Q.Maruti Suzuki IGNIS to be launched during Diwali

A report from [I]Autocar India [/I]has revealed that the car will be launched on the 13th of January. The report also says that the IGNIS will be placed below the Swift in terms of pricing and as a replacement for the Ritz.
Nikil | 8 years agoSome more information on the IGNIS here: The IGNIS is set to come with a Harman Kardon audio system, the first for any model from Maruti Suzuki. This system will support Apple Car Play. No word yet on if this system will support Android Auto as well. One report I recently read said the IGNIS coul be priced between Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 7.3 lakh for the top-end fully loaded version.

This Ignis is still some time away from launch and even when it launches, as is common with Suzukis, there'll be a waiting list for it... so that'll mean an additional waiting period after the launch. Plus, like Jijo said, price wise, it looks like it'll fit above the Wagon R. The Wagon R will serve your purpose just fine. Plus, there's always the advantage of having a tried and trusted workhorse. Differences wise, the Ignis is likely to be better loaded with more features than the Wagon R, it will also have the bigger engine under the hood making ~15 bhp more than the Wagon R. The mileage however, will be comparable between the two cars. If you don't mind waiting for a month or two, you might want to wait for the year end discounts, if any- which will get your the Wagon R at an even better price.

If you are not inclined in getting a diesel car, then I think the Wagon-R will do just fine. The space on offer in the Wagon-R is good, the petrol motor being a 1.0-litre unit will, in turn, return you more fuel efficiency. And Ignis which is touted to replace the Ritz in India will certainly be more expensive than the Wagon-R, probably starting at around Rs 4.75 lakh (ex-showroom) in India for the base manual petrol variant. On the other hand, the Wagon-R Vxi (Auto) will only cost you Rs 4.75 (ex-showroom).

Nikil | 8 years agoThe Maruti Suzuki IGNIS, a popular automotive website reports, is likely to be launched with a premium price tag starting at Rs 5.5 lakh. The IGNIS will square off against the Mahindra KUV100. Indirect competitors in the compact SUV segment include the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300, Fiat Avventura, Fiat Urban Cross and Hyundai i20 Activ. The IGNIS, this report says, will come with a modified version of the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine from the Swift and the Baleno. The diesel version will be powered by the tried and tested 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. However, what caught my attention was that this report says that the IGNIS will come with a manual and a CVT box! Now, a couple of months back, a little birdie told us that the IGNIS would only get the AMT version. I was disheartened when I heard it. So this definitely comes as good news to me.

The Japanese-spec IGNIS gets a 1,242cc K12C DualJet engine with VVT (91PS and 118Nm) along with a DC synchonous motor (3.1PS and 50Nm). While other reports say that this engine will not make its way to India, I think this car was brought to India in this specification for R&D purposes, probably as a test bed for a launch later in the product's lifecycle. Most reports say that the IGNIS will continue to use to the K12 engine from the Swift and Baleno as only that engine qualifies for excise duties but now with these pictures, I think there is enough proof that that Maruti Suzuki may be planning to introduce this hybrid powertrain under the government's FAME scheme. As far as the gearbox is confirmed, one of our sources from Nexa had told us earlier that only the AMT version will be launched and not the CVT. However, if they launch this Hybrid version, then only the CVT can be used. I hope it is the Japanese-spec engine that finally arrives in our country and the AMT version is not that fun to drive.

This is further supported by the fact that the car in the spy images doesnt have the Projector headlights, LED daytime running lights and the front fog lamps!!! But whether the Hybrid is the normal SHVS (as found in Ciaz and Brezza) or full time Hybrid is not known at this time. Maruti can also up the ante and surprise everyone by offering a full time hybrid variant as an option in the Ignis, though prices will be very high. Nikil | 8 years agoIf you’ve been following this thread, then you might have noticed how eager I have been for the IGNIS’ launch in India. I really love the way it looks and was overjoyed when Maruti Suzuki previewed it at the 2016 Auto Expo. Yes, it wasn’t as big as I thought it would be and won’t come with the all-wheel drive system that it comes with in Europe and Japan. But I’ve gotten over it because to my eyes, it looks like nothing else on the road - quite like the feeling we all got when the Swift was first launched in India. As some of you may know, the IGNIS was launched in Europe a couple of weeks ago. Suzuki also released a press release stating the design inspiration for the IGNIS. Take a look below to find out what all design cues have been borrowed from the Suzuki’s older cars. [B]The absurd Adidas logo-like C-Pillar vents[/B] [IMG]http://indianautosblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Suzuki-Ignis-design-inspiration-C-Pillar.jpg[/IMG]The slits on the IGNIS’ C-Pillars are apparently a nod to the Giugiaro-designed Fronte Coupe - Japan’s first mini sports car sold way back in 1971. Giugiaro is one of my favourite car designers of all time. The only reason I convinced my parents to buy the Punto was because of those gorgeous lines penned by the Italian. These slits on the IGNIS seems to me like a nod to the artist that is Giuragio. [B]The headlamps placed inside the grille[/B] The IGNIS’ projector units are placed within the grille, something that was first seen in the Suzuki Cervo mini sports car from Japan from 1977. The Cervo was the Fronte Coupe’s successor and was another suzuki designed by Guigario. These days, quite a lot of SUVs seem to come with this design feature as standard. For the IGNIS, Suzuki says they looked at the first generation Vitara that was introduced in Japan in 1988 for inspiration. The current Suzuki Vitara sold abroad too has the same design identity although the Vitara Brezza sold in India does not. Though I agree that the Ignis is a weird design, but I find the KUV100 way more weird. However, over time these designs grow on us. The E2O, for example looked very weird when it was launched but over time it has slowly started to feel more balanced. The designers are always challenged to keep it mellowed down or wacky. If its too mellowed down, it may end up like the Verito or Etios, where people find it too boring. If its too wacky, it goes another way,like many couldn't accept the rear design of the Brio. Sometimes the weird ones fare well. The Ecosport is a good example for this. Earlier Maruti has launched the Zen Classic which was another weird car. Being a Maruti, the design would be the least of their bothers. As far as the badge is there they may succeed.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoI really don't understand why MS tends to make odd looking cars. [[I]Although I must admit that recent launches from Maruti Suzuki have been fairly good looking including- specifically the Vitara Brezza and the Baleno.[/I]] As it is a challenge to design SUVs in the sub-compact category, where the bulk and the height don't have a compatible length to go with. Mahindra didn't quite get it with the Quanto/ Nuvosport but did a fairly decent job with the Tuv300 / KUV100 siblings. Except from specific angles, these SUVs look quite nice and butch. the Ecosport looks more civilized but still has SUV elements and looks the part. the Ignis on the other hand, looks like a toy car with no sense of proportion. It does certainly remain to be seen, how it really looks in person, but I doubt my opinion will change much even then. I am still a little sceptical about the prospects of Ignis in India with the great VFM Baleno (upcoming Baleno RS) and the soon to be launched next-gen Swift priced (to be) priced in close proximity of each other.

Am just really curious about the price point it would be launched at, considering that the Ignis will replace the Ritz in India. Starting at Rs 4 lakh?

I hope Maruti offers a lot of customisation kits for the Ignis when launched so that customers can meake their Ignis their own with a personalised design. India will definitely not get the AllGrip system and that is a bummer. The AWD system would have made it a hoot to drive, especially on bad roads and dirt tracks that you find across the country. Still, at least this thing is coming to India and that in itself is quite a relief.
Jijo | 8 years agoSuzuki has showcased the Ignis for Europe at the ongoing Paris Auto Show, which is scheduled to be launched in January 2017. Seen are full-LED headlamps! Ignis is powered 1.2-litre DUALJET petrol engine with SHVS system. The motor is expected to make around 90 PS and 120 Nm of torque. Ignis for Europe will also get Suzuki's ALLGRIP 4WD system. Not likely to make it to India though :(
Jijo | 8 years agoThe interiors of a mid-level trim of the Suzuki Ignis was spotted while testing in India. Looks pretty much similar to the one sold in the international markets. A 2-DIN music system with physical controls and buttons are seen. We expect the top trim level Ignis is to feature a fully-touchscreen SmartPlay entertainment system. Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoExactly. Even the Kwid with smaller dimensions has the butch looks, and although it may not look like an SUV, it at least looks like a muscular hatchback. Full marks to Renault for managing to give it a micro Duster appearance. But knowing Maruti Suzuki, in all probability, all you'll get in the name of a micro SUV, will be quirky looks and a car that's neither here nor there. To their credit, however, they [I]did[/I] manage a decent job on the looks of the Brezza. Although it still has compact dimensions, it does look quite good. You're right, it'll probably be a upgrade or maybe a substitute to the Wagon R or the Ritz, However if it's positioned as a micro-SUV, it'll be priced in the Swift price range. So a comparison with the Swift is natural.

The Ignis is small as you mentioned and just seems to be a Wagon R on stilts. The ground clearance may be high, but as you mentioned it has no SUV looks like the KUV. I feel even the Kwid has better SUVish looks than the Ignis in spite of being smaller. However, this would be a good upgrade over the Wagon R or even may replace the Ritz, and in my opinion shouldn't be compared with the Swift.

Here's a screengrab of the video you posted, where it's right next to a Swift. It's just as tall as a Swift and considerably narrower than it. All this might mean a cramped 2nd row and it might be comfortable only as a 4 seater. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18182[/ATTACH] [ATTACH=CONFIG]n18183[/ATTACH] The challenge before the reigning king of Hatchbacks, Maruti-Suzuki will be to ensure that it doesn't look like a hatch back. Unfortunately from the photo that Arvind Fluidic has put up, it doesn't really look butch enough. The Ecosport and the KUV100 both managed to look like SUVs, they did have that certain muscular look. It remains to be seen if the Ignis does look the part in person.

Arvind | 8 years agoMaruti Suzuki is all set to launch a crossover vehicle(as maruti calls it) in the Indian market, the Ignis, which is a direct competition to the Mahindra KUV300. To begin with, It’s a compact crossover – it’s got tall & peppered with SUV cues here and there, most prominently the big wheel arches. Maruti has steered clear of over-the-top styling, and gone, instead with finding beauty in proportions. The nose is beautifully composed, with an integrated grille-and-headlight cluster, the roof rails and wheel arches are very SUV-like, and the rear is retro-styled, in reference to the Suzukis of yesteryears. It is also expected that it will be offered with an automatic option, though the automatic gearbox will be a CVT and not an AMT. The Ignis can be compact from the outside, but is surprisingly roomy on the inside. The seats are space-efficient, rear legroom is good which is made better by the space created under the front seat, the dash is neatly designed and features a modern tablet along with a retro air-con controller and the steering is all-new, as opposed to the Swift steering found in most Maruti cars today. Some say ;) that Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that the Ignis will be launched during this festive season via their premium dealership 'NEXA' only. Regarding the backlog of the Baleno and the Vitara Brezza orders,Maruti Suzuki has reportedly claimed that they will be able to match sales demand by early 2017 with the Gujarat plant starting operations in full swing,thus reducing the waiting periods of these models. This news just makes me want to ditch my plans of getting an IGNIS and just go for the Tata Tiago instead. I'd save a couple of rupees too which I could probably use for some performance upgrades. The only thing is I'm still not quite confident about going for a Tata product. While they say they have improved their service experience, I am still looking for some solid evidence of the same. The sad part is none of the other cars get me excited the way the IGNIS and the Tiago do. All of you out there, do you have any other suggestions for an affordable fun-to-drive hatchback that won't cost an arm and a leg in the long run?

The bookings it has for these two cars is pretty huge, and the waiting period is a minimum 4-5 months for the former and up to 9 months for the latter. Both the cars have over 100,000 bookings now. An ET report says Maruti will first fulfil all these pending orders before launching the Ignis. So no festive seaon launch for the Ignis. Expect it to be early next year now. Considering the cut throat price that the Ignis would ideall need for it to be successful, an AMT would make the most sense. Cheaper to manufacture, cheaper to run, cheaper to maintain.

Roshun | 8 years agoLooking at the bookings that the Mahindra KUV100 is chalking up, Maruti will definitely push the Ignis launch as soon as possible. Marketing it as a micro SUV will work with the Indian audience. No way will it get all-wheel drive. It will only have some of the SUV looks and the ground clearance, but it's essentially a hatchback.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoWell, I doubt they'll skimp features... but the all wheel drive isn't really for Indian SUV buyers. Most of us satisfy our offroading urges by driving in potholes and over pavements :D Most of the MicroSUV customers will view it as an upgrade to hatches.

The prototypes were sporting temporary panels although the manufacturer had preview the IGNIS during the 2016 Auto Expo. When launched, expect most of the design to remain the same. Maruti Suzuki says this facility will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 lkah units. The car maker's Gurgaon and Manesar plants on the other hand contribute 17.5 lakh units per year. The new plant is being set up with an investment of Rs 3,000 crore and will cater to both the domestic and international markets. Nikil | 8 years ago[USER="18"]MotuSid[/USER], through a reliable source of his, has found out that the IGNIS will indeed be launched in October and will come with two engine options - the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. This source confirmed that the IGNIS will be priced in the same range as the Swift. The IGNIS is set to replace the Ritz in our market. The Ritz was apparently discontinued two months ago but not many have reported it and hence not many people know about it. But back to the IGNIS, the crossover hatchback will only come with a manual option at the time of launch. Maruti Suzuki may add an automatic variant later in the year or early next year, but our source isn't sure if the IGNIS would get the CVT gearbox from the Baleno or the now regular AMT 'box from the Swift DZire. I really do hope it is the CVT that comes with the IGNIS. The IGNIS could be the last offering from Maruti for this year and I just can't wait for the manufacturer to announce the price. The IGNIS' primary rival would be the Mahindra KUV100 which has been selling like hot cakes since it was launched. I really do hope the IGNIS feels more premium than the KUV100 and that Maruti uses quality materials on the inside.
Nikil | 8 years agoWoah, that's good news. AMT would have never really gone well with the Nexa brand anyway. I am just waiting for two more details to emerge - one is what petrol engine will they offer (most likely it will be the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol :( only) and second is the pricing - I hope it will be priced the same as the Swift or maybe even lower. And like you said, the CVT may only come with the petrol option.

Nikil | 8 years agoMaruti Suzuki's upcoming IGNIS has been spotted testing again, this time by Motortrend India. It is expected to be launched around the festive season. Unlike the Japanese-spec IGNIS, the Indian version will have a chrome-accentuated grille, slight design tweaks and roof rails. The India-spec IGNIS will be powered by the 1.2-litre K12B engine with VVT and the 1.3-litre DDiS engine with SHVS mild hybrid technology. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual. A CVT is also likely to be offered in the petrol variant. The IGNIS will rival the likes of the Mahindra KUV100 and Tata’s upcoming Tiago Aktiv. Expect it to be priced between Rs 4.5 to Rs 7 lakh depending on the variant and trim levels.

I just love the interiors, i hope Maruti doesn't skimp on that! I still don't understand Suzuki's Nexa philosophy. Why would they sell the cheaper IGNIS through Nexa?

Roshun | 8 years agoHere's what I think the Ignis will finally come out at. No four wheel drive. (Sorry [USER="18"]MotuSid[/USER] , but that's just what makes business sense). If the car is going after the micro SUV segment (which is what the Mahindra KUV100 is), it will be built to a cost, and will offer features at par with what the competition offers. It will slot in alongside the Ritz (or may be the Ritz will be discontinued itself). The focus would be on lifestyle buyers who want a micro SUV, don't want to settle for a hatch. And don't want to spend more to pick a Brezza.

Even I like the fact that Suzuki has retained most of the concept's design elements. I would really consider buying the IGNIS if it is offered with all-wheel drive. But we know how the folks at Maruti work, don't we :( But more than the manufacturer, will car buyers here warm to its design. We like quirky cars, but the majority of car buyers in our country play it safe when it comes to picking up a car. They'll immediately think about resale value and all that stuff that doesn't matter while considering the IGNIS. It is high time some manufacturer gave us enthusiasts what we've been craving for a long time, that is a fun driving car with quirky looks, under the Rs 10 lakh price bracket. But as it stands, I think the IGNIS has got what it takes to beat Mahindra's KUV100.

Allow it to be quirky, make it exciting, make it crazy (please offer the AWD - just for the kicks). The 3,700mm-long IGNIS will benefit from the lower excise duty applicable for sub-4 metre cars. However, the IGNIS’s design will not be to everyone’s taste. To go with the crossover tag, Suzuki has given the IGNIS a very boxy design, it’s all straight lines and soft curves here. Suzuki has managed to retain most of the iM-4 concept's (below) design cues for the IGNIS. Even though I like the IGNIS’ whacky design, I have a feeling not many people would feel the same way and that this could lead to the IGNIS’ downfall even before it is launched.[/B] Quite sad. [U][B]Interior Design[/B][/U][/SIZE] [SIZE=14px]Step inside and you realise that Suzuki has tried hard not to ape the design theme followed by the IGNIS’ siblings like the Swift, Baleno and Ritz. Like the outside, it’s all straight lines here as well. The dashboard is flat and gets a dual-tone finish with the top part finished in black and the lower part finished in grey. The India-spec version is likely to get a beige trim though. [ATTACH=CONFIG]n9338[/ATTACH] A touchscreen display (looks like a floating unit, but look closely and you see juts out of the dashboard) at the centre of the dashboard acts as the screen for the infotainment system. The rectangular AC vents at the centre are placed on either side of the infotainment display screen while the vents on the side are circular ones like on a Swift, but here they get a carbonfibre-like surround. Maruti might ditch this screen and instead opt for the same screen you find on the Baleno, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. Vidit | 8 years agoI have a question - What does Maruti plan to achieve by introducing cars one after the other in the same/similar segment? If I am not mistaken, they already have about 12 models in the price range of 4-10 lakhs! I do think the Ignis is a good product, but launching this could result in one of two scenarios. One, soon after it's launch there could be huge demand for it and long waiting periods - this would directly result in lower sales for their other models such as the Swift or WagonR. Two, the car fails to have any differentiating factor for it's price and fails completely (as seen with the Vitara and Kizashi).
