Q.Ford Figo Aspire vs Honda Amaze vs Hyundai Xcent vs Tata Zest vs Maruti Suzuki Dzire vs VW Ameo
575 Views Add Comment8 CommentsJijo | 8 years agoIn the compact sedan segment, fancy a diesel automatic that doesn't burn a hole in your pocket? Then you are left with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire Diesel AMT and the Tata Zest Diesel AMT. Here is Tushar's review of the same, which one is the better buy? Nikil | 8 years agoShriniv485 good spot. Thanks for pointing it out. Yes in the city, the Swift Dzire has the worst FE among the cars compared. But the markings for the overall FE figures are right.
Nikil | 8 years agoThanks Albert_Arul. Like Arjun said, the reason I did not add the Etios in the comparison was because it is not a sub-4 metre sedan. However, it is priced similar to the cars compared here. The only problem with this segment is that most of these cars are now fast becoming a favourite with fleet owners. The amount of DZire, Amaze, Etios and Xcent cabs in Delhi is not even funny. Soon, this will dissuade a lot of people from buying these cars.
Arjun | 8 years agoAlbert_Arul I guess its because the Etios does not come under the compact sedan category. The compact sedan segment was formed after the 4m and 1.2 petrol/1.5 diesel engine capacity cars started getting lesser excise duties. The Etios is longer than 4mts and has a bigger petrol engine, hence does not fit in this comparison. However, with the price point, it can be compared to these cars.
Vidit | 8 years agoHere are the pictures of the Ameo TDI on the road. Pic Courtesy - CarWale
Jijo | 8 years agoNikilSJ Yes, the only thing that was stopping Ameo to become a runaway success (apart from the Volkswagen's perception), was the lack of a powerful diesel motor. The petrol was mediocre, and failed to excite. With this 108 bhp motor, it will make the Ameo the most powerful in the segment. Don't you think 6.8 lakh starting price would be a bit too steep?
Nikil | 8 years agoThe diesel version of the Ameo has been caught testing by a Carwale reader. The Ameo TDI is likely to be launched later this year, probably around the festive season. The diesel version is likely to be priced around Rs 6.8 lakh ex-showroom. The diesel variant will be equipped with the updated version of the 1.5-litre TDI engine that is likely to produce 108bhp. Gearbox options are likely to be a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG. The base Trendline version will have the same features as its petrol sibling, so you can expect body-coloured bumpers, body-coloured door handles and ORVMs with integrated turn indicators, tilt and telescopic steering wheel and single-folding rear seat along with ABS and dual-front airbags.
Nikil | 8 years agoThe compact sedan segment is currently one of the hottest in the Indian automotive market. Other than automakers raking in moolah by cashing in on the differentiated tax structure for sub-4 metre cars, it does offer customers quite a lot of cars to choose from. Now, one has the option of buying a spacious sedan with a proper boot over a regular hatchback. Most of these sedans are based on their regular hatchback brethren. But of all the options out in the market currently, which one would make more sense for you. To find out, read on. For more details on the Ameo's launch and other updates, click here The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Tata's Indigo eCS and Mahindra’s Quanto were the first few cars to duck under the sub-4 metre category and both have helped their respective manufacturer garner big numbers on the their monthly sales chart. With the arrival of more products from rival manufacturers, the sub-4 metre sedan market is hotting up. Honda gave us the Amaze and best of all, they launched a diesel variant too. All of us know how crazy our market is for the sticky fuel. The Amaze diesel set sales charts on fire and even managed to pip the Maruti Suzuki Dzire from the top spot for a while. Later, Tata introduced the Zest and Hyundai stuck a boot up the Grand i10 and called it the Xcent. Last year, Ford introduced the Figo Aspire compact sedan based on the brilliant Figo hatchback. Volkswagen, though a little late to join the party, have come out with a worthy alternative to all of the above. Does the German have what it takes to beat the current favourite - the Ford Figo Aspire? And do the oldies stand a chance in this cut throat segment? Let’s start with the enthusiasts’ favourite - the Ford Figo Aspire. Here's a spec comparo of the petrol variants of the most popular compact sedans in the market: This is a spec comparo of all the diesel version, presuming the VW Ameo comes with the same 1.5-litre TDI engine from the VW Polo: Ford Figo Aspire TDCi The Ford Figo Aspire is based on the Figo hatchback... The Ford Figo Aspire is the American auto major’s first foray into the sub 4meter compact sedan market. It gets large headlamps and looks imposing from the front. The Figo Aspire’s rear is well proportioned and as far as boot integration is concerned, Ford has done a brilliant job and the Aspire looks like a sedan rather than a hatch with a boot stuck on it. Interiors get dual-tone finish. It has been setting the sales chart on fire for the Japanese carmaker and competes closely with the segment leader - the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Amaze is available in petrol and diesel and is based on the Brio hatchback. However, unlike its competition, it looks like a proper three-box sedan instead of being a hatchback with a boot stuck on it. The Amaze gets a touchscreen infotainment system with navigation Speedometer and tachometer borrowed from the Brio hatchback The Honda Amaze has become the Japanese carmakers best-selling car in the country Front on, the Amaze looks identical to the Brio, the car it is based on. The tear drop headlights and the chrome grille give it presence. Creases along the side of the car gives it an aggressive stance But the neatest part of the Amaze’s design is the rear. The boot is well designed and does not look like an afterthought. The interior of the Amaze is the same as the Brio too and it gets steering mounted controls on the higher variants for the infotainment system. It gets a touch screen navigation system with a rear parking camera also. The front seats are a comfortable place to be but the surprising bit is the spacious rear seats. Honda engineers have to credited for the intelligent packaging. The front seats are scooped out so it offers more space at the rear. The bench is pretty comfortable with just the right amount of recline. What the engineers have excelled again in the boot department. The Amaze offers one of the best-in-class boot with a storage space of 400-litres. The only downside is that the rear seats don’t split and fold, so you cannot expand the boot space by folding the rear seats. Quite simply put, that is the Xcent’s biggest USP. This compact sedan from Hyundai shares a lot of design cues from the Grand i10. In fact, from head-on till the C-pillar, everything about the two cars are the same. However, I am not a big fan of the Xcent’s rear design. I think Hyundai could have done a better job of integrating the boot on to the Grand i10. The diesel Xcent gets a 3-cylinder 1.1-litre mill. Even though VW is quite late to the party, I think they have a winner in their hands. In terms of design, the Ameo is quite similar to the Polo hatchback till the C-pillar. The boot is quite neatly done and doesn’t look like stubby like the one of the Hyundai Xcent or the Swift Dzire. The Ameo gets blacked-out twin pod headlamp unit like the ones on the VW Vento. The Ameo also gets a fresher looking bonnet which enhances the its looks. On the inside, the Ameo’s dashboard and other bits and bobs are the same as the Polo/Vento. It gets a rear ac unit as well. A touchscreen infotainment system will also come as standard on higher variants. Pros

Contemporary styling and neat design set it apart from other compact sedan.
Well-integrated boot with 400-litres of space.
Robust, European build quality.
Reach adjust steering, gear-shift indicators and drivers’ armrest on higher variants.
Powerful and torquey diesel mill.
Cons

The Ameo’s steering is expected to be vague and indirect like the Polo/Vento.
Need a hydraulic steering unit instead of the electronic unit.
Poor NVH levels and quite clattery
Long-term reliability and VW’s after-sales service a source for worry.
More detailed pictures of all the models to come up soon. Here's a comparison of the Honda Amaze with other popular compact sedans
