Q.BMW G310 R Spotted in South India; Launch Likely in 2017
1.6K Views Add Comment34 CommentsPraveen | 7 years agoNikilSJ Another reason could be the pricing. After Dominar's competitive pricing, other bikes look expensive for what they offer, don't you think? Also, I think launching their flagship models won't do much for the market as the prices will be stratospheric anyway. Not to mention the service reach. I also heard TVS is finding it difficult to meet the quality standards that BMW is expecting and that's why the launch is getting delayed.
Nikil | 7 years agoBMW Motorrad has delayed the launch of the G310 R yet again. Earlier, it was expected that the new roadster co-developed with TVS would be launched in April. Now, it has been decide that BMW will bring in their flagship motorcycles first which include the K 1600, R 1200, R NineT, and the S1000. There are no plans to launch the smaller capacity 800cc motorcycles as well. One reason why BMW has delayed the G310 R could be the fact that the bike needs 95 octane petrol, which is not readily available in India, or at least till next year when it will be sold across outlets in Tier II cities next year.
Praveen | 8 years agoNikilSJ I'm pretty sure KTM will trump (Dammit, Trump has really ruined this word for me) BMW in terms of technology. And no, the BMW G 310 R is not a twin cylinder motorcycle but a single cylinder one. Interestingly, the engine is tilted to the rear for better mass centralization and lower centre of gravity. I think the G 310 R will be more pleasurable to ride while the Duke will be much more exhilarating.
Nikil | 8 years agoPraveen yes, I guess it'll be a close battle no doubt. But my bets are on the BMW as it will ne less frantic and a more capable touring machine than the KTM. I guess the younder crowd will go for the KTM for its blistering performance while the more mature ones will go for the smooth twin of the BMW. I think in terms of technology on board, the BMW will trump the KTM. Let's wait and see.
Praveen | 8 years agoNikilSJ If they manage to launch it in April, then I feel the G310 R will face fierce competition from the 2017 390 Duke. The next-gen Duke is likely to be even more refined, courtesy the counterbalanced engine and the power delivery will also be linear, thanks to the inclusion of Ride-by-Wire throttle. I can't wait to see these two bikes in the flesh and do a comparo!
Nikil | 8 years agoBMW Motorrad is likely to kick start their Indian operation in early 2017. The bike manufacturer is currently in talks of setting up dealerships across the country. "We are working on setting up new teams and dealerships for BMW Motorrad. Bikes to be launched by 2017," BMW India president Frank Schloeder was quoted as saying by Overdrive. The G 310R, undoubtedly the most awaited bike from the German, is likely to be launched in April 2017. The bike co-developed with TVS Motor Company will be produced at TVS’ plant in Hosur, Karnataka and is expected to come with a sticker price of Rs 1.8 lakh, a recent report said. The motorcycle has been undergoing testing in the country since February.
Praveen | 8 years agoMore pictures have emerged online. Have a look at the pictures from Motociclismo: Note the long travel suspension on both front and rear. The front wheel is larger, at 19 inches whereas the rear wheel is likely to be the same 17- inch one as found on the naked version. I think the rear pannier is the one that's available as an option on the G310 R as well. The front beak is more pronounced and looks more rugged than the one found in Himalayan. Expect the half-fairing to be protected by an optional grill, just like its bigger 1200cc cousin. I think it'll look even better with the grill. Expect the all digital console to host a multitude of information like speed, gear position, odometer readings, trip meter readings, fuel level and the likes. I think the new GS Adventure will be available in India by the time KTM comes with the 390 Adventure. Himalayan will have tough competition in the future!
Praveen | 8 years agoBMW G 310 GS Adventure Bike Spied: Pictures of the upcoming adventure bike from BMW, the G 310 GS has surfaced on online and boy it looks damn cool! The bike has the distinct tall-boy styling of the GS series, thanks to the raised suspension, beak-like front fender, and a muscular fuel tank and a rugged tail mounted pannier frame. Have a look at the pictures: The engine is likely to be tuned for more touring friendly ride. The suspension travel is also increased and the rugged tyres indicate good off-road capability, although spoke wheels would fare better off-road. We might get them as an option, I guess. The G 310 GS is expected to debut the 2016 EICMA show next month. This terrain tamer is expected to be priced at around INR 2.5 Lac and the bike's likely to be launched at the end of next year. Himalayan, the Germans are coming!
Praveen | 8 years agoKapil_Kumar If you are looking for sportbikes, then I suggest you give the GS Adventure a skip. However, if you are willing to keep your options open, then I suggest you also look out for 2017 Duke 390. It is likely to come up with a host of improvements and features which will make it a worthy buy. Check out this thread to know more about the 2017 390 Duke. Cheers!
Praveen | 8 years agoBMW Likely to Launch GS 310 Adventure in 2017: Word is that the adventure version of the highly anticipated G 310 R is likely to be launched in India sometime next year. The bike has been rendered by few publications and if the actual product looks like those renderings, then Himalayan is going to have sleepless nights! Here's the rendering from Indianautosblog: The GS Adventure is likely to be equipped with a pair of long-travel inverted forks at the front coupled with a beefy monoshock at the rear. The engine is likely to be tuned for more torque at low revs rather than outright power. Raised exhaust, luggage carrier, pannier mounts and fairing/engine guard will make the bike a proper adventure tourer. The fuel tank is also likely to be upgraded for higher capacity so as to ensure greater range. Expect the legendary GS asymmetrical headlamp to be present on this bike as well. The GS 310 Adventure will probably command a premium over its naked sibling owing to all those adventure-touring-friendly bits. Royal Enfield Himalayan is the only bike available in the budget adventure touring segment. The GS 310 Adventure will be aimed at those who are looking for a capable tourer at an affordable price. Speaking of moolah, the bike is likely to be priced in the region of INR 2.5 lakh, ex-showroom.
Niki | 8 years agoKapil_Kumar Yes, even I have read these reports. I am pretty sure they will launch one as the director of BMW Motorrad UK once told the media to expect other models based on the G 310 R to be launched in the years to come. If that happens, then it will be a proper rival for the Royal Enfield Himalayan don't you think?
Kapil | 8 years agoI saw some news about BMW working on the Adventure version of the upcoming BMW 310 R, anyone have update on that? I am looking to buy 300CC bike by end of year so wanted to keep the options open ;) I hope Akula makes to the showroom soon, as it took Auto Expo with its storm :D
Praveen | 8 years agoJijoMalayil Wow, the exhaust note is amazing! It sounds more aggressive than the Duke 390, for sure!
Jijo | 8 years agoCheck out the exhaust note of the upcoming BMW G310 R. And this short test ride..
Praveen | 8 years agoJijoMalayil The headlight and the front quarter fairing reminds me of Suzuki Inazuma 250. Launched at a time when performance segment was just beginning to catch up, the design and the price of the Inazuma were poles apart, and so not in a good way! It looked like a commuter but at around INR 3 lac, it was priced like a sport bike. That became Suzuki's perfect recipe for disaster, despite the motorcycle being being perfectly sound technically. Later, Suzuki slashed the price by one lac and even then it did not work in their favor. The bike was then discontinued and was forgotten into oblivion. The two bikes next to the G 310 R- they look like the pre-production versions. One looks like a commuter bike, perhaps a face-lifted Star City? The other one looks like Apache RTR 200 4V, what with the sporty design and split seats.
Jijo | 8 years agoMore pictures of the BMW G310R street fighter which is in production at TVS’ Hosur plant has been photographed recently. BMW G310R wll be powered by a 313 cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine which is rated at 34 PS and 28 Nm of torque. Transmission is a 6-speed unit.
Praveen | 8 years agoNikilSJ There is a silver lining to this decision, though. Since the motorcycle will be initially launched in a bunch of european countries, it is a good decision because the plants will be just about capable of catering to those markets alone. Adding the Indian market at the same time may prove to be too much for the Hosur plant to say the least. If the bike is launched in haste, then people may tend to get disappointed due to long delivery dates. Instead, postponing the launch makes sense because, by that time, the demand and supply will also balance out. 2017 is going to be a very interesting year because the updated Duke is also likely to be launched and we're looking forward to TVS' production version of Akula too! :)
Nikil | 8 years agoHere's some sad news for all of you who were hoping to get your hands on the new BMW G 310 R. BMW has confirmed that the BMW G 310 R will not go on sale in 2016. Instead, the launch is likely to happen sometime in January or February 2017. The BMW G 310 R was developed jointly by TVS and BMW. TVS will produce the bike at its Hosur plant for the domestic and export markets. TVS had showcased the Akula 310 at the 2016 Auto Expo derived from the G 310 R. The Akula is likely to be launched in March 2017 and is expected to priced slightly lower than the G 310 R.
Vidit | 8 years agoThe price of this BMW GS310R has been announced for the European market. In Germany, the G310R retails at 4,750 euros (around INR 3.54 lakhs), marginally cheaper than its primary rivals like the Yamaha MT-03, Kawasaki Z300 and KTM Duke 390. Although power is lower as compared to the KTM range of 300cc bikes, it is the refinement and feel that I am looking forward to. The bike has entered manufacturing in the TVS plant in Hosur.
Praveen | 8 years agoThe list of accessories have been revealed by a Malaysian- based website, paultan.org. They seem to be pretty much similar to what other premium bikes offer. The accessories list include the following: * Rear rack * Two variants of top panniers- one, a standard 29-litre unit, and the other is a 30-litre top case that comes in Granite metallic grey. * Two seats are also available where one is a soft seat which is designed for better ergonomics, and a lower seat for shorter riders. Expect the lower seat to be less comfortable than the standard seat owing to the reduced cushion. * Center-stand. * LED turn signals. * A 12-volt socket for charging electronic gadgets. Expect a premium price for these accessories. The top pannier for the KTM Duke costs around INR 13,000. So expect the pricing to be similar to the panniers offered by BMW as well. Honestly, top panniers look absolutely horrible on naked bikes. Although I don't understand the use of LED indicators. I mean, indicators are indicators, right? what difference do LEDs make apart from the power ratings?
Praveen | 8 years agoThe production of BMW G310 R has started, as these leaked images on facebook indicate: Engine unit of the 310 R: Production has commenced in TVS' Hosur plant, near Bengaluru. The pricing is expected to be very competitive, even undercutting the KTM Duke 390! This could be the cheapest offering from BMW Motorrad, thanks to BMW's partnership with TVS Motors. The bike is expected to be launched in India late this year.
Praveen | 8 years agoCorsaVeloce These pics are taken by some Honda CBR riding group, right? I wonder how they made the test guy actually stop for pictures! Does this happen often? I heard the top speed is likely to be around 170 kmph, which is plenty for our Indian roads and the mileage stands at around 25-28 kmpl. Not bad for a 300cc liquid bike, I say! Note the circular opening on the fuel tank. I think that's where BMW logo would come. Why did they have to go the Karizma way for the tail lamp? Even Mojo-like tail-lights would've been better! Looking at the first picture, it just feels like the seat is a bit cramped for a 6+ foot rider.
Vidit | 8 years agoThe GS310 R was spied again and this time, without any camo. Looks smart, but rather small as compared to the current 300cc bikes out there. If I may say so, the rear reminds of the darn ugly Karizma ZMR. Especially the brake lamp. The front on the other hand is nice, the radiator looks nice and the liquid cooling should really help in Indian conditions.
Praveen | 8 years agoStefan Schaller, the CEO of BMW Motorrad has confirmed that their operations will begin in October. So, expect the bike to be launched within this year at the least.
Nikil | 8 years agoBMW has released the first promotional video of the upcoming G310R. One of the most anticipated bikes set to be launched in the subcontinent, the BMW G310R is the product of the collaboration between BMW and TVS where the German takes car of development and the Hosur-based manufacturer looks after manufacturing. The G310R is BMW’s first foray into the sub-500cc segment to take on rivals like KTM’s Duke 390 and Mahindra’s Mojo. BMW is currently in the process of opening new showrooms across the country. Take a look at the video below: The video connects with people who love their bikes with bold statements like, “People have cars because you need a car to get places. You don’t need a bike, [and] people have bikes because they love bikes.” Spec recap:

Engine: 313cc water-cooled single cylinder
Power: 34PS @ 9500rpm
Torque: 28Nm @ 7500rpm
Wet Weight: 159kg
Top Speed: 145kmph (claimed)
TVS will also be releasing a track-oriented bike based same platform and powertrain as the G310R called the Akula 310.The BMW G310R is expected to be launched around the festive season and will be sold exclusively at BMW Motorrad dealerships.
Praveen | 8 years agoNikilSJ The BMW G310 R has a single cylinder engine only. Expect counterbalancers to do the trick when it comes to refinement levels. Apparently the top speed is around 140 kph, which is good enough for Indian roads, I guess. Fuel tank capacity is around 10 liters, which translates to a range of around 250-300 kmpl. I think this bike could be a capable tourer and the BMW badge will help in registering good sales figures unlike the Mojo which ended up being underrated and lost into oblivion.
Praveen | 8 years agoNikilSJ As Roshun said, it has the potential to give a good competition to the Duke 200 and even Mahindra Mojo. And yes, I hope they keep ABS feature as standard or at least, optional. It would be a disappointment if they forgo ABS in the name of cost-cutting. However, I feel Akula will take some time to materialize in production form. I'd say it would take at least a year for them to roll out the production version. By the time it comes, I hope Honda would also (finally) come up with the CBR 300 R so as to give stiff competition to the KTM's.
Nikil | 8 years agoHahaha. That video is hilarious. The 310R looks quick. I hope it is more refined than the KTM Duke 390. I'm guessing it will be because of its twin-cylinder layout, but can't wait to read reviews of this cracker of a bike.
Akshat | 8 years agoDoes look really quick. To be fair to the Swift though, it did have 4 people onboard. An embarrassing spectacle nonetheless :P
Roshun | 8 years ago
Their reaction when they see the bike is very funny! "Poda Poda":D
I love the reaction in the video "Poda poda" translates to "Go, GO!" in Tamil. When they first spot the bike, one of them thinks it's a Mojo. But when they pull up alongside and realize it's a BMW G310R, their excitement increases. Of course, the G310R rider is having none of this spy video business and zooms off. The frustration of the first-generation Maruti Swift not being able to keep up is evident with the co-driver yelling at the driver to catch up. That bike does look really fast. It should easily give the KTM 200 a good run for its money when it is launched.
Ankit | 8 years agoTheir reaction when they see the bike is very funny! "Poda Poda":D
Nikil | 8 years agoThe BMW G310R looks like a worthy competitor to the KTM Duke 390. However, does it come with ABS? At Rs 2.5 lakh, ABS should certainly come as standard I feel. However, the one I'm waiting for is the TVS Akula (or Apache RTR 300). That bike with the same powertrain will definitely be cheaper than the BMW for sure.
Praveen | 8 years agoThe bike is the fruit of the collaborative effort of TVS and BMW. If you ask me, it is indeed a good combination. BMW and TVS can merge their engineering prowess while TVS can make the product a reality with their state-of-art and cost effective manufacturing techniques. Here's a walk-around review by ZigWheels at the Auto Expo: What I like:

It's an affordable BMW bike and looks the part too!
Engine: 313cc liquid cooled engine produces 34 bhp and 28 Nm. The engine is mounted horizontally to ensure smooth combustion and power delivery.
Transmission: Speaking of power delivery, the engine is mated to a 6 speed transmission, which is ideal for highway runs. Even in the facebook video, you could see how effortlessly the bike overtakes the guys in the car!
Styling: The bike is essentially the younger brother of BMW's litre class S1000R street bike. Muscular tank, fat front forks painted gold, and lean, yet curvaceous rear makes the bike stand apart from the rest.
Quality: BMW's trademark German engineering and TVS's manufacturing is the ideal combination, much like Bajaj-KTM partnership. If KTM can sell like hot-cakes in India, co can BMW. The switchgear quality of the Auto Expo bike were excellent and I hope it stays the same. I swung my leg over the Auto Expo model.
What I don't like:

Comfort: The single piece seat may be good news for the pillion but not so much for the rider. The curved rear portion of the rider seat tends to push the rider towards the front and the rider ends up slamming on to the fuel tank. Not good for the family jewels, I say! I wish they come up with an option of split seats.
Verdict: The BMW G 310 R has definitely got the looks that can kill and the performance to match. The million dollar question is the price. If BMW manages to price it around INR 2.5 Lac, then it could be the next big break for both BMW Motorrad and TVS motors!
Praveen | 8 years agoBMW motorrad fans, rejoice! Your wait finally gets a respite! The BMW G 310 R has been spied in India for the first time since its unveil at the 2016 Auto Expo. The bike was seen in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. The video shows a bunch of guys in a car going ga-ga about the bike and even trying to chase it! Dressed in a beautiful shade of 'Strato Metallic Blue', the bike seems to be quite a looker! Going by the looks of it, the bike's got all the bells and whistles like inverted front forks, rear monoshock, chunky tires, front and rear disc brakes. The bike is expected to be manufactured in Hosur, The engine is expected to be a 300cc liquid cooled one churning out around 30-odd bhp and is likely to be priced within INR 3 lac. So, expect the bike to be a tourer rather than a brawler like the Duke 390. Here's the video:
