Iconic Italian scooter maker Vespa is currently looking at diversifying its product portfolio in the country. Vespa currently sells scooters in the 125cc and 150cc segments and now the company is thinking of launching a 300cc scooter thereby creating an all-new segment in the scooter market. The new Vespa is likely to be the GTS Super 300 that was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. The Vespa GTS Super will be manufactured in India to keep costs low and will target riders who want better performance out of their scooters. The 278cc GTS Super will come with safety features such as dual channel ABS and ASR traction control as standard. It might even get a multimedia platform like the one used on the Piaggio X10 that collects all diagnostics during trips and while parked. Expect it to be something like the multi-information system (MID) displays found in modern cars. The fuel-injected 278cc engine in the Vespa 300 GTS Super has a power output of 31bhp which is close to the kind of power you get out of a Kawasaki Ninja 300 or a KTM Duke, so expect the Vespa to be a fast machine. This makes the scooter look chunky and will definitely make it more rigid and agile as well. Braking duties are taken car of by two discs at both ends. The front fork is a stylish single-sided unit. In the US, the Vespa GTS Super 300 costs $6,699. That translates roughly to Rs 4.5 lakh. Too steep for a scooter? What do you think?
