fuel economy will be in the 8-12kmpl range overall but you should be fine as your monthly run is only a 1000 kms. Another car that gets you more value for money and yet plaster a wide grin to your face would be the FIAT Linea Tjet+(2009-11) The resale value is not that great so you can have it for the same range as the City and Corolla for an immaculate less used car. It is more safer with thicker body shell, 2 airbags, 4 wheel disc brakes and has the party piece which is the Turbo charged 1.4L Tjet engine(114ps/207Nm). The feature list also makes it relevant by todays standards as it has leather seats, 16" alloys, Climate control, steering mounted controls, Blue and me etc It has a longer 15000km or once a year service interval and all spare parts(Genuine) be it even some plastic clip or oil, coolant etc everything is available on 99rpm.com website and delivered to your doorstep. If you can find a well maintained car, then it would be the most paisa vasool car considering your low usage. This is just an extra tip/suggestion. Any car you buy, be sure to check it thoroughly by a good mechanic if there are underlying problems or for shoddy repair works. Ask for full service records. you can also check with the insurance company whether the car had been in accidents by looking at the claim history.Regards...

Going via the legal way is one thing, but I would suggest to keep it as the last resort. Talk to the seller, and try to speak to him politely. Explain the situation well and try to get the money refunded. Or else, ask him if he would refund the money when he gets a buyer. From the seller's point of view you gave him a word of buying a car and then backed off. The token amount was given as a guarantee of buying the car. However, mostly it would be an ego issue and just apologizing and explaining the situation may help. Before threatening with legal proceedings I would recommend to speak it out and come to a negotiation.

Normally we give a token so that the vehicle is not sold to someone else. If we fail to pay on or before the agreed time frame, the amount is lost. But if there is no documentation, you can complain it to the police station and reach a settlement from there. You should talk to a lawyer or first about the proper procedure before going to the police station to avoid any future problems like the other party filing a complaint against you or something.

Many versions have dual airbags and are quite safe. They have got good ratings worldwide and there is no doubt that they are safe cars. The service costs of Toyota cars are quite low and general service is around 3-4k, which goes up to 8-9k for some services where part changes are required . Most of the time it will be within 5k. The Corolla Altis has sold well, and the parts availability should not be an issue in the near future.

If your commute isn't much and you need basic safety features, it would make more sense buying a brand new car with the up-to-date gizmos. Then, a Maruti Suzuki Celerio or even a Hyundai Grand i10 could be considered. The Hyundai i10 costs a little more than the Celerio but it comes with all the gadgets you could think of like a good music system with aux-in and usb support, power windows on all four doors and the like. It would be far less of a hassle in terms of maintenance. I personally ride a bicycle every day, a 'go-green' lover, I will rarely use the car (a long trip of 300kms per month, around 10 short trips within Bangalore per month). For this I don''t want to invest huge amount on Ford Figo or Volkswagen Polo (the car that I can actually afford to buy now). And at the same time I want to buy a car which has at least the minimum safety features (because life is most important right). So could not decide whether to buy the OLD Ford Ikon (investment angle) or NEW Ford Figo (latest safety features angle) Also thinking of buying the new Maruti Celerio, which satisfies both angles (investment and latest safety features). Buying a European brand for throw away prices is like walking into a bear trap.So if your 80k budget is non negotiable.at least try to buy a Japanese/Korean car in the interest of reliability.The Ikon,Accent(Diesel),Corsa,Lancer,TATA's of all kinds etc are a strice no-no as people sell them off because of high maintenance bills than the value of the car itself.I am not saying you will not get a good Ikon,but it is highly likely that you may end up with a bad example.The Ikon in particular was infamous for the high maintenance bills although being quite Joyful to drive,hence the 'Josh machine' title.The same story is with the Skoda Octavia.Instead get a 'common model'(easy availability of spares is needed since models might be discontinued).Esteem Type 3 is a good choice with great reliability and good features in the VXi trim.Maintenance and spares cost is low as well.Wagon R(Old model) is another option but these lack modern safety features.Accent Petrol is a feasible option as it has ABS in the top model but again some critical spares are now getting hard to come by.so if you are considering it,inspect the condition of the car thoroughly by a professional before buying.Regards...

In terms of variants, the 1.3-litre was sold as the Flair before it was christened the Classic. I think the older Flair cars would fit your budget. The Classic came with a facelift, which in my opinion, looked hideous. the Flair had, well more flair with those cat eye like headlamps and mesh grille. Later version came with the option of the sportier front bumpers that came with the 1.6-litre variant. They had fog lamps as standard and looked like a proper Ford from the late 90s, like the iconic Ford Focus RS.

The Ikon is a good option though availability of spares may be an issue later. I would suggest [USER="263"]Ahobilam Bhud[/USER] to go for the 1.3-litre Rocam engine as that was one model that was widely sold across the country, so finding spares and parts won't be much of an issue. Fuel efficiency wise too, the 1.3-litre performs way better than the 1.6-litre petrol, My dad used to have a 1.3-litre Rocam before and I remember it returning close to 13kmpl in the city and 15-16kmpl out on the highway. The budget of 80,000 would not get you the later generation sedans which were safer. The cars which you would get would be Hyundai Accent, Ford Ikon, Maruti Esteem , Opel Corsa. All these cars have been discontinued, the maintenance would become difficult as time passes. According to your priorities, I would suggest you to go for the Ford Ikon. The Ford Classic, mentioned by Roshun is a great choice, but I don't think you would get one in the budget. The Ford Ikon is quite well built, and has good suspension and handling. A more safer option would be the Opel Corsa, but the parts for it are very difficult to get, so I would suggest you to avoid that car. Maruti Esteem is quite bad in terms of safety, so I would not recommend it. The Hyundai Accent is also a good choice, and it has parts more readily available, but in terms of safety, I think the Ikon is a better option.

Getting a sedan at Rs. 80,000 is a tough call, because you would most likely get cars that are discontinued - which means in the long term, finding parts would be a problem. Plus, these cars would be fairly old and may have driven a fair number of Km. However, if you do want to look at a car with good build quality and handling - look for an old Ford Fiesta (later called the Classic). Or you could look for a Maruti Baleno or first-gen Honda City. There are a couple of old Skoda Octavia's also listed, but these cars would be terrible to maintain. But I would suggest looking for hatchbacks - in which case you may get better deals. Even then, I think if you raise your budget to about 1.4-1.5 lakh, you will definitely get good sedans.
