Automated Manual Transmissions are fast catching up as much cheaper alternatives to conventional automatics. There are quite a few in India now, with Maruti being the first to introduce it in the Celerio about 2 years ago. In fact, at that time, I had done a video on how the AMT works: Now there are quite a few cars that offer AMT - here's the list from the least expensive upwards: Tata Nano XTA Renault Kwid AMT (coming soon, shown at the Auto Expo) Maruti Alto K10 Maruti Wagon R Maruti Celerio Tata Zest (Diesel AMT) Tata Bolt (AMT not yet launched, but it will get it soon) Maruti Dzire AMT diesel Mahindra TUV300 AMT (diesel) Mahindra NuvoSport (which is a facelifted Quanto, now coming with AMT) Renault Duster Easy-R AMT (Shown at Auto Expo, launch soon) Fiat 500 Competizione (AMT) Advantages of an AMT: * No clutch pedal, feels like an automatic * Cheaper to buy than a conventional automatic * Easier to maintain - similar to a manual transmission * Ability to drive it like a manual when needed. * Fuel efficiency as good if not better than a manual transmission Disadvantages of an AMT: * Jerky shifts if you drive aggressively * Response not as instantaneous as a manual or a DSG automatic * No P or park mode, which means you are entirely dependent on the hand brake if you park it on a slope - can't rely on keeping it in gear.
